Would beans alone provide enough complete protein?!

Question: Would beans alone provide enough complete protein!?
hypothetically, avoiding all question of other nutrients, micro and macro, would a person derive enough protein from eating only beans to survive!? i realised beans are an incomplete protein, however this just seems to mean they are slightly deficient in one of the amino acids, but not completely devoid of!. so if i were ingesting 100 grams of protein from beans a day, even if there was only enough of the limiting amino acid to create 50% of that into a complete protein, id still be getting 50 grams of protein!. does this sound right, or am i overlooking something here!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, I'm a girl and at least some think I'm pretty!.!.!.

But I do want to give you this article by McDougall addressing the common question vegans get which is "Why Don't You Drink Milk!?"

There's a lot of information about protein, the amino acids, plants and how if we eat enough of any one food to fulfill our caloric need then we also fulfill our protein needs by getting enough of any one amino acid even if it seems limited per serving in our estimation of what we find ideal (which many consider the egg)!.

To that, the Irish and Peruvians have had diets subsisting mostly of potatoes and done just fine!. Before the blight some Irish men would eat 12 to 16 pounds of potatoes a day; a number which surprised me when I first heard it but seems to be legit and when one thinks of all the manual labor people did then it makes sense!. There's a lot of history to be found in those stories!.

What we do get in the Western world is far too much protein which is not like calcium at all in that we pee off the excess which goes through our kidneys first making them work harder than they need to and leading to stones and other diseases of affluence!.

For the most part too, many people neglect to think about the other foods we might add to foods making them more complete in their protein profile such as onions to potatoes, and other spices and herbs which in themselves are nutrient packed dynamos!. Neither do complementary foods have to be eaten in the same meal!. One of our problems though is we insist on looking at single nutrients instead of the food as a whole!.

The other thing, animal protein is not the only food considered to be a whole protein!. In fact, some believe beef is incomplete being quite deficient in at least one amino acid!. But spirulina, soy, hemp, chia, quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, and several other grains, seeds and legumes are complete!.

Oh, and "Hi!"Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think you're playing with fire!. "Essential" amino acids must be taken in from food sources because your body doesn't make these acids on its own!. Amino acids are vital to various cell functions and you risk health and life by not giving them to your body!.

Read this article http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Protein_com!.!.!. for more information, and follow some of the links at the bottom of the article for additional information!. The key notion in all of the respectable science is that a variety of food sources are needed to provide adequate nutrition!. This is true whether you're vegan, vegetarian or omnivorous, and it's true for needs beyond protein!. Man does not live by beans alone!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The Soy bean does contain a mixture of amino acids that approximately matches our needs!. Next closest to that is millet!.

Rice and oats likewise come close!. But you really should include some tomato, cabbage or brocolli, potato, flax seed, wheat-grass, not because you need protein but because you need other constructs that your body will not make!.

You would be extremely deficient in viatmin B12 with only beans, for example!. But no matter what vegetable sources you eat you are very likely to be deficient in B12!. This may be your single most difficult challenge!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

hello sexy
i'm a boy though, and too hairy to be pretty!.

i don't really get your question, and don't knwo too much about amino acids
but as far as i understood your expecting to get 50gms protein per 100gms of beans consumed!?
sorry not going to happen!.
beans are great but 50gms protein/100!? i would say more like 16-24 depending on the bean!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

that sounds okay to me!.!. granted it is not a complete protein, but you don't need complete proteins to have this nutritionally sound!.!. beans have fiber, the right carbs and other nutrients that I would think make up for the lack of complete protein!.!.!.

Www@FoodAQ@Com

The only thing that contains 'complete' proteins is meat!. Lentils come in second!.!.!.close but no cigar!. Lentils do not provide 'complete' proteins but close to it!. (missing a dna link or two!.)Www@FoodAQ@Com
