Becoming a vegetarian? ?!
I've been thinking about becoming a vegetarian for a while now, but I'm not sure if I should!. I want to have more energy and eat healthier!.!.!. and everything I've heard about it is good!. The only problems are my mom doesn't support me in this (and she makes dinner with meat most nights), and I like eating meat!. I don't even eat that much to begin with, but I'd like to cut it out altogether!. How can I beat the cravings and convince my mom!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hi,
I've been a vegetarian for almost a year now!. 1 because of the health benefits and 2 because of the animal cruelty!.
At first just start cutting down on meat!. Sometimes have chicken with your meals etc!. i found it really easy to cut out red meat because it wasn't that appealing to me anyway!.
Start looking up vegetarian recipes that you would love to try and give them to your mum to cook for dinner or better yet say that you will cook dinner one night a week and make it a vegetarian meal!.
When your mum cooks meat ask her kindly to please not mix the meat in with the other ingredients of the dinner so you can just grab the vegetables, rice or pasta!.!.!.whatever it may be!.
If you are going to become a vegetarian though make sure you do it the right way!.
We were made to eat meat and meat provides us with many essential nutrients!. You will have to start taking iron tablets etc!. it would be wise if you talked to your doctor or read up on it just to make sure your not going to get sick without the essential nutrients that meat does provide!.
When i first became a vegetarian i got very tired and weak and it does become hard!. Though now iv been doing it for so long i cant even bring myself to touch meat!.
Best way to beat the cravings is to look up yummy recipes and try them all out a great place to look is www!.taste!.com!.au and go to recipe collections and then click on vegetarian!.
Good luck!.
Please dont hesitate to ask me anything else, i hope this has helped!.

Make some tofu "fetta" and tofu "ricotta" you can find the recipes in the Skinny B**** in the Kitch cookbook!. They are so easy and take 1-2 minutes!. Then dinner is just a matter of having a serving of fetta with whatever your mother is cooking!. I can't say I have ever craved meat, but if you eat enough protein and take an iron supplement every now and then that should help!.

Think of the animals, vegetarians save about 100 animals a year!. Meat may not mean much to the world, but it means the world to that animal!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
OK, first things first:
1!. Don't listen to the idiots on here who are going to try to persuade you not to be a vegetarian or just spam about meat being good for you or "tasty"!. That's not what you're here for!.
2!. Research and investigate in reliable, non-biased websites about common sources of protein and outstanding benefits of a vegetarian diet to get your mom on your good side!. Convince her that this is what you want because you feel it's what's best for you, and that's what she wants, right!? Show her that it is not hard to be a vegetarian and that nutrition requirements can be easily met, and that salads aren't all vegetarians eat!. Communication is the key!.
3!. If you want to be vegan, I would recommend starting out ovo-lacto for about a month and then carefully planning and working your way onto your vegan diet, researching some animal ingredients, and getting some vitamin supplements (B12, particularly)!.
4!. Craving meat!? For us, it's all about willpower and knowing why you're doing this, and using that knowledge to beat the temptation!. After you beat the temptation a couple of times, you will feel better with yourself and know that you can do it!. :D
Besides, after some time, you will stop secreting a certain enzyme in your saliva so that the next time you try meat it will taste gross and feel heavy, so luckily you'll keep that in mind!. : )
5!. There's great transition foods available, from fake meats (Morningstar Farms, Boca, etc!.) to soy cheese, if you wanna give veganism a try!. You can almost substitute anything with tofu in food and it makes a great ingredient when you're looking for complete proteins!.
As I said, do some research, communicate, and hold on tight-- you'll see the change and it'll pay off! :D Www@FoodAQ@Com

This is a decision you need to be pretty sure about!. Ask yourself some questions:
1!. Why do I want to do this!?
2!. What is meat!? Is fish meat!? Eggs!? Milk products!? What kind of vegetarian do you want to be!?
3!. Can you really see yourself living a meat free lifestyle!?
A lot of this depends on how old you are!. I'm not saying that a young person cannot be a very dedicated vegetarian, but I tried it when I was 14 and still living at home!. It's hard!. My mom was supportive, but I didn't know very much about nutrition, and money was tight at home, so it was hard for her to make separate meals for me!. The whole family was okay with cheese pizza, but on burger night, well, those veggie burgers can be a little pricey!.
And you need to read about vegetarian nutrition!. Find out how much protein you need, and think about where you're going to get it!. Try to imagine working this into your life!.
Cravings, well, I read somewhere that cravings last about two minutes, and I'd say that's true!. Every now and then, i think i'd really like a mcdonald's cheeseburger!. But I made this decision, and I've made a commitment, and i'm sticking with it!. It takes a lot of discipline!. Everyone thinks you're going to fail, and for me, that's a huge motivator!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
