What's SO great about being "Vegan"?!

Question: What's SO great about being "Vegan"!?
To each his own but I could never go my whole life without some grilled chicken or some good gingerbread cookies!. How do you guys do it!? Edit: NOT being mean!. I'm baffled how people can eliminate almost everything in the 4 food groups & still find ways to eat & stay healthy w/o ANY meat not even fish especially!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
They're not healthy!. Have you ever noticed how pale and pasty looking they are!? And they are always so smug about it!. I spoke to this woman on the phone who sells supplements and she was recommending something that cleans the blood so that the vitamins are absorbed better!. And she was telling me that even HER blood was dirty under a microscope and she's a vegan!. She was waiting for me to be as shocked as she was!. She was so full of herself!. I wanted to say, 'yeah, your blood was dirty because the nutrients you need to keep it clean are probably found in meat!." But I didn't want to be rude!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Being vegan is "SO" great mainly because I know that I am not causing any harm to any living being on the earth!. I have been vegan for nearly 16 years now, and I am healthier than all my carcass eating friends!.

It is actually healthier for you to be vegan that a meat eater
The first thing that always comes to mind is Ptomaine poisoning! What about all the varieties of tapeworms!? Clostridium!? All are totally contained to meat sources!

Listeria, Salmonella and E!.Coli!? All come from animals and that's where most people get them although there is always a *slight* risk of produce being contaminated from infected animals!.

Lower risk of heart disease, Osteoporosis, less risk of anemia, much lower rates of *any* cancer!

Is that enough or should I continue!? Actually, the bulk of our nutrients (including protein) come from fruits and vegetables!.

Intake of cholesterol for non-vegetarians: 300-500 milligrams/day!.

Intake of cholesterol for lacto-ovo vegetarians (vegetarians who eat dairy and eggs): 150-300 milligrams/day!.

Intake of cholesterol for vegans: Zero!.

I have the priviledge of knowing a few really healthy vegans (not the ones that eat vegan junk food)!. What's so great!? Well, their eating habits don't cause factory farmed animals to be tortured and killed!. It's selfish for people to take advantage of animals when we have lots of other options!. And let's face it, if you had to do the dirty work of slaughtering and butchering your own meat, would you still eat meat!? It's just easy because someone else did it and package it in nice neat cutlets that don't look like a cute cow, lamb or chicken!. If you don't think a milking cow isn't tortured, you've never read a single article on factory farmed dairy!. They have very low cholesterol and body fat which greatly reduces their risk of all the major illnesses that most Americans die from; heart disesase, diabetes, and cancer!. Factory farmed meat has HUGE environmental impacts (read Rolling Stones Magazine's "Boss Hog" article) if this is new news for to you so they are reducing that impact tremendously through their choices to be vegan!. I'm sure there's much more but I'm tired!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's not hard!. It's a choice, I'm a volunteer not a conscript!. I think it's possible I eat a wider range of foods than you do - and good gingerbread cookies don't need animal products, you can 'veganise' just about any recipe!.

There's plenty of calcium and protein in a good vegan diet; any diet - vegan, vegetarian or a diet that includes meat - can be very healthy or very unhealthy, depending on what's eaten!.

Pale and pasty!? Vegan for 13 years and my cheeks are still rosier than I'd like - I'd like a little paleness!. Vitamins/supplements!? - many, probably most, vegans don't take them!. Somebody will be saying all vegans are skinny next - I wish!.

I doubt people who make generalisations like that have actually met any vegans, they just rely on tired, unimaginative stereotypes
==============================

Edit

** Cherry, meat does not increase the risk of most cancers!. The facts are these - a diet high in meat, particularly red and processed meats, is a known risk factor the development of some colorectal cancers!. A diet high in meat and fat may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer!. A diet high in red and processed meats is thought to possibly*increase the risk of stomach cancer, and a diet high in dairy is thought to be a possible risk factor in prostate cancer!.

That's about it for any known connection between meat and the 200+ diseases that come under the umbrella title of cancer!. There's enough that's good about being a vegan without repeating myths!.

** Andrew: Some of us have already grown up!. Are you suggesting that non-vegans don't get osteoporosis!? I am in the highest risk factor group for osteoporis because of my age and gender!. In addition I take daily medication that has 'loss of the mineral content of bones' as a possible side effect!. A recent bone density scan showed no loss of bone mass in this vegan!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm not sure how you are getting 4 food groups instead of 5!. I'll assume you've grouped fruits and veggies together!. Even so vegans are only eliminating one food group - dairy!. They eat fruits and veggies!. They eat grains, potatoes and other carbs!. And although you may think the other food group is meat it's actually the protein group, and there are plenty of proteins that are not animal derived (beans, nuts, soy, etc)

There is nothing a human needs that can't be found in ways that don't kill animals!. There are a few things that a vegan diet is missing, like B-12, but there are vitamins for that!.

How do they live without meat!? Willpower!. Or often meat gets to the point where it looks and smells gross!. I feel a little sick to my stomach when I smell beef cooking!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Being a vegan does NOT force you to eat properly!. If you believe that it's ridiculous and hilarious!. Vegans can be JUST as unhealthy as the person who goes to McDonald's everyday!.

I know I personally could never be a vegan, I could be a vegetarian, yes!. It's hard!.

