A question about cows and milk?!
So, as I understand it, cows produce milk only when they've been pregnant, just like humans!. In the dairy industry, they are repeatedly artificially inseminated to produce enough milk for human consumption!.
But, if this is true, then how could farmers many years ago milk cows routinely!? Obviously, they were not artificially inseminating them!. If cows only produce enough milk for their babies to drink, how did/does this work on small, purely natural farms!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Pregnancy causes mammals to lactate (produce milk)!. Once that process is started, as long as the mammal is continually milked, the body will keep producing milk because it believes milk is needed!. It's only when it goes for an extended period of time without milking that the body realizes it doesn't need to produce milk anymore and stops until pregnancy starts again!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
It is true that once milk is being poduced by the body it will keep producing until milking is no longer done!. That's the same for a woman as it is for a cow!.
My parents had a small homestead farm with all the farm animals, including a cow and bull!. When the cow was pregnant, they milked lightly so she had more available for her own nutrition, and when the calf was young they let the calf drink before taking milk for our family!. But once that calf was weaned off the cow, boy did we have milk enough for anything!. That's when we made cheese and butter!. They also sold milk to friends who didn't have a cow of their own, and there was always plenty to go around!.
A cow is a wonderful animal!.

In the dairy industry, they are only artificially inseminated until they get pregnant!. Sperm is put into the uterus where it finds an egg!. Same as when the bull does it!. Once they are pregnant, they are obviously no longer inseminated!. Modern dairy cows can only give birth once every 13 months!. So "repeatedly artificially inseminated" really means about once a year!. Some cows take a few breedings to get preggers but no big deal!.
And to clear up another issue!. Cows are not "raped" as I have heard said on here!. Cows come into heat every 21 days until bred!. They scream and rant around until they are bred!. They don't really care how they are bred!. If anyone ever tells you cows are raped, it's a pretty good clue they know nothing about cows and are just using a scare tactic they picked up somewhere!.
Dairy Cows are bred to produce milk!. It's simple genetic selection!. The higher producing cows were kept and their calves were kept!. The lower producing ones were culled!. The reason cows milk so much has nothing to do with hormones or any other nonsense!. The hormones only boost production to a mere 10 pounds per day extra!. Which adds up over time!. But come on, is another 5 pounds per milking (milked 2x/day) really gonna hurt the cow!? I think not!.
I can't explain evey little detail on here!. Do some research or email me privately for more info!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, once upon a time far more people had their own cows and were just taking a little extra for their families!. There wasn't as much market demand for milk because more people had their own!. Dairy farms were on a much smaller scale and females were serviced by bulls instead of being artificially inseminated!. Any female mammal can produce more milk than her offspring needs if encouraged to do so (by being milked by hand or machine!.) Even smaller farms take calves from their mothers and sell them for veal, though, because milk consumed by the infant is milk that can't be sold!. Essentially, the whole thing was similar, but modernization like miling machines and artificial insemination have made doing it on a massive scale possible!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Cows need to be pregnant to start producing milk, however once they are pregnant regular milking allows the cow to be milked for a long period of time!. Over time the amount of milk gradually decreases despite regular milking and for this reason the dairy industry will impregate the cows repeatedly; they are trying to get as much milk as possible and there is a lot more milk in the first few months after calving!. So the repeated impregnating is not necessary but in order to make the most money possible the dairy industry does it anyway!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
They just did it the natural way and got a bull to inseminate it instead!. Now it's just done on a much larger and less natural way!.
It's not the inseminating that's the most troubling!.!.!. it's the baby being taken away so it doesn't drink the milk which is naturally theirs anyway!. And there's the huge stress this modern farming is doing on the mother cows!. The Dairy industry just sees them as machines, takes the most natural thing in the world and manipulates it into a greedy business!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Sweetie, They kept a bull, or borrowed a bull form the farm down the road!. When a cow is in heat, she doesn't care how she gets serviced!. It is actually safter to artificially inseminated a cow!. There is no love involved in cow bull mating and sometimes the cow is injured by the bull!.
Cows and even humans will produce more then their babies need if more is drawn off!. This is why mom's can feed another mom's child (nurse made)!.
The real crime in modern milk production is the cafe is sold for veal, and the mom is kept hooked up to a milking machine!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Back in those days there were only about one billion people on this planet!. There also was no such thing as major corporations like Starbucks and Dairy Queen, so a lot less milk was consumed and sold!.
Bolder up there has it right!. When a pregnant woman's baby dies, she has to use a breast pump because she lactates!. Cows do the same thing!. After they give birth their baby is taken from them when it is one day old and it is slaughtered (not weaned) so that humans can drink her milk instead of her baby!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

if a cow is pregnant and you milk it, it will produce milk as long as you milk it!. they did have their cows have calves, from a bull and regular cow sex!. In the movie the hand that rocks the cradle the bad lady who wants to steal another lady's baby used a breast pump to keep her milk flowing long after her baby had died so she could feed a baby she would steal in the future!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Because of all the meat eaters out there, millions of cows are being slaughtered everyday!. So millions of cows need to be bred each day!.
They keep the milk cow pregnant to keep the milk flow going!.
If people stop eating cows then they'll stop producing them!.

Because a cow makes milk for the baby that they have, but they don't stop producing milk untill the baby doesn't drink it anymore!.

Cows, like all mammals, including humans, need to be pregnant only once to produce milk for years as long as they are milked regularly!. I know of a woman who still breast fed her 4 year old!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
A cow will give milk for about a year!.!.!.
You just wean the calf earlier than they'd choose!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
