Question: Is velvet made from an animal!?
I am trying to convert to a cruelty-free wardrobe and need information about which materials are animal products and which are not!. For coats, shoes, purses, etc!. Any suggestions!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
no velvet is a man made synthetic!. May I suggest that while going cruelty-free that you switch to natrual fibers too and go green!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Velvet is made, ideally, from silk!. Cotton can also be used, though this often results in a slightly less luxurious fabric!. More recently, synthetic velvets have been developed, mostly polyester, nylon, viscose, acetate and mixtures of different synthetics, or synthetics and natural fibres (eg!. viscose and silk)!. Velvet can also be made from fibres such as linen, mohair and wool!. A cloth made by the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo from raffia is often referred to as "Kuba velvet"!.

A small percentage of lycra is used sometimes to give stretch!.

so in answer to your question - no (unless its from wool, but then its only the hair not anything actually to hurt the animal)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Velvet can be made from any type of thread, although traditionally, velvet was made with silk thread, making it even more costly!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's not made from an animal but if it is made from silk or wool then it is made from an animal product in which case as a vegan you would need to avoid it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

To those that mention silk!. Silk comes from a living species called the "silkworm"!. In that context a vegan should leave well alone!Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, I'm pretty sure it comes from others threads!. Like silk and cotton!. Normally silk!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Are you made from a tree!? :]Www@FoodAQ@Com
