Why do people use an "@" instead of an "a" when spelling "vegan"?!

Question: Why do people use an "@" instead of an "a" when spelling "vegan"!?
Why do some people use an "@" instead of an "a" when spelling "vegan"!?

I understand that in "veg*n", the "*" represents both "a" and "etaria", so that "veg*n" means "vegan and/or vegetarian"!. That makes perfect sense!. But from the way I've seen it used, "veg@n" means just "vegan"!. If that's the case, why not just _write_ "vegan"!. "Veg@n" looks so ridiculously pretentious!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There's only one person that I've ever seen do that, here or anywhere else, and I believe his explanation was that he liked it that way!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I agree!. I think it looks pretentious & juvenile, and I think it is just because they think it's cool, or to be different!. I don't even use veg*(a)n, because the asterisk annoys me as far as grammar!. I use veg'an, if anything!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Personally I do not like shortening the spelling of any word for any reason!. So it really does not matter why the @ or a!.
