Is veganism crueller than eating meat?!
assuming we wished to compensate for the fact that no-one was eating meat, would we not need to use large areas of land for increased fruit/veg production, destroying habitats!? would not the use of pesticides and insecticides, not to mention increased use of combine harvesters, etc, mean millions deaths of (albeit tiny & microscopic) animals by the hour!? would not the prices of food shoot up globally, causing hunger, while areas where crops grow scarcely sink into famine and increased dependency on overseas imports/aid!?
I am not trying to promote the meat industry as I do not meat meat - but this is something that I feel needs to be answered!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
per acre yields of produce are greater than livestock!. So no, it is more efficient use of agriculture!. And all the chemicals you are talking about still go into the production of meat!. After all, they need food too, right!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
I don't think you realize just how much land and food goes into maintaining slaughter animals!. The number of plants that must be fed to an animal to produce enough meat for one human is greater than the number of plants required to feed that same human if he or she ate the plants directly!. If no one was eating meat, than all the food/land that had previously been earmarked to cows, pigs, etc, could go to feed humans directly!. The price of food would probably go down, b/c there would be more(since slaughter animals eat more that a person)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
You seem to assume a lot and based upon any assumption you can't come to a valid conclusion!. We have seen the cruelty at the sloter houses so without a doubt we can say that eating meat involves cruelty!. Vegetarians on the other hand are not intentionally or openly involved in cruelty to animals!. We breath and cause death to some microscopic beings!. Is it not cruelty!. So do you think we should stop breathing!? Spiritually speaking there is a limitation to being cruel or not being cruel!. It's the intention behind our act determines the form of cruelty!. Therefore vegetarian people are not crueler than meat eaters!. The truth is exactly the opposite!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
First off, it's not nice to poke people with a stick!.
Secondly, growing produce for human consumption uses much less land than growing produce for animal consumption!. If everyone all of a sudden stopped eating meat, and all the animals being raised for food, suddenly just disappeared, we would need much less food then we are able to produce!.
I am not promting Veganism, I personally feel that humans are designed to eat some meat, but not the size portions we have grown accustomed to!. I have reduced down to one serving of meat a day and would liek to reduce a little bit more, but thats me!. (And I know there is no way I can give up dairy or honey!!)

a lot of vegans are against the use of pesticides etc!. increased veg production may do some damage but when you compare it to the vast amount of damage meat production does!.!.!.
meat production is one of the most damaging problems in the world at the moment!.
plus, if everyone went vegan for ethical reasons then many would want to grow their own veg/get local produce to help solve this!.
hope i don't sound too condesending!.!.!. :-)Www@FoodAQ@Com

are you just not aware that every day we are finding new and better ways to control the growth of our food!?Green houses with climate control can make things grow faster in a smaller amount of space (I am not talking about artificially putting things in or on the plants) Please find a hobby if this is the only thing you have to worry about you really need to find other things to occupy your brain waves!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I don't know for sure, but I would think that the land being used to raise the food that cattle eat could be appropriated for raising vegetables, fruits, and grains for human consumption!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
It takes more land to feed the animals, to feed people
than
the land could be used to just feed people!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, because there are already loads of crop fields out there just for the animals that people are going to eat!. It makes sense to use these for us instead!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
okay first i read somewhere it takes 10x more land to produce meat than if we just ate a plant based diet
second, im not anymore worried about those pesticides than i am about all the hormones in our water from meat production, factory farm manure gets into groundwater and such and has slowly been raising hormone levels in our water which can lead to cancer!.
next, im not worried about these small microscopic organisms, they are not animals!.
lastly, the opposite would happen food prices would go down, and studies have shown that if everyone turned vegetarian we would have enough food to feed the whole planet, like i said it takes much more land and energy to produce that it does plant products!.
tell me if you found any holes in what i've said!.
i really hate "what if" questions, its like what if these unknown organisms don't like other organisms that eat meat, so they kill all of us "microscopic" humans that eat meat,
if we one day are "microscopic" nothing i do will change that and i will still be a sentient being and should be respected for that, and that does not change that fact that microscopic organisms are non sentient, and have no complex nervous system!.
i agree with you we should try to prevent suffering, in the organisms that CAN actually suffer!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Meat animals can be raised on land that is hostile to food plants, so there is some advantage to using a combined diet!.
Researcher and nutritionist Michael Pollan writes, in his recent book "In Defense of Food," that the ideal dietary plan is "Eat food!. Not too much!. Mostly plants!." But animal protein is essential to human health, as discovered and proven by Weston A!. Price and others!.
You don't have to eat animals to get animal protein!. Even fish provides enough animal protein to keep you healthy!. Eggs, cheese, milk, and other animal products are good for you and can be produced without animal cruelty!. (It's easy to raise a couple of chickens or even a goat in most suburban environments!) In fact, caring for a few egg-laying chickens is easier and often cheaper than having a producing vegetable garden!. That said, you CAN grow a lot of your own vegetables at home, even without much yard space!.
Commercial food production of any sort is often destructive to the environment and produces substandard food!. Enlightened use of both agricultural and pasture land can provide a good balance of vegetation and animal products for a decent diet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
