Sweetie, ask this question in the Health section of Yahoo Answers, you will get a less biased answers there!. I'm a vegetarian in medical school and I can tell you there is no black and white answer to this!. It's fine for healthy people to say "I'm against animal experimentation until they need a surgical procedure or drug that has been developed using animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Pros

cures and treatments for the following diseases have resulted from animal testing, litterally millions of people would have died otherwise!.

diphtheria
cholera
polio
small pox (the animal in question was a 8 year old boy)
rabies
syphilus
{Diabetes, Athsma, Blue Babies} conditions not diseases!.

Cons a few white mice in some lab get killed so that many times more humans might be able to live!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Disease prevention, testing for allergic reaction, development of surgical technique, testing of products if cancer causing, study of behavior, development of anti-toxins, list really goes on and on!. A few of these there are now alternatives for, although viewed as not as effective!.
It's easy to be against it, just try to develop an arguement to a mother of why their child needs to die, and thousands of others, because it would be wrong to let a rat get a disease!.
It's really hard when you consider that probably 25% of the world population is here, due to testing of vaccines on animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It isn't just a question of being for or against animal experimentation or testing!.

I am very much against animal testing for products such as cosmetic and cleaning materials, and I am against animal experimentation for its own sake!.

But as someone who owes her life to animal-tested drugs, I am not convinced that there are more reliable ways to test drugs!. I wish there were, but I'm not convinced, and it is too simplistic to argue that animals are not physically the same as us or that some drugs that have been found safe in animals have proved unsafe for humans!. Most medical advances would not have taken place without animal testing!.

I'm vegan to minimise my personal contribution to animal suffering and exploitation as much as I can, but I value human life way, way over animal life!. Including my own - I recently read of a drug that may reduce or prevent metastasis of the cancer I had, and am now in remission from!. It was described as at 'the mouse stage'!. If it ever proves effective and I'm still around, I certainly won't be boycotting it - anyone else who wants first place in the line will have to fight me for it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

For once, I agree with Kim!. Ask this in a roomful of people, medical beneficiaries on one side and PETA fanatics on another and you are going to get different and biased views to say the least!. Ironically, PETA's boss and vp are both beneficiaries of insulin, a drug tested and previously derived exclusively from animals!. And how do you tell millions of people who have survived snake bites malaria, typhoid, H fever and other tropical diseases, heart valve transplant recipients, trauma surgery survivors cancer patients etc that they should have just died because animal testing is "morally wrong"!?

Pro would be it is integral in development of new medicines and some procedures that benefit humans and to some extent even other animals themselves!.

Animal testing is done on a progressive scale!.!.!. first at the cellular level then to bigger animals and eventually on human volunteers!. So it is quite inaccurate to simply generalize and say that animals are different from humans so testing is unnecessary!. Personally, I approve of (or at least don't object to ) testing on animals for NEW medical research only!. And I definitely object to testing for vanity products such as make up, shampoo etc etc!. There are no pros !.!.!. there is a huge difference between human and animal physiology!. It just fools the public into thinking these drugs are safe!. I can think of many animal tested medicines which has been taken off the market due to its lethal effects on humans!. I am sure everyone remembers Triludan for one!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You be the one to replace the animals then!.

Unless someone comes up with a viable alternative, we need it!.

Other than that, you take the random drug!. We don't know if it's going to burn our skin off, or make your blood heat up, or blow up your heart because we haven't tested it on anything!.

Would you take it!?

If not you, then why should anyone!?
Someone has to be the first, and i think it's very hypocritical to ask someone else to do something that you shouldn't!.

Unless you are willing to look your child in the eye and tell them that they should die rather than benefit, you can't say it's not worth it!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

i honestly cant think of any prosWww@FoodAQ@Com
