Is cane sugar really more acceptable to vegans than honey?!
I'm not trying to stir, I'm actually asking!. I take it that farming honey isn't an acceptable vegan food because it involves animal products, and can be considered to be exploiting bees!. But I was wondering about all the insects that die when a cane field is burned!. Doesn't that make cane sugar as unacceptable as honey!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
It's fair to say that any degree of farming involves some degree of animal or insect death!. And it's certainly true that some cane sugar farming, as the previous respondent explained, can be environmentally destructive!. Vegans should certainly make an attempt to buy packed sugar that's been grown in an environmentally healthy way!.
Similarly, some honey might be raised in an ethically and environmentally sound way, but a lot of honey is not!. It's easier though to avoid honey that might have been produced cruelly, when there are ready alternatives available to honey!. It's not so straightforward with sugar, as this is something that is present in many, many foods!.
No way of living is entirely cruelty free, but with vegan living, the idea is to make your life as cruelty free as is possible!. Go with own conscience on this, and try and aim for the least cruel option you see!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

sugar cane is grown in the beautiful everglades!.
it is destroying the everglades, and many animals are loosing their homes and becoming extinct/endangered (ie, florida panther, snail kite, manatee)!.
i used to live in florida, and the florida everglades are magnificent!. there are also less than 50 florida panthers left in the wild!.
big sugar grows their crops by draining the everglades, and adding excess amounts of chemicals, like phosphorus!. the everglades live on a "low-phosphorus diet" and the extra amounts bring in things like algal blooms and red tides (which kills more animals and plants)!.
i most definitely boycott florida cane sugar!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Some vegans eat honey, but they are particular about where it comes from!. They make sure it is a kind beekeeper that does everything to make sure the bees are not harmed in any way!.
I try to avoid honey myself!. And sugar, for that matter!.
Instead of honey I use agave nectar!. Instead of sugar I use stevia!. Both come from plants, and work much better (in my opinion)!. They are even good for diabetics since they don't affect your blood sugar!.

Animals being killed by accidents are different than animals being exploited!. The insects in the cane fields aren't being exploited by humans!. Honey bees are!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
