Why do vegetarians need/want "meatless" meat products?!

Question: Why do vegetarians need/want "meatless" meat products!?
Seriously!.!.!.I was browsing vegetarian products at the grocery store today, and you guys have meatless bacon, chickenless chicken, beefless beef, tu-no (tuna), eggless egg salad!.!.!.!.

!.!.!.If you hate meat so bad, what is so great about fake meat!? Www@FoodAQ@Com

Turn the question around:

If meat-eaters like meat so much, why do they have to spice it, flavour it, add soy and other fillers, shape it into sausage shapes, patties, rashers and other shapes until it no more resembles the cow or pig it came from (in taste or appearance) than it resembles a head of brocolli!? See!? Same logic, same question!.

One reason fake meats are popular is probably that they make it easier for a new vegetarian or vegan to make the change from eating meat!. And they're fine for people who may have a moral objection to eating meat, but who enjoyed and miss it!.

But mostly it's just that they’re different tastes and textures, and who doesn’t crave that in their diet!?

And they don't resemble meat - sausages, patties, rashers etc are just forms, usually made from meat, but they can just as easily be made from seitan, tofu etc!. They’re not necessarily meat substitutes, but ways of processing and shaping food!. You never saw a round flat animal, after all, or a sausage shaped one!. They're just convenient shapes to form the centrepiece to a meal!.

Meat ‘substitutes’ aren’t the healthiest or cheapest food you can eat, but if you’re feeling lazy and uninspired they’re fine now and then And some of them do taste good!.

I went vegetarian in 1969 (I'm vegan now) and for many years there were no fake meats - just TVP chunks which were disgusting!. So I lived for many years without them, and could do so again!. But I like some of them, so I'll continue to eat themWww@FoodAQ@Com

Vegetarians certainly don't need them, and not all vegetarians want them!. Fake meats can fill in for texture and bulk in some dishes is all!.

In the same way that you can get meat ground, on the bone, off the bone, in a variety of cuts, etc, vegetarians can get their not-meat like that, too!. It's also nice, once in awhile, to have something that looks and behaves like what everyone else is eating, but without it actually tasting and feeling like chicken/beef/whatever!.

Were you to ever taste any of these fake meat products, you would very quickly understand that they don't really resemble the real stuff to any appreciable degree!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The eating of a fake meat is much different that eating actual meat!. No animal has to die in order for a fake meat to be produced!. I am against the cruelty behind the production of the burger and the health concerns regarding the consumption of meat!. Many people have nothing against the taste of meat, it is simply the cruelty that goes along with it!.

Since faux meat is healther( in cholesterol, saturated fat, etc) and there is no cruelty involved, than the consumption of the product is no different that eating any other vegetarian food!.

I myself, liken it to a person who is watching cholesterol who switches from regular bacon to turkey bacon!. Should the person avoid turkey bacon because regular bacon is high in cholesterol!.!.!. no, because what they are looking for is something healthier, just the same as vegetarians are looking for a cruelty free and healthier alternative so they choose fake meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegetarians usually choose not to eat meat because they disapprove of the treatment of the animals, the ways in which they are slaughtered, the devastating environmental effects, the hormones, antibiotics and pesticides found in meat, and the health problems these cause!.

Few people choose vegetarianism simply because they don't like the taste, and although most processed meat analog products are not wonderful for your health, they can at least be consumed with a clear conscience!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i know quite a few vegetarians who don't like meatless meat products!. they never liked the taste of meat!. otherwise, vegetarians are against meat for moral reasons, not taste reasons!.

personally now that i'm vege the smell of meat disgusts me!. i do eat a fake chicken product but only because it's convenient!. if it taste's a lot like chicken i'm really turned off!. and i'd always prefer tofu, but tofu takes a while to make well and i have a lot of dietary restrictions!. if i had a normal digestive system i would barely ever eat fake meat products!. i'd have a lot of beans and legumes instead, but, alas, i have ibs and i can't!.

fake meat doesn't really taste like meat!. it's just a similar meal substitute for things like sandwiches or pizza toppings!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Most vegetarians and vegans grew up eating meat!. Many of us went veg due to ethical considerations--the animal cruelty and/or environmental issues--or health considerations!. Analogues give us the taste and almost texture without all the problems inherent in meat production/consumption!. Omnivores who are trying to reduce their meat consumption might eat these as well for the flavor and texture!.

Remember, the "flavor" you associate with meat is mainly a matter of seasoning!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Your question: Why do vegetarians need/want "meatless" meat products!?

