Vegetarian for 3 months and about to cave! Some help?!?!
Hi,
Almost four months ago I watched the Meet your Meat video from Peta!. As much as I acknowledgege the fact that the PETA people are a bit crazy (see the suggestions to Ben & Jerry's to use human milk for ice cream), the fact is I was struck by the horrible way the animals died!.
I love knowing I am helping a little by not eating the poor things and since I am such an animal lover I can sleep at night knowing I didnt eat Babe for breakfast!.
The problem is that before, even though I still loved animals, I loved meat! I loved a 12 oz medium rare juicy steak, I loved meat balls and meat sauce in my pasta and chicken and ribs and God how I miss it!.
It has gotten to the point where I avoid my friend's BBQ's because it was too much for me to bear, surrounded by all the juicy meat and not being able to eat it!.
The moment of weakness usually passes but how do I keep from caving!? I feel my resolve wavering and I dont wanna watch that video ever again! As it was I cried for days just remembering (yes, I am a weirdo)!.
So!.!. Any suggestions from any vegetarians that went cold turkey!?
Help me please!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hello der, I became a vegan, and I loved meat too!. But there is so much else to eat as a vegan that is just like meat; try Gimme Lean for a ground beef alternative, Gardenburger's veggie riblets are also awesome!.
If you have a natural foods store(whole foods) in your area check it out they have so much to offer vegans!. Publix also carries many vegan products!.
More importantly, start cooking! Vegan recipes are a great way to acclimate yourself to veganism; falafel and nature burger will have you saying meat who!?
Some good cookbooks I recommend are the Veganomicon, Vegan with a Vengeance(both Isa Moskowitz) and How it All Vegan by Sarah Cramer, and Tanya Barnyard!.
Seitan is also a very good meat substitute!.
Morningstar farms,
Gardenburger
Sunshineburger
are all good for quick vegan foods!.
also in reference to the suggestion given by PETA to Ben and Jerrys Ice Cream their response is even funnier proving PETA's point entirely:
"We believe a mother's milk is best used for her child,"
-Good luck with vegetarianism!.
Oh and instead of avoiding your friends bbq's, bring tasty vegan morsels of your own to plop on the grill(there's plenty of them), have fun and enjoy life!
I heard these dudes were pretty good:

being a vegetarian should not be a crime, or cause suffering!. If you still like meat, but don't want to eat because of treatment of animals, buy local, organic, or other kinds of meat that are cruelty-free!. There are plenty of options like that out there now!. Healthier and eco grocery stores such as Fresh N Easy, Trader Joes, Fresh Market, Whole Foods have a lot of cruelty-free meat options!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
All I can say is be strong or watch the video again!. If you cave, it's not the end of the world!. Just chalk it up to being human and then go on being vegetarian!.
Oh, BTW, a sloppy joe is basically ground beef in bbq sauce on a roll!. That answer actually was pretty insensitive!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You only want to eat the way a human being evolved to eat!. Go get that Juicy medium rare steak!. Oh and have a baked potato, salad, and some mushrooms and onions on the side!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
just eat meat if you want to!. I have seen a bunch of those videos!. I eat more meat to make up for the meat that PETA was cruel to!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
I could really go for a sloppy joe right now!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
try veggie burgers, they are extremely good!.

I saw that same video and soon after I became a veggie head!. The first month was so hard but I would go back and look at the video to remind me how those poor animals suffer!. I come from a huge mexican family where we have BBQs all the time and I can't shut my family out so what I do is eat something before I attend the parties and I check out what kind of sides they have I'll eat the corn on the cob or whatever they have that doesnt have meat in it & it's works out for me so far!. I'm so sorry you are having a hard time with this change in your life but hang in there it will bypass =) Www@FoodAQ@Com
Fake ribs are really good because they are smothered in BBQ sauce and have a similar texture to meat (but are still not as heavy)!. I went to a family gathering recently and a sibling chastised me for bringing my own bean burgers!.
Anyway, you have made it this far it shouldn't be that hard to continue!. I suggest that you think about how any meal you eat was made before you eat it (even better: watch footage of how it was made)!. It should be easier to tolerate wheat or beans being harvested than slaughterhouse footage!.
The cause is an important one!. It protects more animals than any law against dogfighting will, promotes efficient farmland use, does not depend on antibiotics in livestock feed (which become less effective with each use) and your diet has much less saturated fat now!.
Hope this helps!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I understand your position!. Have been a vegetarian for a few years now but know the feelings of "withdrawal" so to speak!.
Things I did to get over the hump is to keep reminding myself why I am making this decision (the vicious cruelty to animals that I am no longer contributing to) and I also tried many of the "meat" substitutes!.!.!.
Morning star makes some really good choices and so does Boca!.
Try them all and choose your favorites!.
The soy "chicken" nuggets are very good, cooked in a toaster oven, served with BBQ sauce and whatever else you like is a good choice!.
also, the boca "burger type" crumbles (morning star makes them too) make a great sloppy joe!.
Sauteed oninns, green pepper, add the burger!. Cook a few till brown, add BBQ and ketchup!.
Good luck and thanks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Why are you vegetarian!? Personal choices like this can be hard but please keep in mind you don't have to be vegetarian to be healthy!. It seems like this theory runs ramped on this board!. Yikes! Follow your heart!. I really don't know what advice to offer!. I will mention that you can include the meat based foods you like in a healthy diet if you follow the food pyramid!.
Hope you find your thing!Www@FoodAQ@Com

i have only been doing it for a month and havent had trouble yet!. i would suggest maybe getting into cooking because a lot of times you can cook food to have the same taste as meat rather than meat!. you should read Skinny B*tch!. its in this book and it talks about the benefits of no animal products!.
i would just try to remember all the animals anytime you feel the need to eat meat!. good luck! =] let me know if you need more motivation
oh and that guy is being a jerk!.!.a sloppy joe is shaved meat in BBQ sauceWww@FoodAQ@Com

A Sloppy Joe is a sandwich on a bun!. It's made of ground beef, browned and mixed with a red tomato sauce that sometimes has onions and other spices!. It's quite yummy!. :)
Personally, I'd get majorly into cooking! Find some amazing recipes without meat!.
My sister decided to go vegetarian, but compromised to eating fish so our family didn't feel so bad about eating in front of her!. Oh man, did we eat a lot of fish!!
Find some amazing dishes to help your craving!? Try a meat-substitue!? (Tofu or the like) and experiment around to find what you like!?
Keep experimenting!.!.!.you'll find something to help kick the meat-eating completely!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
