Question: If a product says it contains wheat, does this automatically mean it contains gluten!? !?
Some products say wheat free or gluten free but i thought gluten was the protein in wheat, so if it says it contains wheat does it contain gluten also, or can it be gluten free but at the same time have wheat in it!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
It is possible to get a product that contains wheat from which the gluten is meant to have been removed!.

Wheat starch is produced from wheat flour by removing the proteins including gluten!. Years ago it was believed that all the protein could be removed, It is now recognised that it is technically impossible to remove all traces of protein and a small amount remains!. This is used in some products, such as bread, to make them taste better!.

Besides being in wheat, gluten is in oats, barley and rye as well as triticale and spelt and other some grains which are crossed with wheat or are ancient wheats!. There is no gluten in buckwheat!. This is not related to wheat, butt there are some people who are unable to have gluten who are also unable to have buckwheat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Wheat does contain gluten but isn't the only source of it( can't remember them all but barley def has gluten in it) hence you can have "wheat free" and still have gluten !.
"Gluten free" is automatically wheat free!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If your allergic to gluten you need to look for "gluten free" on the label!. A product that says "contains wheat" without saying "gluten free" would not be safe!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
