Being vegetarian means you don't eat meat (including fish and poultry)!. Benefits include a lower risk of cancer and heart disease!. It's possible for a person to be a vegetarian and yet eat a lot of sugary treats, deep fried foods, fast food etc, so being a vegetarian is one facet (albeit a significant one) of a healthy lifestyle!.
Some individuals choose a vegan diet, which is vegetarianism + no animal products (dairy and eggs, and sometimes honey)!.
Other types of vegetarianism are listed: Lacto-vegetarianism includes dairy products but excludes eggs, ovo-vegetarianism includes eggs but not dairy, and lacto-ovo-vegetarianism includes both eggs and dairy products!. Semi-vegetarianism consists of a diet largely of vegetarian foods, but may include fish and sometimes even poultry, as well as dairy products and eggs!.
I am a lacto-vegetarian most of the time (no meat, and no eggs, but I do dairy)!. Because I don't eat meat, I supplement protein with whey powder some of the time, but "fake meat" most of the time (e!.g!., tofu and soy products made by companies such as Morningstar, Loma Linda, and Amy's, which are purchaseable on Amazon!.com and in the frozen foods section of your local grocery store)!. The "fake" products are of a taste/texture/look which is like hot dogs, burgers, steak, and other meat items!. Some people feel they taste funny, others like them very much, but best of all there are a lot of options today - a dozen I can think of right now for hot dogs alone!. Just be cautious as some of these "fake" products have high sodium content!.
Because I don't take in as much dairy as others, I also take a "B-complex" vitamin supplement, which is inexpensive!.
Your parents might not be used to cooking without meat as a staple on the table, perhaps if you locate and introduce them to vegetarian protein options (some mentioned above) they will feel less unsettled about the change!. If they see that this decision is for your health and betterment, and not something that will physically deplete or hurt you, they will be more sold as well!. Change always takes time!.
Good luck, and good for you!

I've been thinking about the same thing!. I've always wanted to be a vegetarian but no one ever supported me while doing it!. I think the only thing you can't do is eat any sort of meat!. I'm not sure if your allowed to eat cheese, milk, ice cream, etc!. But I think it's acceptable!. It's not like the animals are being harmed while milking them!. Just do what you think is right!. If your parents don't believe you or aren't taking you seriously, sit them down!. Tell them what they want to hear and what you want to tell them!. Because you aren't joking!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
