There is actually a few completely vegan farms out there using mulch and vegetable compost to grow their veggies and they are doing very, very well!.

However, I have no issue with farms using organic composted manure (only organic standards require it be composted so it's okay to apply raw to non-organic commercial crops) and think that's better than the petro-chemical fertilzers that are used for most "conventional" (what organic was 100 years ago before chemicals) crops!. It's more natural and doesn't kill the soil which is alive and how plants access their nutrients via symbiotic relationships!. And it beats the fishmeal and bloodmeal products:

And it's certainly better than the monstrous manure lagoons that collect waste and marinate with the mass of chemicals which can be breached by poor linings, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornados and poor upkeep which then pollutes waterways and kills off wildlife including fish in creeks and streams flowing downstream into the oceans to mix with the other petro-chemicals to create dead zones:

Taxpayers fund those manure lagoons at the price of $400,000 each via the Farm Bill in a program called EQIP:

Part of the problem with mono-crops is that birds no longer have the habitat they had and with all the insects (their food supply) killed in the fields with pesticides (which also kill birds) they no longer fertilize the fields and forests with their guano!. We are killing our world off with the idea that we can do it better than nature and the circle of life because we just don't think of all the implications of what we do when we divert things!. In the end we end up with less not more!.

In my own garden, I use compost!. All those veggie scraps have to go somewhere, and it's better that they go directly back to the Earth than to rot in some landfill!. :)
When buying food, I try to buy organic as much as possible, but it isn't always feasible economically!. Most organic farms use manure, and technically, it is supporting the meat/dairy industry, but personally, I'd rather not have food that is infested with awful chemicals, so it's a choice you really have to make for yourself!. The notion of human rights also comes into play!. Organic farmers tend to be less successful!. I'd rather support the small, local organic farmers around me than to buy produce in a grocery store from Mexico or California (hundreds of miles from me), or really, who knows where if you're buying frozen!. Not only does it taste much better fresh, but you're also supporting your local economy, which is always good!. :)
Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to be 100% vegan in the west, and this is just one of the compromises you have to deal with!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Apparently some aren't aware of the situation!. Where the farmers get the manure from is the key!. They purchase the manure from meat and dairy farmers!. When people refer to "supporting the meat and dairy industries" this is just one of many examples!. Selling the manure puts $$$ in those industry's pockets the same way the animal rendering industries do!. If you absolve the farmers who purchase manure to use on their crops of supporting those industries, you must absolve the rendering industries as well!. Neither manure nor rendering results in the death of an animal, yet both support the meat and dairy industries!.
Many vegans use compost which is the very best option all the way around!. I don't think vegans themselves use manure as fertilizer but they do consume produce in which manure was used!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A hardcore vegan shouldn't use manure as a fertilizer since it is an animal byproduct and the meat industry is making money off of it, It is impossable to know what is used on the fruit and veggies you buy, but a vegan who has a home garden should use plant, or mushroom based mulch!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I really don't see anything wrong with manure as fertilizer!. i mean the cow wasn't like forced to defecate so I don't think it should matter too much!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Some might but there is mulch and vegetable compost, also some use mushroom manure!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I think they would!. Defecating hardly ever is life threatening to an animal!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Vegans use manure in many ways!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
that is how all organic vegetables are made!.
i dont think people raise cows just to make them poop so I think it's okay!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm on my way to get a burger, you want one!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
i was under the impression that a vegan consumes anything voluntarily given by an animal (or human)Www@FoodAQ@Com
Seems rather hypocritical if they do, but hey! what else is new!? lawlerskatesWww@FoodAQ@Com
