If you are vegetarian for moral reasons, it is ethical to eat road-kill?!

Question: If you are vegetarian for moral reasons, it is ethical to eat road-kill!?
I don't want to get into a general debate about the rights and wrongs of eating meat, but consider this:!.

At the moment I have a large pheasant hanging up in my garage!. I was driving across some moorland when it was accidentally hit and killed by another vehicle!.

I picked it up and took it home and it will be used to make supper in a day or so!.

Now, if you don't eat meat for moral reasons - which is something I completely accept and respect - then what is your position on my Pheasant!?

Is it OK to eat something that was not slaughtered for food but was accidentally killed instead!?

What do you think!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
well as i only eat organic, free range that is perfectly fine in my books!. i mean how much of a better life can you get than being wild and free even in the last few seconds before the front bumper smacks your brains out!? better than being farmed and in a factory where stunning birds isn't a necessity like it is with cows, pigs etc

marsie read what you put again 'And dead road kill that is killed again through the process of cooking!.!.!.' it cannot die twice, it is not 'killed again in the process of cooking' it is made safe to eat and tbh your answer is a disgrace in it's stupidity!. you give vegetarians/vegans a bad name!.

raj!.!.!. + is a positive lol

not all people can live without meat (even if you take all the vitamins etc) i almost died because i didn't eat meat (took about 3 years to get to that stage) it wasn't until i was in hospital that i was forced to eat it again!.
http://www!.frot!.co!.nz/dietnet/reviews/ve!.!.!.
it's suites some people and doesn't others!. but hey, that's true in all aspects of life, right!?

oh and one final thought!. my BF's bro is a vegi and he eats perfectly fine!. he weighs more since he went vegi than when he was an omnivore!.

oh and have you heard the news story of the vegan couple aged 27-36 whos 3!.5 month old 3lb son died of starvation because they fed him on soy and apple juice, because she wasn't lactating and they didn't trust baby milk to be animal produce free!. they denied malnutrition charges even after the mother admitted to this btwWww@FoodAQ@Com

I think it's totally ethical!. The animal is already dead and there is no saving it now!. I would be more worried about the safety of eating the animal!. It could be all dirty from being run over and smashed in the road!. If you are set on eating it, make sure you cook it enough to kill any pathogens that could be in it!.

I don't know if you're a vegetarian yourself but you couldn't call yourself one if you're eating an animal!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm vegan because I don't believe it's right to take any life, or harm any living being, just to make some luxury product we don't really need, and seeing as we can live perfectly healthily without meat I count it as a luxury!.
So to answer your question, it's death was an accident, and seeing as there isn't anything we can do for it now, we may as well make use of it's body, if you had left it there it would only be eaten by wild animals anyway, so it may as well be eaten by you, so go ahead, enjoy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, I'm not a vegetarin but i can tell you that it does not go against their basic premise, which is don't kill other living creatures!. the death was a mistake therefore I'd say that taking advantage of a lucky situation is hardly breaking any moral codes in that department!. the only problem with it is what hard-core vegans will think of you for it!.!.!. but which is more importaint; weather or not you are upholding your beleifs or what other people are thinking of you and your beleifs!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think that it's ethical just because it simply happened to die, and there was nothing you could do about it!. Not eating an animal that has died is a waste of life!. My only issue is that you don't know where that pheasant's been, and you may get sick because it could have some weird bird disease!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No thanks!. My diet consists of real, wholesome food that do my body good!. And dead road kill that is killed again through the process of cooking is not something that I would place into my body!. Keep your cancer to yourself, okay!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

it depends i think, some people think its wrong to eat meat full stop!. and some think its wrong to kill for meat!. if the latter then i think its probably okay!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Meat is murder + misery + blood + pain+ torture+ carcass of pesticides!.

keep away all these negatives!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Wouldn't bother me!.

But I'm not really a vegetarian, I just try not to eat very much meat for ethical reasons!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, it is not ok!. And, it is probably filthy and dirty!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

what kind of question is this!.!.

this is so random who even cares about what the answer is!?!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Gross!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i agree about the factory part if it was me i would make it into a roast pheasent!!!!! :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

no!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends on what your moral principles are!. Some people have an ethical objection to eating meat because of the way farm animals are treated in industrial farms!. For that person, it would be perfectly acceptable to eat road kill!. Or to eat meat that has been ethically treated and slaughtered!. Others object to killing animals for food, period, no matter how it's been treated!. Come to think of it, I don't see why someone with that opinion would object either, since the animal was not intentionally slaughtered!. So I retract my first sentence!. Unless you have some theory about meat being bad for you on some sort of unscientific health grounds, there is no moral or ethical reason I can think of why you should not eat the pheasant!. In fact, there are those who would argue that it would be immoral NOT to eat it because it would be a waste of good food when so many people are going hungry in the world!. Enjoy!Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you know how the pheasant died and you were right there, I can see no problem with it!. I wouldn't eat it because I would be afraid it might have been sick!. I remember one Christmas eve some guys came into church and told us that a deer had just been hit!. Several church members left and picked up the deer!. After it was dressed they shared the venison among themselves and also with the food kitchen!. Everyone seemed pleased!.
I wouldn't take the roadkill if you hadn't actually seen it killed!.
I think it's perfectly okay to put the pheasant to good use, if you so desire!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's illegal to take road kill in most places!. They don't want people hunting with their cars and by-passing getting tags!.

Since it's already dead letting it rot would mean it died in vain!. I don't recomend eating anything that you did not see get hit!. Getting hit by a vehicle causes masive internal injuries and the animals need to be gutted and bled quickly to prevent contamination from leaking guts!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Could eat it, but would prefer to give it to my cat, just because I am not keen on pheasant, but if it was a goose, duck then yes!. I am a meat reducer, but very very very nearly veggie due to the environmental impacts and the process of killing a sentient being, On moral grounds, I eat meat if it is going to offend someone very much if I didn't after they offered it to me unexpectedly and the truth is I would more than likely enjoy it too and thank them for their hospitality!. I would not mentally beat myself up over doing so, because life is all about balance and percpective!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
