Does a vegetarian meal basically consist of 3 or 4 side dishes?!

Question: Does a vegetarian meal basically consist of 3 or 4 side dishes!?
How do you decide what dish to build the meal around!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
It can be if you do a component platter, but I usually only do that if I'm eating somewhere without a vegetarian option!.

It's very easy to make a meal with a central vegetarian dish!. Many of the "main dish" foods that I think of off the top of my head can be made vegetarian without much difficulty!. The only ones that are tricky are the ones that are simply a chunk of meat!.

For example: lasagna or spaghetti can be made vegetarian just by leaving out the meat!. Add some extra cheese (spinach and/or eggplant as well for a lasagna) and you're there!. You don't even need to use fake meat!. Curries and stir fries are usually one-dish meals, but they're easy to make vegetarian!. Skip the meat, throw in tofu or tempeh if you like it (chickpeas are nice in curry), and boom! Dinner!. Stroganoff is great when made with extra mushrooms (I happen to love it with tempeh as well)!.

If you're planning a component platter, I would suggest planning the meal around your prettiest or biggest dish!. I recently got my hand on some small artichokes!. I stuffed them!. They looked nice, so I decided to make them the "centerpiece" of the dinner!. I made some zucchini "pasta" and something else (don't remember what, maybe some sort of bruschetta) to serve with it!. I started the meal with creamy lima bean soup and that was it!.

How are you defining "side dish"!? I usually try to have 2-3 oz of protein, a cup or so of a whole grain and 2-3 cups of vegetables!. Sometimes separate, sometimes as a one dish meal!. Often a small serving of fruit as dessert after dinner!.
Examples-Veggie pasta sauce with wheat pasta, large green salad, small bunch of grapes!. 2 T hummus, whole wheat pita or crackers, large plate of crudites, small orange!.
It's only in the US that you're expected to have a "main dish" and more sophisticated Americans don't follow that custom!. At a rich person's dinner party there will be multiple courses of everything from soup to cheese!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Since the common definition of "side dish" is a dish you eat with the main and the main dish is commonly meat, then yes, it's a grouping of side dishes!.

But, main dish-side dish what's the difference what it's called!? Some people would eat more of the sides than the main sometimes too!.

To me, as a meat eater, 90% of what would be "side dishes" that I eat would be considered vegetarian!. Whereas, only 5%-10% of the main dishes would be vegetarian!. Yet, because of multiple side dishes, they add up to more food consumed than the "main dish"!.

I know what you're saying but it's hard to explain!. I mean, wouldn't the main dish just be the one you consumed the most!? It's a good question of a casual nature!.

"more sophisticated Americans don't follow that custom"---yeah ok!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Just make the largest quantity of the most mouth watering part of your meal, and there is your main dish =D

In vegan feasts/potlucks though there are so many wonderful things, there is no real main dish and everyone just takes a bit of everything, buffet style!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The only thing that makes a main dish a main dish is size!. It is possible to have a main course of baked potatoes with a side dish of steak!. Food doesn't magically become a main dish just because of an ingredient!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it's no different than planning any other meal

any dish can be made vegetarian with some substitutions, so it's just the same as non-veggie foods when it comes to making a meal
