How long before you'd know you're doing it wrong?!

Question: How long before you'd know you're doing it wrong!?
I've been a lacto-orvo vegetarian for close to a year now, but I'm still worried that I might not be doing everything quite right!. I don't really eat any soy at all because of the whole scare about it being bad for you, especially the fake meats or whatever, but I try to get protein from other beans and cheese and milk, etc!. I just don't think I get all that much overall, I might be getting plenty, but that's the thing, I just don't know!.

So if people are going to get sick from not getting the right nutrients, does it usually show up within the first few weeks/months of a diet change, and I'm pretty much in the clear now that it's been so long!? I'm probably worrying over nothing, but that's me for you! I feel just fine and a lot healthier since swapping my diet!.

Oh and one last randomish question, can someone recommend a really good brand of vegetarian vitamin that has everything recommended for vegetarians in it please!? I'm never quite sure which brands to buy!.

Thanks!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think if you are feeling good now, you probably are heading in the right direction!. I started slacking on my nutrition (ate a bunch of junk and sometimes didn't eat enough), and I really felt it!. You'll know because you will feel a lack of energy, I was pail and finally I got a regular cold and I got totally knocked out (For a month)!. As long as you take good care of yourself, eat plenty of foods with protein and iron (like you are doing), you should be fine!. Don't worry so much!. I just took a regular sentrum multi vitamin and it was just fine!. I actually think that I saw specific vitamins for vegetarians and vegans in stores, so check those out if your interested!. Incorporate as many raw veggies and fruits as possible into your diet!. Chances are you are cooking all the nutrients out!. You can get protein from nuts instead of soy!. But soak them first!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I believe your body tells you when you're doing right and when you're doing wrong!. Listen to what your body says and adjust where you need to!.

But if you're afraid of soy, you should really be afraid of cows' milk, which have far more powerful hormones than soy's phytoestrogens!. Just eat organic soy and try to avoid soy protein isolate and other more processed foods!. But tofu and tempeh are just fine!. The folks who say soy is bad for you are from anti-veg, pro-meat and -dairy groups!.

As for vegetarian vitamins, there's a company called Deva that makes vegan multivitamins, and VegLife also makes vegan vitamins!. I know of a few online retailers that sell them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you are worried you can get blood tests which show up what you are lacking!. With your diet, you would be getting enough protein!. Most people eat too much!.

Do you eat green leafy vegetables!? You could be low in iron if you don't!. As you have dairy, you are probably not low in B12, but you could be!. The same goes for omega 3!. It could take a while for these things to show up!.

If you're feeling healthier, you're probably getting everything you need!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I get this thing about lacto-ovo vegetarian!. Which, according to the vegetarian society, I am!. But personally, I think I am a full vegetarian, because isn't not eating eggs/milk what vegans are for!?
Anyway, you don't need to worry about missing anything, anybody, no matter their "excuse", can become a vegetarian!. Some omnivores will say its not as good, and act like your health is going to drastically downfall, but it really is not!. On the whole, its supposed to be good for you!.
I don't think these "fake meat" products are actually bad for you, because if they were, wouldn't it be a bit more well known!? But I don't really know too much about it!.

Anyway, don't worry!. As long as you feel healthy, you should be ok! =)Www@FoodAQ@Com
