Answers:
Why be Vegetarian!?

There are so many good reasons for being veg{etari}an (health, animals, the environment) that a better question might be, "Why NOT be vegetarian!?"

When you can easily!.!.!.

significantly improve your health,

dramatically reduce your environmental footprint,

and greatly lessen the suffering of animals

!.!.!.lets ask instead, "What's stopping you!?" :)

Of course, the decision about whether to become a “veg” is a matter of personal choice!.!.
But; if more people really knew how bad meat is (for them, the planet, and the animals), more people would make the choice to go meatless

Improve your health

The medical evidence is clear, consistent and overwhelming!.!.
Vegetarians and vegans:

!.!.!.are far less likely to get cancer, heart disease, diabetes, or osteoporosis

!.!.!.are far less likely to be overweight

!.!.!.have lots more stamina

!.!.!.consume far less pesticides in their food

!.!.!.have superior immune function

The largest epidemiological study ever conducted (the China-Oxford-Cornell study) found that those eating the amount of animal foods typical for Americans have seventeen times the death rate from heart disease, and, for women, five times the rate of breast cancer, than those who get 5% or less of their protein from animal foods

Meat contains 14 times the amount of pesticides as plant foods, since pesticides get concentrated as they move up through the food chain, and since they're more easily stored in fatty tissues!.!. In 1980, six years after the pesticide dieldrin was banned, the USDA destroyed two million packages of frozen turkey products contaminated with dieldrin!.!. (And such contamination can routinely occur without detection!.) In 1974, the FDA found dieldrin in 85% of all dairy products and 99!.5% of the American people!.!. The EPA discovered that the breast milk of vegetarian women contained far lower levels of pesticides than that of average Americans!.!. A study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine found that "The highest levels of contamination in the breast milk of the vegetarians was lower than the lowest level of contamination…(in) non-vegetarian women… The mean vegetarian levels were only 1-2% as high as the average levels in the U!.S!.!."

Prevent cruelty to animals

Nobody wants animals to suffer, but it's easy to forget that when we eat them, that's what we're supporting!.!. The easiest action a person can take to reduce animal suffering is to simply stop eating them!.!.

Around eight billion animals are killed for food every year in the U!.S!.!. alone -- a number greater than the entire human population of the planet!.!. Each meat-eating American eats the equivalent of about 24 animals per year!.!. What's worse, modern agricultural methods mean that animals are raised in cramped confinement operations instead of the pastures from childhood picture books -- a practice known as factory farming!.!.!.

For some, vegetarianism and veganism are easy ways to refuse to participate in this cruelty!

Save the Earth

Eating vegetarian saves more land, energy, and water than any other choice you can make!.!. That's because livestock eat several times more grain than they produce as meat!.!. So raising livestock uses:

several times as much land to grow the grain to feed them

several times as much energy to harvest the grain and transport it

several times as much water to grow the grain and to water the animals

several times as much pesticides, etc!.!.

Worldwide petroleum reserves would be exhausted in 11 years if the rest of the world ate like the U!.S!.!. The least energy-efficient plant food is 10 times as efficient as the most efficient meat food!.!. A nationwide switch to a pure vegetarian diet would allow us to cut our oil imports by 60%

Over half of the water used in the U!.S!. is used to grow feed for livestock!.!.!. It takes 100 times as much water to produce meat than to produce wheat!.!. The water required to produce a day's diet for a typical American is 4,000 gallons!. (It's 1,200 for vegetarians and 300 for vegans!.!.) Compared to a vegan diet, three days of a typical American diet requires as much water as you use for showering all year (assuming you shower every day)!.!.

U!.S!.!. Livestock produce 250,000 pounds of waste per second -- 20 times as much as humans!.!. A large feedlot produces as much waste as a large city, but without a sewage system!.!. Animal waste washed into rivers and lakes causes increased nitrates, phosphates, ammonia, and bacteria, and decreases the oxygen content!.!. This kills plant and animal life!.!. The meat industry account for three times as much harmful organic waste as the rest of the industries in the U!.S!.!. combined!.!.

It takes ten times as much land to produce food for an average American compared to a pure vegetarian!.!.!. An acre of land can produce 20,000 pounds of potatoes, but only 165 pounds of beef!. In the U!.S!., 260 million acres of forest have been destroyed for use as agricultural land to support our meat diet (over 1 acre per person) Since 1967, the rate of deforestation has been one acre every five seconds!.!. For every acre cleared for urban development, seven acres are cleared to graze animals or grow feed for them!.!.

