Answers:
I am a vegetarian from birth-can't stand even the smell of most meats!.
Doctors would inform my parents I would die!.

My blood checks good and I am very healthy!.

Just makes sure he gets vitamin B12 in his diet!.

They do make a protein powder made from whey!. Add that to soy milk and you have protein--very simple and easy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well done to your son for making the decision, I was five when I decided to go veggie too, I'm now 17 vegan and perfectly healthy!.
It's possible to get all the nutrients your body needs from a veggie diet, in fact it is quite easy, and as the first answerer said excess protein is more of a problem that not getting enough!. As long as your son is willing to try lots of different foods then there shouldn't be a problem (at least he'll eat soy beans)
You can buy lots of mock meats, and meat substitutes (such as quorn) from your local supermarket, these are great as they are relatively quick and easy, and can be used instead of meat in most recipes, although its not a good idea to live off them they are a good source of protein and other nutrients your son will need!.

hope this helps, and good luck to you and your son :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Consumption of too much protein is a much bigger issue than not getting enough!. Protein deficiency is common only in countries suffering from famine!. Eating too much protein, however, can lead to cancers of the colon and liver!. Children can get all the protein that their bodies need from whole grains in the form of oats, brown rice, and pasta; from nuts and seeds, including sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, and spreads such as tahini; and legumes, including tofu, lentils, beans, and peanut butter!.

The American Dietetic Association states, “Well-planned vegan … diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence!.”Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, as a parent, especially of a child so young, you have to decide what's best for him!. This is more a parenting issue though as all parents should be concerned about their child's nutrition!.

Soy beans or soy products are fine as a protein source!. You can also add nuts, rice/cereals, beans, milk and eggs to his diet!. Protein is actually easy to obtain!. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich for example is a perennial child favorite and a good source of protein!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

he is only 5 year old!.
it totally make sense that he refuse to eat animal product!.
there are so many song, toy, we give kids for FUN or PLAY with!.
not for eating!.

if you have favorite stuffed pig which you absolutely adore!.
then your mom telling you bacon is coming from pigs belly!.

that's actually quite shocking!.

as long as he is eating real food!.and getting regular health check
and he is fine!. I don't think there is any problem at all!.

if you wants to introduce him more animal product,
do it one in the while!.
if he refuse to eat it, try another time!.

there are tons of vegetarian people in the world & to become
one of them,is completely personal choice!.

he just being 5 years old who doesn't feel comfortable to eat food
coming from animal!.
that's just fine!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is very rare for someone in a developed nation to be protein deficient!. Protein is in everything, and if he is eating a well balanced diet than it should not be a problem!. A bowl of oatmeal and a glass of milk in the morning would give him 5-10 grams of protein!. Most people eat far too much protein, sometimes double what they should be!.

You need to educate yourself on vegetarian nutrition for children!. Read as many books on the subject, use the internet, etc!.

I was 7 when I decided to give up meat, but my parents wouldn't let me!. I did give up fish from that age though!. I think it's great that you are accepting the fact that your son wants to do this!. I would help in every way but also remember he is young and may change his mind very quickly when he realises he can't have his McDonald's happy meal!. It might be for good though so get yourself familiar with quorn products!. They are great!!! easy to cook and you can add them in the same way you add meat to alot of recipes!. It tastes lovely too!.
Good luck to you and your son!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Some parents raise their kids to be vegetarian from the day they are born, so I'm sure he'll be fine!. I went veggie around seven!. Most of the food in the vegetarian section has a good amount of protein, and all of those servings of different foods add up!. Sometimes I wonder if I get too much protein!. Maybe let him try chocolate soy milk for a treat!. A lot of brands have vitamins added!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Wow, I think that's great that your five year old made that choice!. Don't worry, he can get plenty of protein from other sources!. Search online for vegetarian kid meals, and feed him beans and nuts, and such!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

soy beans are a greattt source of protein!.
also broccoli and peanuts!.
and carrots!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

he can get protien from beans , lentils, mushrooms too Www@FoodAQ@Com

A five year old doesn't know what is good for them!. You have to be the parent and make sure you are putting healthy things on your child's plate!. Speaking to a nutritionist and your doctor would be a good help!.

Despite what the recruiters of vegetarianism say, it is possible to include meat in your diet and be healthy!. The food pyramid was invented for a reason!. Heart disease in America is NOT caused by the consumption of protein rich foods!. What heart disease IS caused by are bad diets which lack portion control!. Bags of potato chips, cakes and pies, and fried foods are what is giving Americans heart disease!.

Food for thought: Will it be easier to get your child to eat a hot dog OR to take vitamin supplements!? -- Maybe this is a stage that will pass!.

I also really think its scary how the adult vegetarians on this site are 'applauding' your 5 year old for 'choosing' vegetarianism!. LOL This is just laughable!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

for his future's sake, you need to explain to him that some animals were put on earth to be consumed, offer him alternatives if you like but allow him to understand that there is nothing wrong with eating meat and if that a chicken or or fish was big enough that would not give it a second thought to shove you in their mouths and eat you!.

also, DO NOT show him any of those peta videos or meet your meat, those are just propaganda videos which unfortunately are extremely effective at scaring young people into vegetarianism, educated your son without bias and he will thank you when he gets older!.

I wonder where the myth of "not enough protein" originated!? Take a look at the foods you eat!. Read labels!. Virtually EVERYTHING has some protein in it, from potatoes to bread!. Peanut butter is a wonderful source of protein that most children enjoy!. Most nuts are good sources of protein!. Soybeans are another excellent source!. Beans, peas and lentils are all great sources of protein!. Even broccoli!. Do you give him pizza, or macaroni and cheese!? Cheese has all the same protein you find in meat!. So does milk, but milk and cheese are not great choices because of the cholesterol and fat!.

The main concern is getting COMPLETE protein, meaning all of the necessary 17 amino acids, which is easily accomplished by combining different types of vegetables, beans, legumes, etc!.

BTW - the number one cause of premature death in America is heart disease caused by!.!.!. you guessed!.!.!. too much cholesterol and fat found in "protein rich" meat based diets!.

Your son will be fine as long as you make sure he eats a good, balanced vegetarian diet!. B-12 and Omega 3 fatty acids are the two things you have to be sure to cover, since B-12 is ONLY found naturally in meat, and Omega 3's aren't found in too many vegetables (walnuts and flaxseed are two!.) Make sure you give him a (low iron) multi-vitamin!. If you're concerned, see a nutritionist (NOT A DOCTOR, most receive less than 6 hours of nutritional training in school!.)

EDIT:
I invite any of the ignoramuses who thumbs downed my answer to email me and explain to me what you find disagreeable!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
