Medicine VERY anti-vegan?!

Question: Medicine VERY anti-vegan!?
I am sick and had the WORST sore throat ever, and I remembered last time I got better right away with Tylenol Cold multi symptom tablets!.
So I bought some more and didn't read the ingredients!. They aren't gelcaps so I checked for gelatin only but just now as I was typing up the ingredients (b/c i think I am getting an allergic reaction) that I realized it has shellac in it!. And probably more stuff to that I don't that isn't vegan!.

Any cold medicines OTC that are in fact vegan!?

it also contains pregelatinized starch-- gelatin hidden in that word, is this animal derived too!?!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Shellac is not vegan, as it is the secretions of a beetle!. Pregelatinized starch is starch that has been cooked and dried so it can form a thickening paste, so that's vegan!. (http://www!.encyclopedia!.com/doc/1O39-sta!.!.!. Unfortunately, all medications have gone through animal testing; it's the only way it can be brought to market!. You can however, avoid buying from companies that test other products on animals!.

No creatures are harmed to obtain shellac-it is the secretions of an insect which is harvested from tree bark where it was deposited!.

I doubt that it is animal derived, the ingrediants are probably synthesised in a lab, which happen to also be found naturally in animalsWww@FoodAQ@Com

Shellac is from an insect, but manure is from a cow and it's somehow OK for vegans to eat produce that's fertilized by manure!. The insect isn't harmed to harvest the secretions they leave behind, so it must be one of those gray areas for veganism!.

The gelatin you ask about could be from either animal or non-animal sources!. You'd have to ask the folks at Tylenol to know for sure!.

Ah, I see there's a double-standard when it comes to manure!. Well, some of us see it for what it is and we move on!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