Around 85% of topsoil loss is directly associated with raising livestock!.!. The USDA says crop productivity is down 70% as a result of topsoil loss!.!. It takes nature 500 years to build an inch of topsoil!.!.Vegan diets make less than 5% of the demands on the soil as meat-based diets!.!.

Make this a weapon (the fork) of non-violence
For the earth
For the animals
And your health
Go Vegetarian
--------------------------------------!.!.!.
They probably would suffer losses!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Nope!. Veg*anism reduces the likelihood of getting ill, but it doesn't prevent it!. And there would still be car accidents, violent crime, pregnancies, other operations that would necessitate medical intervention!. If a vegan has a stressful life, that may lead to illness, such as GERD!. If a veg*an has a poor diet, that can also cause health issues!.

Now, the pharmaceutical industry, making all these cholesterol drugs and ED drugs, they might have a hard time of it, but hospitals and doctors wouldn't!.

So, no, it doesn't make sense!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No it doesn't make sense at all!.

Do you suppose that vegetarians never get ill!?

A number of people have mentioned cancer, as if not eating meat were a proven preventative!. It is not, nor is eating a healthy diet!. Nobody knows what causes most cancers, and vegetarians and vegans develop it at the same rate as meat-eaters!.

I developed cancer despite a largely organic vegan diet; through support networks I have met three other vegans with cancer - one a lifelong vegan - and dozens of vegetarians with cancer!.

There is no food that has been proven to cause cancer (or to prevent or cure it either); meat doesn't cause cancer, nor does veganism or vegetarianism protect against cancer!. There are some studies which link certain diets and cancer or lack of cancer, but studies are not proof, and other studies have different findings!. The cancer/ meat links that are actually known or suspected are these:

A diet high in meat, particularly red and processed meats, is known to contribute to the development of some colorectal cancers!.

A diet high in meat and fat may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer!.

A diet high in red and processed meats is thought to possibly increase the risk of stomach cancer!.

A diet high in dairy is thought to be a possible risk factor in prostate cancer!.

All these are risk factors, some of them not even conclusively known risk factors!. A risk factor is not a cause - insurance companies regard being male as a risk factor for having a car crash, but being male does not cause car crashes!.

That really is about it for any known connection between meat and the 200+ diseases that come under the umbrella title of cancer!.

It's actually thought that fish could reduce the risk of colon cancer, although, like all the cancer/diet connections it's not been conclusively shown!. But the evidence is strong enough for Cancer Research UK to include it in their information on cancer and diet

Many other diseases and conditions are not diet related!.

If everyone had a healthy diet, whether they were vegetarian, vegan or meat-eaters, yes people would be healthier and doctors would have to deal with fewer people with trivial complaints and people who just generally felt unwell!. But random diseases like cancer would continue at pretty much the same rate!.

People making unproven, exaggerated and unsubstantiated claims for veg*nism is one of the worst things about this V&V forum!.

We don't all live in countries where hospitals are money making concerns by the way!. In the UK we don't pay for our health care; doctors would be relieved to see a drop in their workload - it wouldn't mean any less money for them, and if their workload doubled it wouldn't mean any more money

No, that does not make a lot of sense!. That is actually a very stupid statement!. What, do you think that if everyone became a vegetarian that people would stop breaking bones!? people would stop having babies!? people would stop getting in car accidents!? people wouldn't be shot!? people wouldn't get cut or step on nails!? people wouldn't attempt suicide!?

There are MANY reasons a person would have to go to the hospital besides things that can be controlled by a vegetarian diet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

well people's health would improve, and I guess there would be no point in having breast cancer runs because, there would be only rare cases of cancer(especially if we went vegan)but what about breaking legs, tearing muscles, or getting shot!? And it still is wise to get a checkup once a year!. Everyone likes to hear the doctor say "your as healthy as a horse" once a year!. seriously, I love it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, because vegetarianism does not cure, solve, and in most cases even prevent diseases!. It might ward off heart disease and a balanced vegetarian diet is a good preventative measure for a few cancers, but as a whole most problems humans face will continue!.

People will always go to the hospital to give birth!. Vegetarianism won't fix preterm labor, children born with heart defects!.

Vegetarianism will do squat for people that need dialysis because of kidney failure!.

People will still be alcoholics and wreck their livers since alcohol is often vegan!.

Drug abuse, eating disorders and all mental illness in general can't be alleviated by a vegetarian diet!.

