Why target the seal hunt especially?!
I'm writing a paper on this and having a difficult time - why do animal rights/welfare activists target the seal hunt, more than other controlled culls aimed at conservation (for instance, deer hunting in the US/Canada or the boar hunt in Germany) or abattoirs!? The seal hunt, since 1980, has been extraordinarily legislated and supervised to prevent animal cruelty (such as no killing pups, controlled killing methods), moreso than the majority of meat factories!?
So, what is the grounds for animal welfare groups focusing more media time on the seal hunt over other hunts or cruel animal killing methods!? Any thoughts!? Www@FoodAQ@Com

Probably because more people look at seals and go "awwwww how cuteeee" and think how can people do that, I want to help!. Yet they are eating a hamburger and don't value the lesser cute cows and pigs that die every day!.

It also takes a valuble food source away from indiginous predators in the area where seals breed and cluster!.
The starvation of the polar bear (who's already having a hard time as it is) and orcas (ditto for them) is one of the reasons the seal culling needs to be stopped!.
also, the hunting stresses some cows out so much that they fail to reproduce the next season!.

- The seals are cuter than most of the rest of the animals you mentioned and this aspect can be played up!. (They say Sex sells, but so does cuteness!.)
- The seals are not harvested for meat they are killed and skinned!. Why!? for luxury goods!? So in others words the only ones who benefit are the companies and the hunters!.
- The way to win any war is one battle at a time!. You can't simply step out and take on the big Meat industry and expect to win if you've got no other wins under your belt!. Doing this will continue to stack up resistance to what many consider all the atrocities you mentioned!.

The seal hunt is controlled but the animals actually are killed very cruelly!. It literally becomes a blood bath out there!. There are plenty of videos on the internet of seal hunts that you can see for yourself and get a better idea of how it works!.
