Do you have any tips for someone going Vegetarian?!

Question: Do you have any tips for someone going Vegetarian!?
Hi!

I have decided to go vegetarian because of the impacts that eating meat has on the environmental, social, and biophysical world!.

Did you know that if we all cut down on 10% of our meat we would feed the population that goes hungry each year!? Most of our grain goes towards feeding livestock!. And the meat is literally just that - animals stacked upon animals injected with antibiotics that never see the light of day!.

Anyways, enough with my rant - I just really want some tips on going Vegetarian, and how to get my protein ( I will not eat soy - it contributes to monocultured crops and it's bad for you )!.

Any good recipes!? How do I make the switch easily!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

"What kind of fish is good to eat and how should i cook it!?"
Well, then you aren't going vegetarian and certainly aren't going "sort of vegan!." There's no "sort of" about any of it!. These aren't exclusive clubs!.!.!.just definitions!. Vegetarians eat no animals but do eat animal by-products, vegans eat no animals or animal by-products!.

If you eat fish, you're a pescatarian!.

Anyway, your comment on protein!.
1!. Fish is protein since fish is meat (muscle tissue of an animal = meat)!.
2!. Yogurt is a dairy product and thus will supply protein!.
3!. If you will eat eggs, that is another good protein source!.
4!. All grains are a source of protein, the best being buckwheat, quinoa, and amaranth!.
5!. Veggies provide some protein, but avocado is actually a better source of protein than milk, complete with your amino acids!.
6!. Nuts!.
7!. Legumes (beans and peanuts)!.

If you keep a varied diet, you won't have a problem with protein!.

As for what fish is good to eat, it all depends on what kind you like!. Salmon was always my favorite, with halibut coming in second!. The best kind of fish to eat is always going to be WILD CAUGHT!. If it is not wild caught, it is just as nasty as slaughtered animals!. For example, tilapia is fed actual feces (find that episode of Discovery's Dirty Jobs if you don't believe me)!. They're pumped with antibiotics and hormones as well!. For cooking fish, it all depends on what flavor theme you're going for!. Fish is great simple, but you can always jazz it up with some kind of breading, spices, or slices of fruits and root veggies!.

So there you have it!.
You're a pescatarian who will get her protein from fish, eggs, yogurt, grains, legumes, and veggies!.

It's easy!. Just combine different plant proteins or combine plant proteins with low-fat dairy products or eggs in the same day

Be sure to include calcium in your diet:
Calcium-rich plant foods include spinach, kale, okra, broccoli, green beans, almonds, sunflower seeds, dried beans, enriched farina and calcium-fortified soy milk!. And, if you're eating animal proteins, include low-fat or nonfat milk, cheese, yogurt, sardines and salmon with bones for lots of calcium!.

also, make sure you are getting enough iron:
Sometimes eat plant foods high in iron like dried beans, lentils and kidney beans, whole-wheat bulgar, spinach, swiss chard and dried fruit!. Having foods high in vitamin C like fruit or juice at the same meal will increase the amount of iron your body absorbs

Soy is in a lot of vegetarian products!. I'm not sure of any that are made w/o soy but I'm sure there are for those allergic to it!.

But it is the best choice, to go vegetarian!. (Well after going vegan :) ) It is very good for the environment, your health, and conscience!.
Protein is in a lot of things you will notice!. It is not terribly hard/at all!.
Peanut butter, broccoli, potatoes, carrots!.

Just stop eating meat cold turkey!. I did that!. You crave it maybe the first week but your morals and willpower take over and you don't give in!. And then after a few weeks you love the progress you made so you don't think about giving in anymore!
It's great!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Where'd you get your info on Soy!? What about Soya Sauce!? Soy comes from Soybeans! You'll have a hard time being vegetarian if you don't eat soy! You can use kelp but it might be made the same way soy is! Kelp is seaweed in case you don't know! Kelp doesn't taste as good as soy! Protein and iron that's in dark green veggies!

First, good for you for making the decision to go vegetarian!. I am a vegan and would also suggest you look into this as well!. I'm not trying to preach, but only giving my personal opinion because veganism has even less of an impact on the environment!. This is because dairy cows and chicken farming sometimes have a larger negative impact than the cows used for meat because they are kept alive longer, obviously!. However, often times, the dairy cows that have worn out their useful time are slaughtered anyhow for meat!. Again, I don't want to rant either as I believe everyone is free to make their own decisions!. But, I do want to make a quick point about the hunger issue you stated!. You make a good point about cutting down our meat and being able to feed others, but that does not happen!. This is because hunger in other countries and our country is not a matter of enough food, but it is more a political issue!. There's enough food in the world to feed everyone, but there is a problem with dispersing food in a more reasonable and ethical way, in a sense "spreading the wealth"!. You are right though that a lot of grain goes towards feeding cows, which we could just consume ouselves, as humans, instead of passing it through an animal, but, unfortunately, hunger is not a matter of enough food!. Sadly, we have enough food for everyone, but our government and others do not do enough to work on this crisis!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
