What are anti-oxidants and what foods have them?!

Question: What are anti-oxidants and what foods have them!?
Answers:
can't do better than the words of my favourite newspaper columnist, Dr Ben Goldacre:

*The antioxidant story is one of the most ubiquitous health claims of the nutritionists!. Antioxidants mop up free radicals, so in theory, looking at metabolism flow charts in biochemistry textbooks, having more of them might be beneficial to health!. High blood levels of antioxidants were associated, in the 1980s, with longer life!. Fruit and vegetables have lots of antioxidants, and fruit and veg really are good for you!. So it all made sense!.

But when you do compare people taking antioxidant supplement tablets with people on placebo, there's no benefit; if anything, the antioxidant pills are harmful!. Fruit and veg are still good for you, but as you can see, it looks as if it's complicated and it might not just be about the extra antioxidants!. It's a surprising finding, but that's science all over: the results are often counterintuitive!. And that's exactly why you do scientific research, to check your assumptions!. Otherwise it wouldn't be called "science", it would be called "assuming", or "guessing", or "making it up as you go along"!.*

I just love those last two sentences - wish more people would take notice of them

Edit* Cute1, I hate to see anyone duped!. 'Christine' is not a vegan; s/he's a non-vegan troll who has been trolling V&V for a long time using various IDs - notably Christie/Christy and Ashley!. Her/his aim is to make vegans look silly by pretending to be a particularly loony vegan!.

That's why so many of we vegans on here are so hard on her/him - we know her/his history and what s/he's up to!.

The famous niece came in to being when s/he was calling her/himself Ashley and claiming to live in London - some will remember the protest against meat in school dinners s/he claimed to be planning the following day at said niece's school - clearly unaware that every school in England was closed that week!.

Even with his/her current ID, s/he has claimed to be a juicetarian, a vegan and a raw food vegan - sometimes all in the same week!. Only someone intent on making vegans look really stupid would claim that cancer was caused by germs in meat!.

Talking of which, nobody actually knows what happens to make normal cells change so that they grow in an uncontrolled way, causing a tumour to form!. People whose life's work it has been to discover it don't know!. Perhaps you could explain to me how I 'self-made' mine!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Antioxidants are found in all fruits and raw vegetables!. Even raw meats have them!.!.!.not cooked!. Cook the vege, and meat and they're gone!.
You need them because our body produces free radicals, which are molecules with an electron missing!.
The free radical needs to, at all costs find an electron, so it steals one!. This thieving will result in damage to the cell and eventually cancer could develop!.
That's why we vegans (Christine especially), tell everyone to eat fresh raw fruit and veggies as much as possible!.
10,000 free radical hits happen everyday to every cell in our body!.
And we have 100,000,000,000,000 cells!. That's 100 trillion cells!.

Edit: Sorry guys I am not Christy, and I can't imagine that a troll would know as much she does about health!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