Cancer will continue to affect us and our loved ones!. Most cancers have little to nothing to do with diet at all, since oftentimes cancer can be contributed to any number of contributing factors, from viruses that alter oncogenes to radiation exposure or toxins in the environment, to mutations in cells that the body fails to weed out in time!.

People would still struggle with their weights and can still have heart disease, though it would certainly be a marked improvement from the current diet most people eat!. Diabetes would probably be hit or miss, the most you can to do control it are lifestyle choices like activity, weight loss and wise food choices!. However, vegetarians can still eat unhealthy diets, potato chips and snack cakes are vegetarian, and even vegan, but would make you fat and sick within months if you can't lay off of them!.

Let's not be naive enough to think that vegetarianism will be the cure-all for all our problems!. The best arguments for vegetarianism lay along the ethical, moral and humanitarian line, since the meat industry plays an enormous role in the development of unethical trade practices, world hunger and global warming!. And above all, factory farming is deplorable in all counts!.

Health-wise, there are some benefits to a vegetarian diet but it is NOT the silver bullet, it is not a miracle, and in a way we do a disservice to those considering vegetarianism by making outlandish claims and overexaggerating the health benefits!.

Beating on the "health" drum might attract a few, but overall we are NOT a health conscious species!. We all know smoking and drinking are awful for us, but a great many of us do it anyway!. We all know we should be active, but I'd be darned if I'll be out jogging instead of having a few drinks with friends and watching Project Runway!. We all know we should watch our weights and be slender, and I'm lucky enough to be slim but overall people would just rather have their chocolate cake, cottage cheese thighs be darned!. So realize that there's little reason to obsess over the health benefits angle, since barely anyone cares, and it's mostly exaggerated stuff anyway!.

Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, if everyone goes on a well planned out vegan diet and get a vitamin instead of shots!. The need for quite as many doctors will go down, not by much!. What about birth defects!?Smoking!?car crashes!?Plain crashes!? There are many other reasons people see the doctor than just meat found illnesses, even though that is part of it for a lot of people!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

umm, no!.

what would happen is the cost of b12 shots, and iron and protein supplements would skyrocket!.

anyways, since when are vegetarians immortal!?

stop acting like vegetarianism is some sort of cure for everything wrong in the world, you are dellusional!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

sure, because as we all know that elimination of meat out of the diet prevents you from breaking bones, injuring yourself, getting cancer, getting sick, having babies, having genetic diseases, and so on and so forthWww@FoodAQ@Com

That wouldn't stop people from shooting others, nor would it stop people from smoking (and the health risks related to that)!. Short answer: the hospitals would NOT go bankruptWww@FoodAQ@Com

No, silly! There would be still, all the car accidents, drug overdoses and murders or attempted murders! They would be more pronounced is all!.
Www@FoodAQ@Com

Most health conditions are not diet related, so doctors and hospitals will stay in business!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I didn't realize vegans/vegetarians were immortal!.

I guess you guys survive on your outrageous self-righteousness!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It makes a lot of sense provided we take a good vegetarian balanced diet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

They wouldn't go bankrupt, you would still have the emergency section!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

This question makes absolutely no sense whatsoever!!!!!!!!! Www@FoodAQ@Com

Not completely, there would still be all sorts of health crises, but your right: they would be allot poorer!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

This makes NO sense!. They'd actually do better!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Psychiatrists would make a mint over the trauma of going without real food!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

vegetarians and vegans is just like normal humans!.vege non-vege we all need to die somedays!.we just choose what we think it's right!.it's our choice!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

This question does not make sense at all!. Please just delete it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Um no!.I am vegetarian and I go to the doctor just as much as my meat eating family lol!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

nah, but people wud be a lot healthier ? im a vegetarian for health reasons! an 25 pounds dunt lie n_n Www@FoodAQ@Com

no, as people still need more red meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

ummm!.!.!.no! vegan maybe!.!.!.
haha, imruining it for the docs! lolWww@FoodAQ@Com

I disagree because you'd still have people eating imitation cowburgers, you'd still have people eating the pus that is excreted from cow's udders, and so on!. Most ailments, as we know, are caused by meat, dairy, processed foods and medication!. Doctors, however, will go bankrupt once everyone adopts a healthy, wholesome plant-based diet that focuses on raw organic vegetables, green leaves, seaweed, nuts, seeds, sprouted grains and legumes, and fresh and canned fruit!. Live an animal and chemical-free life and you'll add years to your life!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
