Does having a pet make you a "non-vegan"?!

Question: Does having a pet make you a "non-vegan"!?
It's not really ethical to make an animal your pet/"slave" without it's consent!. Lots of pets are very happy including my cat!.!.!. but don't you think that given the choice from birth to follow it's instincts in the wild; that it would!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
It's hard to say!. What makes having pets 'non-vegan' is that idea that while people treat their pets well (food, shelter, medicine, etc), the animals do not have freedom to move about as they please!. They may not be caged all day long, but in most cases they are confined to a house or apartment and not 'allowed' to leave!. The animals in this scenario are never permitted to mature to a self-sufficient animal, as it would in the wild!. Yes, animals may live longer, but they are kept in a completely dependent state their entire life!. This is my problem with anyone having pets - I would tend to think that this scenario is non-vegan!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

what!? " but don't you think that given the choice from birth to follow it's instincts in the wild; that it would!?"
ok!.!.!.

first of all i have fish and what instincts do they got really!? swim, eat, swim, swim, swim, mate, eat, wich is what they do in my fish tank!.!.!.!.!.
and even more for cats, all my cats do is sleep and eat, they wouldnt last a week in the streets without me, fullfilling there natural instincts or whatevers left we didnt breed out, theres a difference between a tiger and a cat, the tiger wants to be in the wild hunti ng and whatever he does, but most cats like mine are lazy, mine wont even play with there cat toys, we breed them to not be tame and thats what they areWww@FoodAQ@Com

Have you ever seen a wild cat or dog!? They are thin and scraggly looking because they have to forage for food and water and fight off predators ALL DAY EVERY DAY!.

Your pet has all the food and comfort they need!. And they don't have to fight off eagles, vultures, foxes, wolves or cars! SO they have a little less freedom to range around than their wild counterparts!. If they could talk they would say "Oh I love you I love you I love!

All life is a trade-off!. There is a reason why "It's a dog's life" is sarcasm for an EASY life!

And if you want to give your cat a little "fun" like some of the answerers suggest!? Throw a live mouse at him or her!. See what I mean about life being a trade off!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Do you know what a vegan is!? It's someone who doesn't eat meat, eggs, honey or dairy products!. I don't see how owning a pet has anything to do with your diet choices!.

Now if you're looking at it from a moral stance, then it IS ethical to have pets as long as you take care of them and are a good owner!. If you abuse your pet or don't feed it, then of course that's wrong!. But if you are giving it love and affection I don't see how that could be wrong!. Pets aren't "slaves"!.!.!.you love them and give them food and play with them!. Animals are our best friends! Www@FoodAQ@Com

It was a deal that man made with some animals that became pets!. Lets take dogs!. Wolves started hanging around man because of the occasional tid bit offered!. The benefit to man was that they gained the use of the wolves super sensitive sense of smell, hearing and eye sight to warn the camp!. It is a mutual benefit and neither one is a slave to the other!. In the case of the wolf, it is the best deal man has ever made!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Let's see--given a choice between searching all day, every day for food, fending off predators, being exposed to the elements, constantly seeking shelter, suffering from untreated injury and disease
OR
spending ones days being fed on a regular basis, given medical care, receiving love and care, and living far beyond your age expectancy!.!.!.

I think one might opt for the latter!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I adopted my cat years before I became vegan!. Even before I was vegan, I knew the best place to get a cat was a shelter, and that's where I went when I wanted a cat!. I also adopted an older cat; she was 3 when I got her!.

When I went veg, she was about 10 years old!. It would have been pretty darn cruel to get rid of her because *some* people think vegans shouldn't keep pets!. I mean, really!. For the past 14 years, I've made sure she has a good home!. She's dependent on me for food, water, shelter, and medication (at 17, she's got a few health problems but is mostly in good spirits), In return, I get someone to come home to at night, even if all she says is "meow!." I get cuddles at night and when I'm not feeling well!.

She has very little interest in going outside!. She's always been happy with just a window to look out of!. And luckily, all the places we've lived together, there've been trees outside so she can see birds and squirrels!. But she's happiest when she's curled up in my lap while I'm watching TV or on my pillow when I'm not using it!.

I don't know why I told you this, as you'll find a way to bash me for keeping a cat!. And yes, I refer to her as "my cat," but she probably considers me her person!. And by the way, cats are not "it" but "he" or "she," even if the animal has been spayed or neutered!. It's something you might want to remember the next time you're bashing us for caring for nonhuman animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Dogs and cats were domesticated waaaay long ago!.
they couldn't survive in the wild!.
But if you adopt your new pets and dont get them from pets stores thats more ethical for a vegan!.

EDIT:
the cats that you adopt or rescue have already been domesticated!.if you don't adopt them they will most likely be euthanized!.
just like you adopt a dog!.
Not a wolf!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

because they are not wild like lions or bob cats, or stray cats!. and dogs are not wolves or coyotes!.
we domesticated them and made them almost impossible to survive outside a home!.
cats perhaps can survive!.
but as for my tiny chihuahuas!.!.!. i doubt they would get far if they were left alone!.

i did not start the breeding of animals, nor do i breed animals now!. it started and there are a huge population of stray, neglected animals that are put to death every day so i am doing my part to help these animals from being hurt and left to die either by euthanasia or in a cold kennel!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends!. If you got your pet for purposes such as dog fighting or if you are an irresponsible pet owner, then I would call that "non-vegan!."

If you rescue a pet from a shelter when it would otherwise die, then I would say that was a pretty vegan thing to do!.
Www@FoodAQ@Com

actually its fine to keep a pet as long as your pampering it and it enjoys being with you!.!.!.!.you know how you do that!? you dont keep it locked up in an apartment!.!.!.!.!.!.you let it free!.!.cats know routes like bus drivers!.!.!.!.it'll come back if you've been nice to it and if it likes you!.!.!.!.if you're feeling guilty blame yourself not the cat!.!.!.!.
P!.S!. I've had heaps of animals before 11 dogs,4 cats!.13 squirrels,5 different species of birds!.NoTe: i didnt have them all at once!.!.!.!.!.now i currently have 26 guinea pigs and they run all over the house!.!.!.As long as you give them freedom!.!.!.!.you're a noble person!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i rescued my cat when he was a baby
he was abandon and he could not have survived on his own
hes not a "slave" he is part of our family ( =Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, just remember that your pet is the non-vegan!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Only by the most extreme standards!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Um if so i am far from vegan!.!.!. I am vegan but i have a cat!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

umm your not eating your pet, are you!? then that shouldnt have anything to do with itWww@FoodAQ@Com

Tim, my guinea pigs would beg to differ with you!.!.!.

They live in a HUGE home where they are served the freshest of vegetables, imported top-quality hay and the best of pellets every day!. During the day, they have the run of our living and dining rooms, and my niece insists on creating fun new "play places" to keep them entertained!. They have four human slaves living with them and a grand mom and aunt that have been well trained to always bring them an apple and know that their purpose in life is to pet and love the piggies before associating with any humans who may happen to live here as well!.

When we leave the house for more than a few hours, we open the door to be greeted by a serenade singing our praises and demanding chin-rubs!. They have all of their human slaves wrapped firmly about their little paws, and seem ANYTHING but upset or put-upon for it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
