Question for Vegetarians/Vegans about medication?!
Not looking to start huge arguments here!. This is a genuine question!.
Vegans (and vegetarians) are obviously against animal testing!. Does this extend to the medical field!? Do you/would you take medication that was tested on animals!?
I am wondering because I have been trying to research medical testing though!. All I ever run across are the same videos of animals in cages!. Maybe someone could enlighten me as to if there are alternatives for using animals in the medical field!? Because I don't feel that brand new drugs should go right to human testing!. I mean giving a human a drug you don't know ANY of the effects of is a little barbaric!.
I also want to add, that I do not use products that are tested on animals!. (shampoos, make up etc) These obviously do not need ANY animal testing as even new products can take former testing to make sure their general formula is safe, and can do controlled tests on humans without causing real danger to the "subjects" (I hate that word but I'll use it here)!.
Anyways thanks for your answers!.

I am very much against animal testing for products such as cosmetic and cleaning materials, and I am against animal experimentation for its own sake!.
As someone who owes her life to animal-tested drugs and procedures though (they don't do vegan chemotherapy), I am not convinced that there are more reliable ways to test drugs!. I wish there were, but I'm not convinced, and it is too simplistic to argue that animals are not physically the same as us or that some drugs that have been found safe in animals have proved unsafe for humans!. Most medical advances would not have taken place without animal testing!.
Sometimes we have to consider the lesser of two evils
I'm vegan to minimise my personal contribution to animal suffering and exploitation as much as I can, but I value human life way, way over animal life!. Including my own - I recently read of a drug that may reduce or prevent metastasis of the cancer I had, and am now in remission from!. It was described as at 'the mouse stage'!. If it ever proves effective and I'm still around, I certainly won't be boycotting it - anyone else who wants first place in the line will have to fight me for it!.
All medicines have been tested on animals, by law!. Anyone who says they wouldn't take them has never had a life-threatening illness or accident!. I can promise them they would change their tune if they did!.
I take a daily drug that has been tested on animals; it also contains lactose!. I'm still a vegan as defined by the man who coined the word, and that's good enough for me!.

It relay depends on what the medication was for!. if it was for something minor, like allergies or headaches, I would not take it!. But if say, my little sister was dying - and the only thing that could save her was an animal tested medication then I would get the medicine!. I am a vegetarian, and value the lives of animals - but obviously I value the life of someone i know and care for more than an animal's i have never met!.
also, i think that with advances in technology, most animal testing is not necessary!. If it can be avoided it should!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

you know all of them would, deep down inside they are all hypocrites, even the leader of peta takes insulin for gods sakes! peta, you know, the people who think that blind people using lead dogs is somehow exploiting the dog yet it's ok for her to take insulin which was derived from pigs!. go figure!.
they talk a big talk, but when the time comes, they never back it up!.

well i don't believe it is right for any case!. what makes it okay for animals to be hurt through testing!?
why is it okay for rats, dogs, and monkeys!?
Because we can't speak their language!?
I don't know which medications do test on animals!.
However if I had to choose between taking a medicine that could save m y life!.!. that's hard to say!. Depends on what it was for !.!. cancer!. and if i was young!.!. maybe!. if i was old or it was from lung cancer from smoking (which i don't do so that wouldn't happen) or something that I did and now need medicine to make me live!.!. i may not!.
Hundreds, thousands, or millions of animals died just to save one human life!? Kinda cruel but I guess it depends on the situation!.
Caging animals and making them go through painful tests and ill cruelty isn't barbaric!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is actually a sweeping generalization that all vegitarians and vegans are against animal testing for medicinal purposes!. I am a vegan, have been my entire life for religious reasons!.
I am also a scientist and do recongixe that great contributions have been made in the medical world at the expense of animals!. There isn't an alternative to animal testing!. The fact is with new medications we need to test on living creatures, animals or people!. No matter what medication you take, it has been tested on animals!. Medicine is necessity I don't believe the life to have been in vain if it gives live to many more!.
However with cosmetics it is a huge area of contention with!. Cosmetics serve vanity!. There really isn't a need for animal sacrifice for vanity!. I don't wear make up, I use natural soaps and detergents, this isn't a function of animal rights however, although I do object to the use of animals for vanity, I also object to caking chemicals on my person to "look good"!. Beauty should be and can be veyr natural!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is horrible that the medical field tortures animals!. A human can volunteer for testing!. The animals have no voice!. We are their voice!.
I don't believe people should be taking all the drugs they take!. People are irresponsible with their health!. They are too lazy to eat right and exercise!. They expect to just take some magic pill that makes it all better!. It doesn't work that way!.
Something that you might not be considering here is that vegetarians and vegans are most likely healthier than the general public!.
Myself: I've been vegetarian since birth!. I am now 33 and have never had to take daily medication!. I have gotten colds, flus, bronchitis!. Things of that sort - which can not be cured with any medicine!. I usually just increase my vitamin C, have some vegan soup, bundle up and sleep!.
If there was no alternative treatment - (I believe in herbal remedies and other treatments "doctors" would laugh at - meanwhile they work and I'm not suffering from any ailments!.) and it was life threatening, I would take the medication!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

i guess when it comes to simply buying products like shampoo, the consumer has a fairly clear choice over purchasing products against animal testing etc!.!.
as a vegan myself though, i am guilty of still taking medication which i am aware went through lab animals regardless of how against animal testing i am!.!.!.
by law, medication often has to go through these tests before they can be retailed, and as there is rarely a substitute as effective as the medication i will most likely take it!.
whereas within my diet, i have no problem as it is easy for me to avoid eating animal products due to so many alternatives!.
i'm not thrilled with myself for it, but i see the need for testing medication for obvious reasons and using animals is probably seen as the most ethical method compared to testing on humans!.!.!.
