Is there such a thing as "Semi-Vegetarian"?!

Question: Is there such a thing as "Semi-Vegetarian"!?
Seriously, my friend she tried being a vegetarian and the week she stopped eating meat she lost a whole bunch of weight and got sick- so now she says she only eats birds, and that she is a semi-vegetarian!. Honestly, I do not think there is such thing- either you are or you're not!. I do not think you can have the best of both worlds- eat meat and call yourself a vegetarian!. My other friend said that you can be semi-veg if you don't eat a lot of meat, but I still disagree!. What do you think!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Your friend is correct!. There are actually many different ways to be a vegetarian!.

? Lacto-vegetarian = vegetarian diet which includes dairy products such as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and cream, but excludes eggs!.

? Lacto-ovo-vegetarian = vegetarian diet that doesn't include beef, pork, poultry, fish, shellfish or animal flesh of any kind, but allows dairy and egg products!.

? Partial vegetarian, semivegetarian= vegetarian diet that is the same as the above two diets, but also includes the occasional chicken, fish, and red meat!.

So your friend is correct, she can still be considered a semivegetarian!.

birds are meat!. chicken is considered poultry, but still meat!.
you cant eat meat, no matter what amount, and still be a vegetarian!.
STRICTLY vegetables, and no meat whatsoever!.
tell your friends they can't be vegetarians, or even semi vegetarians if they eat any meat!.
its good she stopped eating meat, but she still is considered one!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

yes !.!.!. as far a a definition and such !.!.!. who cares !.!.!.

I know many vegetarians who eat meat once in a blue moon !.!.!. it depends on their reasons for going veggie, too !.!.!.

for example !.!.!. one friend went veggie b/c she kept getting cuts of bad meat !.!.!. she is still up for an occasional filet minion or fish *fresh* on the coast, but she avoids the rest !.!.!.

another avoids it b/c she is trying to cut down on fat !.!.!. i think beans and coconut milk are awful for losing weight, so I totally didn't get it !.!.!. and then i realized i hate burgers and hot dogs and don't eat fried chicken - the meat *i* eat isn't fatty at all !.!.!. cutting meat out would almost double my daily caloric intake in an attempt to keep my protein up - so that took a bit for me to understand and be supportive of !.!.!.

so it really depends on what you are trying to do and what your reasons and habits are !.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't understand the whole fad thing of calling yourself vegetarian!. I'm not into labels, but there just ARE certain labels!. Vegetarians TEND (not always) to be concerned about eating animals and taking a life!. Obviously your friend is not!. So why are they pretending!? If you don't eat a lot of meat !.!.!. you're still eating meat!. They are just going to look foolish by calling themselves that!. I'm sure she ate the worst possible vegetarian foods if she lost a lot of weight!. Or she's being dramatic !.!.!. I'll go with that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i don't really believe in labelling different types of vegetarians, but for a while I was a semi veg, or another name would be "weekend carnivore" since I was transitioning to a vegetarian!. I think some people can get very anal about what kind of veg heads exist!. I guess it's a way to instantly determine what diet they do follow!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Your friend is what is called a Pollo-Vegetarian!. They eat poultry, such as chicken, turkey, and duck!.

See http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Pollotarian!.!.!. for more info

She is not a vegetarian!. She is simply a person that limits what types of animals she will eat!.

Vegetarians do not eat any animals
Vegans do not eat any animals or animal by productsWww@FoodAQ@Com

People have different definitions for different things; there isn't an agreement on that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yeah, it's just another name for omnivore though!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That's called only eating poultry!.

Either you eat meat or you don't!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Is there such a thing as a semi-vegetarian!? Well, yes and no!. It is a term that is used for people who occasionally eat meat (though usually not red meat), but not often!. I've seen it used in a cookbook before, as well as some other books and Web sites!. The term does actually exist!.

However, you are also right!. "Semi-vegetarian" is considered a very trendy, unnecessary term by many people (especially actual vegetarians)-- one that people just don't really need to use!. When would a person need to explain that they are a semi-vegetarian, rather than just say that they don't eat red meat!? Most people don't know what a vegetarian or vegan does or doesn't eat anyway, let alone a "semi-vegetarian!." Basically, it's putting a trendy label on a diet that doesn't need a label!.

You are also correct in stating that a person either is or is not a vegetarian!. There are different types of vegetarians (lacto-ovo, lacto, vegan) but the one thing they have in common is that they do not eat flesh!. That means that pescetarians (eat fish but no other meat), pollotarians (eat chicken but no other meat) and semi-vegetarians are not vegetarians at all!. It tends to really annoy actual vegetarians when people following these diets call themselves vegetarians, because they are not!.

By the way, while I do applaud your friend's efforts in changing to a vegetarian diet, the fact that she got sick and, really, that she is now using the semi-vegetarian term, tells me that she didn't do her research!. Healthy vegetarian diets do take planning!. Probably what happened is that she just took out the meat (likely the main part of her meals previously) and didn't replace it with comparable nutrients!. If she is serious about wanting to become a vegetarian, she needs to do her research! Www@FoodAQ@Com

Sigh, so we have another "junk-food" vegetarian!.
Your friend shouldn't have lost drastic amounts of weight, or should she have felt ill at all if she had done the tiniest bit of research on how to eat a balanced vegetarian diet!.
Was she eating:
3-5 serves of different colored veggies a day!?
2-4 serves of fruit a day!?
6-11 serves of whole grains a day(sounds like lots but a serve isn't that big)!?
2-3 serves of dairy or dairy supplement a day!?
2-3 serves of beans and legumes a day!?
I bet not, I bet she just ate a whole lot of crap like potato chips, and called herself a vegetarian!.
AND she is NOT a vegetarian, she is a pollo-vegetarian!.
lacto-ovo-vegetarian: no meat BUT dairy and egg products
lacto vegetarian: no meat or eggs but dairy
ovo-vegetarian: no meat or dairy but egg
pesco-vegetarian (pescatarian): no red meat or poultry but fish, dairy and egg
pollo-vegetarian(pollotarian): no red meat or fish but but poultry dairy and egg!.
vegan: NO animals or animal product!.
You can mix and match as you will, but I just think your friend is unhealthy and is looking for a label!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well I was taught that vegetarians sometimes eat meat and that vegans are the full blown deal!. so yea I guess that there is a semi-vegetarian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
