What's better: to kill & eat 1 cow, or to uproot vegetables killing 100's of insects in the process?!
(I'm not trashing anyone; I'm an absurdist so I think nothing in life makes sense!.)
This Q is common among different buddhist sects since some buddhists eat meat regularly without hesitation while others remain purely vegetarian!.
Which is morally better: to kill 100's of insects when uprooting as many vegetables as the weight of a cow, or to kill 1 single cow for food (let's assume the cow never killed any insects while it was being grown)!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

We have not evolved as a species by being considerate around the life we kill to live!. No other living thing does!. Are we 'better' for the earth because we have this unusual belief!? Take a look at what we have done to nature, all in the name of civilization!. It's a bit arrogant to view what mankind has done and profess we are the highest form of intelligence on the planet!.
I used to work in a restaurant where I made sprouts every three days!. I remember having to harvest thousands and thousands baby plants before putting them out on the food line!. Not fun!.
I go back to a story my father told me of the Jewish Butcher!. The short of it is, even though the Butcher was fully educated, the town's elders did not approve of his daily methods until he became conscious of what he was committing and wiped the tears of sorrow off his face before practicing his art!.
Finally, does the insect choose his exoskeleton!? Does the plant choose where to root!. Do we choose our region or mother of our birth!? Does a flu virus choose it's city!? Does a cancer choose it's host and is it ethical we try to kill it!? Whether we take a potato from the ground, a pear from a tree, a hundred sprouts from a screened bed or a cow from a pasture, we have to take life to live!. I am truly sorry for this fact, and foremost, we need to live!. It's what we do!.

I think it's better to stop asking pointless questions like these!.
Even if vegetables did have feelings or tons of insects were killed in the crop process, it'd still be better to adopt a vegetarian diet that helps in conserving vegetation by decreasing cattle space demands!. And besides, the point is to adopt a diet as free of cruelty as possible, not 100% cruelty-free!.

Erm, how exactly are these '100's of insects' dying!? As far as I know I don't kill anything when I pull a carrot out of the ground!.
You might as well take the argument on and ask why vegetarians walk around when they might tread on something - as you say it's an absurd question!. The whole point is knowingly benfitting from another animals suffering!.
Contrary to some of your respondents I like to say that isn't really a good question - it's the sort of stupid thing people say all the time to veggies!. Call me a miserable, humourless git if you like, but then I haven't had a good steak for 12 years - so I'm bound to be a little cranky!. ;-)Www@FoodAQ@Com

What on earth makes you think that uprooting vegetables automatically kills insects!?
There are MANY farms who operate in sustainable ways the ENCOURAGE insects rather than killing them all!.
also, your question has no legs to stand on in the US!. Are you aware of how much corn is stuffed into beef cattle at feed lots!? Corn raised in monoculture field swimming in artificial fertilizers and pesticides!.!.!.dumping tons upon tons of chemicals into local drinking water resources!.!.!.

Cows are more intelligent!. Plus, organically grown plants involve less bug killing!. Many use ladybugs to naturally control the population of plant-eating bugs!.
Besides, The MEAT INDUSTRY is the #1 Resource sucker!. It takes thousands of gallons of water and hundreds of pounds of grain to produce meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I guess you're unaware that most of the crops grown in the U!.S!. are actually used to feed meat animals!.
If you uprooted the weight of a cow in vegetables, more than half of those vegetables would go to feed the cow, so using your scenario, there's no way the cow could be the better part!.
I can see why nothing in life makes sense to you because you're dwelling on the inane!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Insects have a very diminished Consciousness, compared to an actual animal!. The things on plants as well, are not insects, they are bacteria that provides us with nutrients!. So back a long time ago, when the world wasn't being destroyed; people weren't killing anything when they ate plants!. Thank the Corporations for this!!Www@FoodAQ@Com
That is a well good point and has just made me think!.!.!.!.!.i am quite happy to munch on a beef burger but will go mad if people kill spiders etc :)
Think a lot of it has to do with cuteness levels and size as it still makes me laugh how some vegetarians can eat fish because they are small and ugly!.!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well to enjoy the cow and maximize the benefits of eating meat, you have to eat it with vegetables so it would be killing a cow AND 100s of insects if you are an omnivore (like I am)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Because morals are not absolute and differ from person to person, it is up the the person to decide what is right for themselves!. No one can decide morals for anyone else!.

Uproot the veggies!. For every pound of edible beef, the animal has been fed 6 lbs of edible grain!. Not a very efficient cycle in a world where many people go hungry!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Killing hundreds of insects is much better because of the fact that insects are the most abundant living species in the world besides bacteria and other microscopic organismsWww@FoodAQ@Com
100's of insects doesn't equal a cow!. Cows are actual beings, bugs aren't!. Not saying I don't care about bugs, it's just that I would rather save the cow!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Uprooting vegetables! Insects breed really quickly!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is okay for living things that arent mammals to die!. Vegetarianism has some good, valid points but saving animals lives is not one of those valid points!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
