How to eat healthy, locally, in NYC?!
I went on a short roadtrip with my Mom two weeks ago, and after hearing about the "localtarian" movement on a radio call-in show, she (a committed, political Republican), began deriding it as hopeless idealism!. Seeing how she is a committed Republican and all, I would have figured that she would have taken the opposite tack; and that the government's billion-dollar subsidies for large-scale farming would bring a lump to her throat!. After much discussion, we came up with a mutual challenge- for both of us to buy and eat local food (grown within 50 miles) exclusively for the next month, and try to make of it a healthy, balanced diet!. She lives in Tampa, Florida, and I live in NYC!. Initially, I thought I had the better end of the deal!. Now, after a week of living off mussels, monkfish, milk, yogurt, cheese, butter, apples, tomatos and various green vegetables from the Union Square Greenmarket, I feel distinctly under-nourished (in a very buttery, heavy sort of German way), bored with my food, and a whole lot poorer!.

LoL!.
Im sorry but when it comes to food i feel variety is the spice of life!. The longer the journey of the import the better!. I dont know, first you need to research things like "gross national product" in your locality,ie!. apples, are grown in NY and sold all over and out of the country!.
Second you need to plan your meals better, more balanced that is!. Substitute stuff you we dont grow here with a balanced diet of foods that do!. I mean you may have to eat barley in place of rice (I have no idea if we manufacture barley here btw)!. Sounds like a lost cause to me, especially living in NYC where we have EVERYTHING , and it tastes fabulous! Good luck and crack open a case of Ensure off the record as a suppliment during your experiment!. Take care!.

It's going to be very difficult to eat ONLY local foods!. Certain parts of the country specialize in certain foods, so you'll be restricting yourself to those foods that are grown/produced there!. Any packaged or processed food likely contains ingredients from all over the place!.
The point of the local food is not to eat only local food, it's to eat local food whenever possible!. Get what you can from the Greenmarket, and then go to the store for everything else!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The Union Square market is hardly the only place to get local food in NYC!.
Try the Bowling Green Greenmarket in Battery Park, the Jamaica Farmers Market in Queens, the Park Slope Farmers Market and the Sweet Pea CSA in Brooklyn, or the Staten Island Ferry Greenmarket!.
