I'm a vegetarian, what are some good sources of protein?!
I am wanting to start a diet high in protein to try to lose a little weight!. Since I'm a vegetarian, i do not eat any meat, chicken or fish included!. What are some other sources of protein!? I eat refried beans but are those healthy for you!? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hi & good luck to you!. I've been veggie for over 21 years & cos I'm naturally skinny I don't really know the 'weight loss' implications of my suggestions, but here they are anyway:
I'm not vegan, so I do eat quite a lot of cheese!. Good protein, but high fat content so might not suit you!. Eggs are good protein, too, of course!.
All nuts are good protein sources sources, but beware of salted nuts cos of the salt content - too much is bad for you!.
All pulses are good (and low fat too); things like lentils & all sorts of beans!. Beans (be adventurous with different types) are great in stews (I live in England & it's very cold weather here at the moment - just right for stews, casseroles & curries)!. Chickpeas work in just about anything with mixed veg in: protein high, good for cholesterol, available in tins so no need to soak & very cheap (here anyway)
Tofu is protein-packed!. Very bland on its own though - spice up with chinese / stir fries!.
For breakfast I usually have muesli & yogurt mixed half & half with milk!. You can get low-fat yogurt & I suppose you could have any grain / oat based cereal if you don't like muesli!. A banana at morning tea break time is also good!.
There's lots of info & recipes on the Vegetarian Society website:
http://www!.vegsoc!.org/
If you type key words in the search box it comes up with info sheets / articles!. You don't have to be a member but I'm sure they'd appreciate it if you joined! I'm pretty sure they're worldwide, not just UK!.
Here's a link to their info sheet about protein generally: http://www!.vegsoc!.org/info/protein!.html
Those are just a few suggestions which I hope are of some help - I'm sure you'll get lots more answers!. Good luck,

You need to look at calories for some of these things, people have listed a lot of good protein sources for you!. Refried beans are high in calories, and would be counterproductive, try substituting them with seasoned red or black beans depending on your preference!. Nuts are great, particularly in small amounts to hold you over between meals, but once again, watch the calories!. Load up on veggies to go with your proteins, as they will fill you without too many calories, and they will provide a lot of nutrients!. The biggest thing for most vegetarians is cutting back on white flour, sugar, and excess carbs!. Robin Robertson wrote a low carb vegetarian cookbook that I would recommend!. Has the calorie counts, and really tasty recipes!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Eggs are often thought of as being perfect sources of protein!. They aren't very fatty and most of the fat they do have are the good kinds, so you shouldn't be too worried about that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Beans, They have a lot of varieties!. Try to stay away from the refried beans though!.
They also have protein bars at your local health food store!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
