What protein can I eat if I go vegan?!
I can't eat eggs and obvously no meat or cheese!. I know peanutbutter has protein but its high in calorie and fat so except for tofu and beans where else can I get protein thats healthy!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
All soy-based foods, not just tofu, are excellent sources of protein!. This means tempeh, edamame, and faux meats like veggie burgers, too!. Beans and other legumes (lentils, peas, peanuts, chickpeas) are good sources, as are whole grains (quinoa has been mentioned and is a complete protein, but all whole grains are protein rich!.) also, nuts and seeds, vegetables (especially dark green ones!.!.!. on a per calorie basis, brocolli has more protein than beef) and to a lesser extent, fruit!. also, try seitan for meaty taste and texture; it's made from vital wheat gluten, the protein from wheat flour with the starch rinsed away!. It's tasty and versatile and pure protein!. As for peanut butter, the thing with plant fats (except for a few tropical oils and fats that have been tampered with in the manufacturing process) is that they are heart healthy fats!. Peanut butter may be fatty, but it's not bad for you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
There are actually a lot of protein sources!. You can eat (like you said) tofu and beans and legumes, nuts, seeds, nut butters (peanut butter is really good for you in moderation, because it's high in unsaturated fats), whole grains (like quinoa, tempeh, couscous, millet, etc), soy products (any of the "mock meats", but in moderation because they are usually high in sodium!. And be careful, not all "mock meats" are vegan), soy milk, and some vegetables (try sea vegetables like spirulina and chorella!. The darker the vegetable, the better, so eat broccoli, spinach, kale, etc)!. In health class we learned about all the essential amino acids, which together form complete proteins!. As a vegan, you need to combine certain foods to get complete proteins, so try:
Beans on toast
Corn and beans
Hummus and pita bread
Nut butter on whole grain bread
Pasta with beans
Rice and beans, peas, or lentils
Split pea soup with whole grain or seeded crackers or bread
Tortillas with refried beans
Veggie burgers on bread
I think you get the idea!. Just go by combining legumes+grains, legumes+seeds, and legumes+nuts!.
Good luck :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Protein is not a problem for anyone in the US or UK unless they have an eating disorder and don't eat enough calories or hold enough of them down!.
