I'm already vegetarian and thinking of becoming vegan but if I give up milk products how will I get calcium as I'm still growing and there is a history of osteoporosis in my family!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Hi there, thank you for thinking about the animals!.

Perhaps surprisingly, eating meat and dairy is one of the main contributing causes of osteoporosis!. Protein from animal sources causes calcium to be leeched out of the bones, resulting in this brittle bone disease!.

Calcium is easily obtainable in plant-based sources but without the risk of osteoporosis and all the other nasties you can get from eating meat and animal products!. Supplements are absolutely not neccesary - you can get everything you need in a balanced vegan diet, which is much healthier than an omnivorous diet, and it doesn't cause any animals to be made to suffer!

Here's some information from the Vegan Society website, and just a few calcium rich plant foods:

Vegan Sources of Calcium

Good plant sources of calcium include tofu (if prepared using calcium sulphate contains more than four times the calcium of whole cow's milk), green leafy vegetables, seeds and nuts!. The calcium in green vegetables which are not high in oxalate e!.g!. kale, is absorbed as well or better than the calcium from cow's milk!. Some soya milks e!.g!. Provamel, Plamil, Granovita are fortified with calcium!. Drinking hard water can provide 200mg of calcium daily but soft water contains almost none!. Other calcium rich foods include black molasses, edible seaweeds, watercress, parsley and dried figs!.

Examples of amounts of foods providing 100mg calcium Type of Food
Black molasses20g
Dried figs40g
Almonds42g
Soya flour44g
Parsley50g
Kale67g
Brazils Nuts59g
Wholemeal bread185g

I strongly urge you to go ahead with the change you're considering!. It will do you a world of good, as well as the animals and the environment, of course!. Best of luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Calcium comes from the ground, its a mineral!. Cows get Calcium from eating grass and plants!. We get calcium from Milk produced by the cows, since we cannot digest the plants!.

Other forms of calcium are in carrots/brocoli/sqaush!. Most veggies have calcium!. Just not enough!. For women exspecailly since estrogen actually robs the body of calcium over the years!. Most calcium supplements are products of animal remains, bones and such!.

You would be surprised at all of things you use everydays comes from animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

there are other foods that have calcium, like almonds, dates, oranges!. I find it strange (seeing the nations with the highest dairy consumption also have the highest rates of osteoporosis and the nations with the lowest dairy consumption have, guess it, the lowest osteo rates) that our governments allow false info about health and wellbeing to get out there as if it is true when it is NOT !.

So with dairy!.!.!.it is not necessary in order to avoid osteoporosis!.!.!.that is just propaganda by the dairy board!Www@FoodAQ@Com

First of all, get yourself a great daily vitamin!. Second, there are a lot of ways that you can get the calcium that you need without all the soy milk!. Although most soy milks are fortified with Calcium, so are other milks like rice, almond and hemp!. If you are eating a lot of soy products, try to cut down a little by drinking a different type of milk!. I'm not against soy at all any enjoy it at least 4 or 5 times a week, but just like everything else you ingest, take it all in "necessary" quantities!. There are also ultra rich calcium veggies like kale and broccoli!. There are so many options for calcium rich veggies that you would have to look them up online because there are too many to list!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

The idea that you need milk for calcium is a myth the dairy industry puts out there to sell their product!. In reality, using cows' milk products causes you to lose calcium because of the excess animal protein!.

Soy milk is actually fortified with calcium and it has just as much as cow's milk does!. If you don't like soy milk, you could always take calcium supplements!. You should be taking a multi-vitamin anyhow!.
