I would go, maybe bring some dishes as well (potluck style Christmas!?) and just tell them BEFORE Christmas that you've decided to become a vegan!. (More than likely they will be confused/concerned, or your parents might want to get tips on stuff to make for you, so you don't avoid eating what they make!.)
One thing though, if you go!.!.!. and they ask WHY you chose to become vegan!. DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT TALK LIKE YOU ARE SELF-RIGHTEOUS!. This will be THE #1 thing that will make everyone in your family go nuts and think you are being rude/selfish/a jerk!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's not like they don't know about your new-to-them habit of eating small children, for heaven's sake!. Tell whoever's hosting that you won't be eating turkey or stuffing cooked inside the bird, but that you're looking forward to real mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, crescent rolls, and whatever else is traditionally on the table!. One nutritionally lopsided meal won't kill you!. Get some extra protein at other meals that day!.
If you're likely to be treated as a guest, then it's okay to bring one vegan dish to share!. More might overwhelm the table and make the cook feel she hasn't met her guests' needs, which would, of course, be rude!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Congrats on becoming vegan! It is a great journey to experience in your life time!. And since you are just starting out, you will have alot to learn and of course unlearn!. Be confident in your decision, but not overly confident and self righteous!. Everybody has a right to choose, and your choice is just as valid as everybody else's!. And you have your reasons and stand tall when asked, and inform - not preach!.
Our whole family has been vegan now for 5 years, and the first years were tough!. The whole Thanksgiving and Christmas family gatherings in which you find out are all centered on food! I just ended up cooking the meal we would have at our house for Thanksgiving and bringing it to the family gatherings!. They were put off the first year, but by now they are curious as to what is what when we bring stuff!. I know now to make alot as they are all wanting to try it now!. Some family members are even attempting to veganize their side dishes (which is easy to do they found out -"so many alternatives are out there! right in our own grocery store that I never knew was there!")!.
You could also tell them that you are just trying it out for awhile and see what health benefits come from it!. Like it is an experiment of life!. And that you are new to it and just trying to get educated about what to eat and what not to eat!. And then present them with something that you can eat that you made yourself!. And you can ask the person who made what if they know if it has any dairy or eggs in it!? and if the answer is yes, just tell them that it looks wonderful but you are abstaining from dairy for awhile!. Little things to tell them like that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Your's sounds like more of a family relations problem then a vegetarian/vegan problem!. I'd just bring a vegan dish for everyone to share!. You can eat the veggies at the family meal too along with what you brought!. Do not allow them to bate you into an argument over your decision!. Your an adult and this is your personal choice!.
BTW: I'm bringing a nut roast to my family's Thanksgiving meal!.

Personally I would bring a dish or two - enough to share with everyone and don't mention it as being vegan or to draw attention to it!. Then just eat what ever is around that you feel you can eat!. Perhaps mention it only to the family member that is cool with it or who is preparing the meal and see what they are making that you might possibly be able to eat!. Cranberries come to mind, sweet potatoes if some are made plain!.!.!. you can work around it creatively!. I come from a long line of meat n potatoes folks lol and I have to be a bit creative but I still manage to eat vegetarian without much fuss!. My family knows and when they try to tease me or give me a hard time about it I just smile and say well to each their own please pass the salad lol!.!.!. don't let people get you down!. You have just as much right to choose the lifestyle and diet that you like as anyone else!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
just bring some vegan dishes and you should be fine!. in my family it is considered rude NOT to contribute a dish or two for thanksgiving!. it's a family event and the entire family should want to contribute!.
as long as you bring enough to share i don't think it's rude at all, and they'll probably appreciate it since most people don't know how to cook for vegans!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Just tell them!. it's not like you've shaved your head and joined the Hare Krishnas for heaven's sake! You've just chosen not to eat animal products!. And if some family members think you're "nuts" well!.!.!.that's their problem!. And it would not be rude for you to take some vegan dishes!.!.!.in fact most people would be surprised how much they would enjoy vegan dishes!. I have a vegan friend who brings several dishes to her family get togethers and always comes back with empty bowls!. A couple of dishes have become requested family favorites!.
Good luck, and enjoy your holiday!Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you're afraid then don't go!. That would be the only thing to stop you!.
Otherwise, man up, offer to bring some vegan food for yourself and whoever would like to try!. It would be best to contact whoever is hosting the get together and discuss options with them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