If you want to help the environment and animals EAT ORGANIC FOOD!. The animals are treated fairly and live out their lives happily!. The fruits and veggies are not tampered with (pesticides, steroids, etc!.)

You do not need to be a vegan nor a vegetarian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

its not easy to stay healthy whatever you eat in todays world!. that's my opinion anyway!.
I'm not a vegan or a vegetarian (just yet) but slowly discovering more and more ways to eat healthily and balanced diet without meat, fish, eggs or dairy!.
i will never be truly vegetarian or vegan but probably predominantly so!. Not so much just because of animal welfare but because of health benefits!. my son is also cowsmilk intolerant so dairy free has been part of our life for quite a while!.
there are so many delicious recipes for vegans which give you all the nutrients you need to live a healthy life!.
what you shouldn't forget though is that you can't just cut out meat fish eggs and dairy - you need to do your research and find out ways with which you can replace them, with soy products, nuts, seeds, etc!.

it isnt an easy lifestyle choice and most people who make it probably think about it quite a bit before making the change!.

the great thing about being vegan or vegetarian is knowing you are living healthy and thinking about what you're putting in your body, you know you can cook delicious meals without any animals having to be killed unnecesarily!.

its different for everybody though!.and at the end of the day its maybe no more great to choose being vegan than it is to choose not to drink alcohol or to not eat crisps cos both those things can be hard in our country too :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

For me, it's quite simple!.
Being a vegan outweighs the so-called benefits of eating meat!.

These days, meat and animal by-products are riddled with antibiotics, steroids, growth hormones, blood and pus (in the milk)!.!.!.the list goes on!.

I don't feel that those things belong in my diet and I am a MUCH healthier person now that I've given it up!.
As far as the food groups are concerned, we have free range to eat what we'd like in fruit, vegetables, beans, legumes and whole grains!. I hardly consider that "eliminating" much of anything!. We can and do still eat from the majority of the pyramid!.

I might have to ask you, what's SO great about eating meat!? Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm a vegan because I don't believe I have the right to take away any living things' life!. I don't even kill cockroaches or spiders in my home!. Its not even that hard, there are so many substitution foods out there that taste like the the real things!. I wouldn't call myself great though, its just a life style choice and I am not against anyone who is not a vegan!. :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

What baffles me is the no dairy!?!?!?!?!?!? How can you say milking an animal hurts them!? I understand if you get your milk from the produce section in the store because the cows are usually in cow mills!.
But I milk my own goats and make cheese, butter yogurt, ice cream etc!.!.!.
My goats are spoiled, explain to me how I am harming them!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is hard, but nobody forces you!. Some people want to stop the cycle of injustice to animals and that is how they do it in a small way!.

It is also healthier and better for the environment!.
Nothing should have to die so I can have a snack in my opinion!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

no idea!.!.!. i couldnt do it!.!.!. good for the people who do i guess, but i agree with you, how can you still find ways to stay healthy!?!? i mean, vegans don't even eat animal products, so that means no milk, no cheese!.!.!.!.!.!. no honey!.!.!.!.

http://answers!.yahoo!.com/question/index!?!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i've been a vegetarian for going on 10 years now
i just recently turned 19 and it is not hard for me

but now if i eliminated dairy, that would be hard for me

but there are substitutions for all the products out there
it just gets priceyWww@FoodAQ@Com

I am not a vegan but I think that it is more about encompassing a whole life style rather than thinking about what you have given up!. I admire those who can dedicate themselves to that ideal!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

People who have a strong sense of what there morals or values are usually are strong people who stick to their beliefs no matter how hard they are!. I personally am not a vegan but I have strong morals and values that are hard to stick toWww@FoodAQ@Com

It's great because you can relate to your other vegan college friends who just started finding themselves and caring about the environment!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

im not vegan but i do think some people do it because they feel like there really helping animals!. and some people just get sick after knowing there eating animals or animal products, such as cheese milk meat and so many moreWww@FoodAQ@Com

Well i cant go my life with out chicken or cookies either
but i think it makes them feel good about not killing animals and staying healthy but i dont know cause im not one Www@FoodAQ@Com

it's about prioritising!. Do you care more about animal suffering or great tasting food!? It's a personal choice,Www@FoodAQ@Com

I know! i could never be vegan myself! i love steak and seasame chicken, bacon alla that! Haha I'm with you!. They just eat a lot of vitamins!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I agree with you totally!. Being Vegan all but forces you to eat properly though!. I can see why people would want to do it!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

For some people ethics are more important than convenience or the way their food tastes!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's a personal choice!. It's like someone asking you, "How can you eat meat!?"Www@FoodAQ@Com

its actually a lot easier than you think!. whats so great about it is that we arent eating dead abused animal flesh!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

nothing! I like all forms of food! i'd even eat the fence post if I had too!Www@FoodAQ@Com

No more food poisoningWww@FoodAQ@Com

cuz they get to hav osteoporosis when they grow up!. YAAAAAAY!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I HAVE NO CLUE! i am very proud meat lover!. (and everything that is animal-related) and to be honest animals are here for us, so why not make use of it!? Www@FoodAQ@Com

I personally think there's nothing really great about being a vegan!. There's a very low fat, calcium and protein intake!. Plus who can resist a nice meaty steak or a rack of ribs anyways!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
