What am I missing out on?!
I have been a vegetarian for the past 2 1/2 months and I absolutely love it!. I get to debate with my friends, family, and help the world and my body all at the same time!. I am concerned that I am missing key nutrients though and haven't found any straight answers!. I get probably the same amount of protein as when I was eating meat and I take a multivitamin!. Is there any measures specifically I need to take in order to become a healthy vegetarian!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Wow!.!.!.!.just ignore that bitter answer!. I've been a vegetarian for 10 years and I've come across a lot of prejudice!. I don't understand the prejudice and snarky comments when the choice to become vegetarian is a personal preference!. The choice to live a vegetarian lifestyle should be made because one wants to live healthier lifestyle and lessen any impact on suffering in the world, not because it is a fad!.
So, to answer your question, a key nutrient that you do not get as a veg!. is the vitamin B12!. You should take that as a supplement!. also, if you don't eat fish you are missing out on omega oils!. I use flax meal in my smoothies and yogurt to get omegas!. A great source of complex protein that is the equivalent of eating meat is combining a grain with a legume, so eat beans and rice, or lentils and rice!. Hope this helps!. I have also become vegan (or am approaching)!. I have cut out meat, fish and poultry compltely for about 6 weeks!. I actually "feel it" when I am low in something!. SOme good sources to read or consult with is the book Vegetarianism for Dummies, Eat to Live!. I take a multivitamin and I find that if I eat beans/legumes when I feel sluggish, it normalizes me!. I do not miss flesh and feel I am doing my part!. My weakness is cheese!. I have cut out processed, but I will sneak back to Swiss when I get tired of the soy substitute!. GOod Luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com
It seems that you are doing pretty well the way you are going, just make sure to have proteins from pulses, nuts and soy, have a little bit of dairy if you eat it, and remember to keep your iron steady with green vegetables!. well go to the doctor and get your blood checked for vitamins, specifically b12, protein, iron, calcium (maybe not if you are only vegetarian and drink milk)!.

Just make sure you are getting all B vitamins (B12 is a hard one for veggies to get)!. also make sure you get enough iron!. Otherwise you should be fine!. also eat a variety of proteins to make sure you get all of your different amino acids!.
