Question: Why do some restaurants consider fish to be vegetarian!?
I have seen it on some menus in certain restaurants!. It annoys me as they obviously haven't got a clue!. I avoid them in case they cook the real veggie food in animal fatWww@FoodAQ@Com

You have a good point!. If someone eats seafood, they are not vegetarian; they go by the term pescatarian!.

Restaurants should stay up-to-date with the correct terminology!.

What restaurant does that!? Ask for the manager and chew him out for the place's stupidity!.

That said, a lot of places put vegetarian items on the menu, but don't actually tell the line chefs this!. Or worse, the waiter fails to say the order is supposed to be vegetarian!.

Other issues include places that offer veggie burgers, but cook them on the grill amongst the steaks instead of using a separate clean frying fan!. And even if the dish says it's vegetarian, a lot of the time they still use animal fats, or use the same meat-based stock or sauce!. If it's really important to you that the dish be truly vegetarian, it's best to ask the waiter/waitress a lot of questions - what's in the dish, does the sauce/stock/broth used have meat in it, do they use separate grills or at least use a separate pan for veggie dishes, etc!. Don't forget that lots of food also contains lard, which is an animal fat!. So, a lot of Mexican dishes that use tortillas or beans may not truly be vegetarian, for instance!.

If it's on the menu, the chefs should be able to make it properly!. A good tip, compliments to the cooking staff, and recommending the place to friends are good ways to encourage a restaurant to continue to provide properly prepared vegetarian dishes!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am a former chef and never offered a fish or other dish as the veggie option, it was a pasta without eggs, with a veg based sauce, made with olive oil, if a restaurant is offering a fish option as a veggie option, they obviously do not know the concept of vegetarian or vegan food diets!.

It is ashame that places do not allow for those who are not eating meat and to adjust dishes to allow them to enjoy the dining experience, when I worked we had many in the hotels I was with, even in Jamaica we sold a traditional ackee and saltfish dish a Jamaican favourite, but had a veggie option made with calallo instead of fish!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A lo_mcg said above this is the reason I hate when people say that they are vegetarian but eat fish and or chicken!. These people add to the misconceptions about what a vegetarian diet is!.

I think you're wise to avoid them period!. I've learned to be very specific about the questions that I ask!. Rather then "is this vegetarian!?" I'll ask "does this soup use beef or chicken broth!?" or "is there anchovy in the salad dressing!?" etc!.

Well there you have it - many restaurants, along with many catering companies, think fish is an acceptable dish for vegetarians because of those people who eat fish but insist they are vegetarian!. They've had 'vegetarian' customers who are happy to eat fish, so they assume it's something vegetarians eat!.

In the "old days" vegetarian was thought of as not eating meat or pork, but fish and chicken was OK, and there are still some of us "old folks" still around!.

There is more than one type of vegetarian!. Some will eat fish, some won't!.

Some go so far as to avoid eggs, and milk as well as meat!.

Just because your brand of vegetarianism does not include fish in your diet does not make people who eat fish occasionally wrong or non-vegetarian!.

My brand of vegetarianism includes all animals who eat vegetation!. And we are unlikely to ever be in agreement!.

the most annoying thing is in asia they mainly consider CHICKEN to be veg! I was in malaysia and ordered vegetrian fried rice in the hotel and it came with chicken, we asked why and they said most vegetarians eat chicken don't they!? we were like NO!

I have no idea!. It really irritates me!. Have you ever been in a restaurant and the only "veggie" dishes have fish!? Happens a lot where I live!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
