Vegetarians Does This Make Sense To You?!

Question: Vegetarians Does This Make Sense To You!?
I am vegan but my 3!.6 year old is vegetarian I give her cheese and ice cream but no meat, poultry, fish, or eggs!.

I prefer her to not drank cow's milk but instead prefer her to drank soy milk!.

Some people say she is getting cow's milk anyway if she is eating cheese or ice cream but my thing is, eating an occasional mini ice cream sandwhich or having some cheese is not as harsh as dranking whole cow's milk straight from the glass!.

Is that true!? Does it makes sense!?

I won't omit cheese and ice cream from her diet but I just do not want her to drank cow's mik whole like that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
I see nothing wrong with your decision!.

Anybody who's really educated themselves about it knows that cow's milk is not a very good source of calcium, anyway!. Just make sure you're paying attention to calcium sources because it is very important for a child!.

I don't see drinking milk vs cheese/ice cream as being a matter of harshness!.!.!.I just see it as a good way of reducing the amount of cow milk in the diet - which seems like a perfectly fine idea to me!.

Personally, some of the hormone concerns with soy would be something I would consider when dealing with a child!.!.!.I would probably look more into things like Almond milk, etc!. (which by the way is awesome with Honey Nut Cheerios)Www@FoodAQ@Com

to answer your actual question without being judgmental:

The primary ingredient of cheese and ice cream is indeed cow's milk!.

Eating a piece of cheese or a mini ice cream will contain roughly the same amount of milk as a glass of milk the same volume!. You can look at the ingredients of specific product to be certain - or call the manufacturer directly to ask for more information on the amounts of milk used!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I wouldn't give my child milk!.!.!.!. but ice-cream and cheese is OK in my opinion!. Though these days you can get some vegan cheeses that are so good many non vegans can't tell the difference!. As for ice-cream I eat gelato without gelatin!.!.!. made out of fresh fruit!. yum!.

It is a personal thing!. If your child eats a lot of raw broccoli chopped or sauteed per week it would be fine!. The greener and darker (green) the vegetable the more vitamins and minerals it will have!.

Have you tried Nori (Japanese) its a great source of vitamins and calcium!. Don't forget that calcium doesn't work if you don't add vitamin D with it!. You need both to have absorption!.

EDIT: Japanese don't consume dairy and they don't suffer from osteoporosis! Just like to mention that for the ones pushing the milk debate!Www@FoodAQ@Com

It does not make sense to me!. People with difficulties handling lactose typically have trouble with cheese and ice cream, just like they do with milk!. If it's digestion you're worried about, try live yogurt and live yogurt drinks!.

Dairy is dairy is dairy!. The problem with ice cream is that in addition to the cow's milk, you're giving her processed flours and sugar as well!. Not so healthy!.

I think your system is illogical!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

See I would think it'd be better to give her cow's milk and omit the cheese and ice cream!. Milk is processed already, and ice cream and cheese just processes it more!. Plus I think they're fatty!.
Just make sure she's getting all the vitamins she needs somehow!.

I think I read somewhere that Dr!. Spock advised no milk after the age of 2!.

I also admit I am new to the veggie thing and I haven't gone vegan yet (baby steps)Www@FoodAQ@Com

If it feels right to you that is what is important!. Some people will say that it's not logical but you need to feel happy about what she is eating, as you are the one who prepares it!.

Trust your insitinct - after all it's you 6 year old you're starving of vital nutrients - and you know what's right!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I understand what you are saying!.

But yes she is getting cows milk in ice cream and cheese!.!.!.!.if it's not soy based!.

Eating ice cream is made up of milk and cream from milk!. Think about that!. I would say that ice cream is somewhat worse than drinking it straight!. Just my opinion!.

If your a vegan for ethical reasons, I don't understand why you would feed your daughter dairy products!. You can find soy cheese and soy icecream too!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

No matter what you do, your child is still consuming cow's milk!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Either way, it's milk from the breast of a cow, just more processed!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That doesn't make too much sense to me!. The only difference is the form!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think what you doing to your daughter is wrong!.

I suggest you look at this site:
http://www!.notmilk!.com/Www@FoodAQ@Com

Mom, first of all, it's "drink," not "drank" in the context you're using it!. I'm not that anal about this stuff, but you are a parent and should set a proper example for your child!.

If you are worried about the junk in milk, then you would only feed her ice cream and cheese made from unpasteurized, free-range cow or goat milk!.

As for a child that young getting that much soy, it is not advised because of the phytoestrogens in there!. While us adults can handle it, a child's delicate system should not be overloaded with plant-based hormones!.!.!.just like you wouldn't try to feed her guggulsterones to try to make her more energetic!.

Anyway, your idea makes sense but you're still going about this all wrong!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

please buy a book of Ayurveda and read just a little, it is a must for mothers and parents, when it comes to raising children and what food to give!. you will find that soy milk can be beneficial for some type of people, and harmful for other!. meat can be also good for some, and harmful for others!. and there are many other things, not just food, but how much some people need to exercise ( some need more than other), how much sleep!.
how much sweet, sour, bitter, astringent tastes to be in their diet!.
it is very easy to understand, and it is amazing!. it will help your child alot!.
this is a thousand years old science, and even scientists are discovering that whatever is there is amazingly true!.
it has no radical things, it is very easy, there are just some simple things to follow that make alot of difference!.
for example, i am kapha type!. i sleep alot, and become lazy, i crave for sweets!. for that, to fix it, i just have to cut down sweets, and eat more bitter and spicy food!. to wake up early, and exercise more than other types of people!. i have learned that some fruits increase my kapha type, like mellons and mango, but apples are balancing me!. pumpkin is not very good, but cabbage is great!.

just take a look, even on internet!.

i hope i helped! Www@FoodAQ@Com

There is more of the cows milk used to make cream and cheese then skim milk the fat (cream and cheese) needed from milk from the utter is more then a few gallons compare to a glass of skim milk!. Soy is not all its cracked up to be check this site out!.
http://www!.electroherbalism!.com/Naturopa!.!.!.

If you don't think cows milk is good for your child which is understandable for some then get goats milk for her the body breaks it down a bit better!. Children need the beneficial fats and acids milk offers as part of muscular growth calcium is key for bone development!. There has also been traces of estrogen found in soy products which can be a danger as well!. While I love animals and was vegetarian for quite awhile myself I understand your reasoning just be careful especially when it comes to your child make sure (as I am sure you do) that you do the research on all the food you give to your child!. A lot of the "health food" out there has MAJOR health problems linked to it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

her bone will become more delicate with out milk i sugest finding a good organic whole milk like ORGANIC VALLEY its all organic and will keep her bones strong Www@FoodAQ@Com

Honestly, I think that she needs more than just occasional cheese and ice cream!. Calcium is VITAL at that age!. Lack of calcium from milk can lead to weak bones!. That's not to say it's necessary to have her drink only cows' milk, but implement it in an equal amount that you do the soy milk!. I'm hoping you are at least taking her health into account somewhat and providing alternatives for the calcium and protein intakes she needs to be healthy!. Your child is too young to understand the concept of veganism, and it sounds like you're pushing your beliefs on someone it's wasted on!. If your daughter likes cows' milk, let her have it until she is old enough to understand why you do not personally use animal products!. Then she can make the decision for herself!.
