Question: Mom and Dad won't let me be a vegetarian!!?
We've seen that question in here a hundred times!. Are there any parents in this forum that have had their teen approach them with this!?

What did you do!?
How did you react!?
Did you accept or reject your teens' desire to become vegetarian!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

My teen (14 years old) is going vegetarian!. It is hard! And it is inconvenient for the rest of the family!. One of my main concerns was that she'd miss out on protein and other nutrients!. She is the vegetarian who hates veggies!

Here is how we made the transition!. I told her that for a full week, she would eat meals with the family as usual!. Each day she needed to figure out what she could substitute for meat in each meal and still be healthy!. So for breakfast we had eggs, bacon, and biscuits!. She eats eggs and drinks milk!. She said she'd replace bacon with tempeh or put peanut butter on her biscuit to get her morning protein!. There are some fast food places with NO vegetarian options (like Sonic) so unless she wants a burger without meat, she is pretty much out of luck!.

We went to the natural foods store and learned about TVP (textured vegetable protein) and how to cook it!. It is really pretty good and super cheap! She is old enough that she can make her own "tvp meat" when we have tacos or spaghetti!.

also, she has to take a multivitamin every day!. I don't know if it is a "fad" or not, but she seems happy with the decision!. It has also prompted her to try more veggies - she likes eggplant now! I think that for any teen who wants to approach this with their parents, they need to think about how they will get proper nutrition and how they can be a vegetarian without inconveniencing the rest of the family!. If we are having chicken and dressing!.!.!. it is sort of a pain to have to cook a separate meal for my kiddo!. We keep a stock of Amy's Organic frozen dinners on hand for such occasions!. also Kashi has a lot of vegetarian / vegan meals!.

Good luck!. My daughter's research on the topic, flexibility in when and where she eats, and willingness to take responsibility for researching healthy alternatives and preparing them herself had a lot to do with our allowing her to try this!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think i understand why they didnt want you to become a vegetarian!.

I have a sister who is 16 years old and she became one last year, my my parents disagreed and I wasn't sure why!. Your body takes abit to get used to not having meat i think, cuz my sister hasn't been eating meat for a few days i cant remember how long, but she ended up throwing up and her stomach was hurting for days!. i think you might want to look it up on how to start being a vegetarian safely, she had to eat abit of fish sometmes so her body can get used to it!. well good luck~

i agree what milk said about how parents feelWww@FoodAQ@Com

it took a lot of poster boards, PowerPoint's, and i'll admit it, whining for them to allow me to be one!.!.now i am ready to become vegan they they say no every time i ask!.

my parents think it is just a phase, it will be 10 years from now and to them it is just some childhood phase!.

reaction, "okay, sure!. not like your going to stick to it"

they accept it, not happy about it but they do!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
