Tell me how you transitioned to vegetarianism as a meat lover?!

Question: Tell me how you transitioned to vegetarianism as a meat lover!?
Although I am not a PETA fan, I am entertaining the idea of going mostly veg (keeping milk/eggs/fish)!. I want to for ethical reasons but I love the taste of meat (Mmm bacon! Mmm juicy burgers!), hate tofu and mushrooms, and don't want to be eating beans all the time! How did you do it!? Any tips and tricks from vegis that once loved meat with an unholy passion!? This is from somebody never said he'd NEVER give up meat, and low and behold, is now a long term vegan :-)

Ok, first off, recognise that your taste buds and cravings will adapt over time, so you're not going to be craving bacon and burgers so much after a short while if your diet is balanced and healthy!. Second, be aware also that if you're keeping fish in your diet, you won't be vegetarian (some people would say you're a pescotarian, but that's still a contentious issue)!.

If you're motivated by ethical reasons for not eating animals - e!.g!. animal welfare in factory farms and environmental causes for example -it's probably going to be easier to stick to than just for health reasons!. I'd consider carefully what your goal is: being clear about why you want to be veggie is going to be helpful in explaining to other people, answering their questions, and sustaining what you've started!.

Lastly, the nutrition pages of the Vegetarian Society - vegsoc!.org, and veganhealth!.org can help you find out more about good veggie nutrition, which is crucial to know if you want to sustain this type of diet in a healthy way!. There are plenty of veggie recipes on the Internet if you do a search, with many not involving mushrooms or tofu :) Find a few you like the look of, and get cookin!

Good luck!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, I'll give you a succinct enough answer: adaptation!. It's that simple!. Meat cravings are a matter of habit, really!. I used to love meat and such, but now I can't even stand the smell of any meat, be it beef or chicken!.
How easy it is depends on why you're doing it!. If you're doing it for health reasons, it'll be harder to stick to to it ("oh, it can't hurt once in a while"), but if you're doing it for philosophical, ethical, environmental, or aesthetic reasons, it will be much easier for your taste buds and your nose to recognize the smell and taste of flesh, no matter how saturated with spices it is!.

Now, just as you can wean yourself off a food, you can adapt yourself into some!. Beans will play a big part of your diet, so if you consume them regularly (once a week, once every two weeks) you might acquire that taste!. As far as tofu goes, you probably haven't tried the right tofu cooked the right way!. In my sources, I listed some tofu websites!.

Remember you can also get your protein from non-bean sources, like fake meats, milk, eggs, and cheese (if you're not vegan, that is)!. More protein info here: http://www!.vrg!.org/nutrition/protein!.htm

Oh, and I might add, eating fish doesn't make you a vegetarian, because they are animals!. Milk, eggs, and other dairy are okay for non-vegans!.

Hope I helped! Www@FoodAQ@Com

I agree with the person that said that you need to educate yourself!. Once you see how disgusting and cruel factory farming really is, then you won't ever want to contribute to it ever again!. I started out a meat lover also, but the thought of eating it now is repulsive to me!. And also, once you get dead animal out of your body, your body starts feeling better!.

My trick is that I read about factory farming daily!. It helps me to never forget what those animals go through!. If I forget and I end up eating meat, then I am ignorant!. If I don't forget and I eat meat, im a bad person!. I don't want to be either of those!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, I once loved meat with an unholy passion!.

I ate meat for breakfast, lunch and dinner, so I was a true carnivore!.

It initially took me about 12 months to wean myself off meat!. I would go for weeks without meat and then succumb!. But the last time I had a chicken sandwich, I felt so guilty about it, that the guilt ruined the meal!.

I saw three of those horrible films:

(i!.e!.)

1) Fast Food Nation
2) Meet your Meat
3) A Cow At My Table

And they helped me to keep off meat!.

In the film “The Corporation”, they mention about cows being injected with growth hormones, antibiotics etc…!.!.which humans then digest when they eat the steak!. Rather tends to put you off eating meat!.

So my best tip would be to watch some of the films mentioned above!.