My answer: Because they are vegetarians, smart one!. I don't eat all fake meat!. I have vegan burgers which are mostly vegetable and have no relation to the meat product at all and I enjoy the vegan burger!. Some people just happen to like these products, so people like you can either try it( See whats so great about it) Or sit here asking questions complaining about it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Simple really, a vegan or vegetarian doesn't "hate" meat they hate the fact that an animal must die and undergo horrendous pain just become a meal
VERSUS
Vegetables and plants who lack a central nervous system therefore not enabling to feel pain!.
also, all those 'fake" meats are basically the opposite of real meat for your body!.
Real meat: cancer, stroke, heart disease, obesity!.
"fake" meat: THE TOTAL OPPOSITE!
Now, let me see!.!.!.
Which one do I want to choose!?
Pain, torture, and my own slow death
OR
Health, painless and great for me!.
LOL
Stupid question really!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

you're generalising!.

some vegetarians are vegetarians because they don't like the taste!. they do not eat fake meats!. other vegetarians are vegetarian because they don't believe in killing animals, or for health reasons!. those fake products are much healthier than their bloody counterparts!.
i don't eat meat because i don't believe in the cruelty and suffering that goes along with meat!. that doesn't mean i don't like the taste!. i love the taste!. i eat fake meats for that reason!. i love the taste!. i love eating fake chicken sandwiches, i love eating veggie burgers with veggie bacon!. what i don't like is the killing that goes along with it!. my fake meats have the same taste, minus the killing!.

everyone wins!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am a vegan, but I didn't become one because I hated the taste of meat!. I became a vegan because I didn't like the way animals were treated when being raised for food and I didn't want to contribute to their suffering!. I actually like the taste of meat, but I definitely don't think it's worth eating it because of the way the animals were treated!. So that's why I like "meatless" meat! I love the taste and also love the fact that no animals were harmed in the making!. That is why I eat mock meat :) Hope I helped!Www@FoodAQ@Com

i am a vegetarian for ethical reasons!. no animal was harmed making those things!.!.why do you want dead animals on your plate!?

i like the taste of meat, i ate it all the time before opening my eyes and realized "meat is friggin murder!" i can have the taste of it, and not causing any harm to an animalWww@FoodAQ@Com

I don't eat meat for ethical reasons!. But i do like the taste of chicken!. So to be kind to chickens and still get to eat things I consider yummy, I eat chicken-less chicken!.

Although I do prefer some lovely cooked broccoli or a stir fry or a tofu curry over a meat substitute anyway :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

No one wants to eat the SAME THING every day!. Thats part of the reason!. Another part is if you are raised on meat, its sort of habitual!. !. !.

also it makes it easier for some people!. I know whenever my family is making dinner (all meat eaters) I can just have the same thing except with my "faux meat"

That simple!. =]Www@FoodAQ@Com

Who ever said vegetarians hated the taste of meat!? Most of us just don't like what animals have to go through to get meats!. That is why we have those things!. So we can still have the flavors we loved without having to feel guilty about the slaughter of animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Why is this concept so hard for meat eaters to understand -

Fake meats are made out of: beans, grains, and veggies; not meat!. They provide a complete protein!.

BTW: If you eat a gingerbread man, does that make you a cannibal!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

We don't "hate" meat!. We hate killing something just to eat it!. Seriously !. !.!. if you could have the health benefits of "fake" bacon and the same great taste, where's the downside!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

because they are vegetarian !.!.!. duh!. it's not fun if you only eat vegetable all day (imagine if you eat salad everyday)!. you will get bored, i suppose!. so, they also put "fake" meat in their food!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well it helps us fit in and is something familar!.
but i understand the concept that you are getting at!.

like i used to love gardenburger riblet ribs!. soo tastey!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

They taste good, and animals aren't exploited for them!. Plus they're generally healthier than real meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

This way no animals have to suffer and be slaughtered!. The world gets a chance to recover, and our health is better!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

they eat it because they like the flavor
but its better eating something that taste
like it rather than a living breathing thing
stupid perveWww@FoodAQ@Com

Animals aren't killed to make it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

proteinWww@FoodAQ@Com

I drink my meatless meals with wine less wine!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have often wondered the same thing!. I assume it's because many recipes call for meat and vegetarians are trying to convert them to their own tastes!. Since, like in all things, few people understand the art (of cooking) an industry has grown to fulfil the need!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm just grateful I eat real meat!. Those fake meats are so nasty! And when I think about how many small rodents and insects died just to make a soy "chicken" nugget, I get all sad!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

to appear normal!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