At the start of my vegetarianism I was like, "Oh gosh, there's bacon! Oh man there's a chicken pot pie! That beef stew smells so good!" but then found LOTS of healthier alternatives!. Love it or hate it tofu will quickly become your best friend! Spincach is very good creamed and has a wealth of healthful benefits including protein!. Even a peanut butter sandwhich contains a wealth of protein as well as beans such as, garbanzo beans, pinto beans soy beans (a!.k!.a!. edamame my favorite!) Cheeses that are low in fat will serve you well as will grains such as quinoa !. Being a vegetarian is a test of self control- meat can be tempting but you'd be surprised at how many alternatives there are that even taste better! Www@FoodAQ@Com

first off, if you eat fish, you are not a vegetarian!.!.with that said!.!.!.

i live in alabama!. my family raises angus cows for "you know what" and have meat at every meal!. i was a give me a meat lovers pizza" person!.

i still love the taste of meat! when my family eats meat, i cook a fake meat and have whatever meatless sides they have!. fake meat is designed to be full of protien, the same as whatever the real meat version is!.!.
if you are having a veggie burger, it has the same amount of protien as a real burger!.!.getWww@FoodAQ@Com

The trick is to eat anything you like but to keep the animal out!. Include in you diet plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables!.

And you don't want to eat fish, milk and eggs, as they are high in protein!.!.too high, your body cannot handle the acidity they will generate in your blood!.

Educate yourself!.

It's not hard at all to stop eating meat when you know how it was produced!. In fact, it will probably disgust you!.

THEN decide for yourself!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I loved meat too!. I also hate mushrooms, tofu, spinach, goats cheese!.!. The main things that are meat substitutes!. I find it easy, pasta with no meat and a nice sauce is good!. also quorn is a great meat substitute, comes in many shapes and flavours!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I"d say don't give everything up at once!.!.Start with pork!.!.then red meat!. Look through websites n veg cookbooks!. Boca chix patties aren't bad!. I've heard the crumbles are good in veg chili!. Then if you're successful with that!.!.move on to giving up chicken/turkey!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I just went cold turkey!. After a while, meat just started to sound gross (I used to crave it, too)!.
You could try any of the vegetarian meat products you could find at a grocery store (they're not tofu)!. Eggs are good, too!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because I love her and she is a vegan, so I transit immediately into vegan!

(Everybody said that, now I start to believe that also!)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I was never much of a meat lover, I did love barbecued chicken!. Now I just eat tofu and veggie kabobs instead, which are just as good (in fact, they're A LOT better!)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Its much easier if you love quorn and eat fish! nearly 20 yrs now for me and I hat beans and pulses!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I was probably one of the biggest meat eaters before going vegetarian!. Before the transition the only veggies I ever ate were corn, and carrots, and the only fruit I ate was bananas and strawberries!. I ate meat at almost every meal, and thought I could never live without it!.

When I finally made the commitment to become a vegetarian, I found that the transition was not as difficult or hard as I thought!. I built up my list of vegetarian recipes, and after than I never looked back!. I have so many favorite vegetarian recipes that I don't feel as if I am missing out, or not eating tasty foods!.

I would suggest keep trying new foods and vegetables!. Experiment with different vegetarian recipes and see if you can find one's that you like!. also try cooking tofu and mushrooms in different dishes(although you do not need to eat tofu to be a vegetarian), you may find that you like these foods prepared a certain way!. I also found that I like most vegetables cooked a certain way(lightly steamed), and if they are over cooked I do not like the taste!.

Sometimes it takes me eating the same vegetable numerous times before I actually like it!. Most recently I found out I like zucchini, which I had tried before a few times and hated it!. Taste change over time, so keep trying new foods!.

Vegetables and other foods I have added to my favorite list since becoming vegetarian!.!.!. cauliflower, green beans, chickpeas, spinach, squash, mushrooms, peppers, onions, watermelon, cantaloupe, red grapes, etc!. All these foods I didn't like and it took a few times and different ways of preparing to finally enjoy them!. Now it is not uncommon for me to eat green beans, or cauliflower as a snack!.

I think the "trick" is finding recipes that you enjoy!. It may take time to replace your old favorites with new non-meat favorites, but after awhile it will happen!. The internet has many recipes and there are many books full of recipes(from easy meals to fancy dinners)!.
