Why is my family giving me a hard time because i decided to become a vegetarian?!
i am 17 and have been a vegetarian for 3 days (which is not very long, but i plan to continue)!. anyways, my family (dad and sister, my mom leaves me alone) is giving me a hard time!. i am not really an "animal" person and so my sister says, if you don't like animals and don't want to work with animals then why are you a vegetarian!. i said, its not about that, its cause i don't want to eat them!. and i said that i think it is wrong to kill animals!. and when my dad asked why i was going veggie and i said for moral reasons, he laughed at me!. why are they giving me all this!? i'm not doing anything wrong!Www@FoodAQ@Com

They could not accept that something they had done for the whole of their life is wrong!. Therefore, they compensate this by making you think you are the weird one instead!. Just continue doing what you know is right!. There are so many evidences that you can find easily on the internet that shows why we should be vegetarians!. Quote them and hopefully they will accept your decisions!. :)
Good luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, because they still eat animals and 3 days ago so did you!. Now you think what you did and they are still doing is wrong!. Can you understand how this will be difficult for them to understand at first!? You are saying indirectly that their actions are morally wrong and this makes them uncomfortable!. You aren't doing anything wrong, and they don't think they are either!. Over time they will accept your choice though they may still tease you!. Good luck at Thanksgiving!Www@FoodAQ@Com
Sometimes it's hard for people to accept different ideas, and at the same time it's easy to give your family a hard time because "hey, they're family!" They probably don't realize how much it hurts you!. Sometime, talk to them seriously about your decision and how much it means to you!. Hopefully they will understand and support you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
We all go through this, love!.
What you're "doing wrong" is Doing Right - and that always attracts bullies!.
These sad people are actually giving you your first lesson in standing up for your principles - tell 'em you'll always be grateful!
As the old hymn puts it: -
"Whoso besets him round with dismal stories
Do but themselves confound - his strength the more is!"
Look on the Vegetarian Society website for ideas and support!.

These are questions you should ask them!. Typically, I put up with a lot of jokes and ribbing because that's what people like to do, and I'm a jokey person!. But damn, enough is ENOUGH and you don't have to put up with it, especially from your family!.
Sister: "But you're not even an animal person!. Why do you want to be a vegetarian!?"
You: "Well, if I don't like working with my boss, does that mean that I should be able to kill and eat her!?"
Dad: "Why are you going vegetarian!?"
You: "Moral reasons!."
Dad: "Hahahahahaha!"
You: "Yeah, because it's so damn HILARIOUS to not want to contribute to the inhumane slaughter of animals, right!? What if I told you that I'm doing it for hygiene reasons!? You know, since all the animals that are slaughtered wallow in their own sh*t, eat sh*t, have open wounds and CANCER but are still labeled as 'Grade A beef,' and the untreated sores on a cow's udders mean that delicious pus gets into milk!. Maybe I should laugh at you for eating cancerous tumors in your ground beef!."
Or, you can just say what you said here: "Why are you guys giving me all this!? I'm not doing anything wrong!"Www@FoodAQ@Com

This is a 'life choice' you have made for YOUR life, it's no-ones business but yours!. Why let them get to you!? It's a great decision, it's just that it's out of the ordinary for them!. I have been a vego for 20 years, hardly ever catch cold or get sick and have never looked back!. Just make sure you eat wisely and replace the minerals and vitamins you need, with other foods, don't just take out meat and leave the rest of the diet the same!. Your family will get used to it but even after 20 years my Mum still stresses when I come to stay about what to feed me, and you still get the digs from guys "So, you don't eat meat, hey!?!? Wink wink, nudge, nudge!! Morons! Anyway, good luck, remember this is YOUR life to do with what you will, and you have the right to decide what is best for you!!Www@FoodAQ@Com
too bad others keep saying "ignore them" forgetting that they are family and one cannot and should not really ignore family!. And isolating yourself won't really solve anything!.
Have a sit down with your parents and tell them exactly how you feel!. Since your mom doesn't seem to have an opinion about it, it would help to get her on your side!. Don't give them a lecture about "the animals this or the animals that"!. Just be factual as to why you think being a vegetarian is the best thing for you!. If it would help, do some nutrition research to back you up!. Tell them you will help around the kitchen so it won't be an extra effort for whoever does the cooking!. Better yet, cook something every bow and then that everyone can enjoy!. That it won't really cost anything extra (and it shouldn't)!. Be serious, mature and factual!. Don't ever be hysterical!.
Unfortunately, you are still a minor living at home so your options are pretty much in the hands of your parents!. But it is not impossible if you approach it in an intelligent manner!. And if by chance, they still say no, then at least you tried!.
As for your sister, she'll probably come around when your Dad approves

I deal with the same thing!. I'm a vegan kind of well raw too but that's besides the point!. You probably make them feel guilty!. Of course you know that today not only are they killed but have horrible conditions!. You should just know that you are doing the right thing and that's all that matters!. Good for you!. also, you should try rice milk!. If you eat eggs you should know they have really bad conditions too!. I also do not suggest a lot of soy because it can cause some people to gain weight!. Anyway, ask your family if they care about animals and if they say yes show them some videos of how they are treated!. If they still don't care just tell them it's your choice and they should act like adults and accept your choice!. They are the ones that are wrong!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
The best angle is to state you are doing this for health reasons!. There are vast amounts of books and websites extolling the biological benefits of eating a diet without meat!.
Get some statistics together that show a correlation of meat-eating societies and the higher incidence of diseases such as cancers, liver disease, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, etc!. There's probably a few vegetarian and vegan foundations out there that have these figures already compiled and ready to print!. All you have to do is find them, print them, and leave them where your family can read them!.
Almost everyone has some sort of "family history of a particular disease"!.!.!.just state that you don't want to become another statistic in relation to whatever disease it is that runs in your family and that a vegetarian diet is part of your plan to avoid this problem!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Ever hear the expression "The nail that sticks out, gets hammered!."!?
First off, it sounds as though you are letting them get to you!. You know WHY they are continuing to do it!.!.!. BECAUSE THEY KNOW IT GETS TO YOU AND ARE USING IT AS A FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT!. *Ever wonder why people intentionally do stupid stuff, because they find the reaction in some way humerous/enjoyable/ect!.*
Honestly, I wouldn't really care what they thought about you being a vegetarian (I'm not vegetarian!.!. so I don't have this problem!.!. but I would still treat it the same way) and just live how you want to live!.
also: DON'T LET THEM KNOW THEY GET TO YOU! This only creates a "game" per se for them to "play"Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hi, im 17 and vegan!. I started off vegetarian at the beginning of the year and slowly moved to being vegan, which i've been for 2 months!. I had to go through exactly what your getting now!. My dad was the worst!. He would make subtle smart *** comments like, "would you like some egg custard!.!.!.there's no meat in it"!.!. Everyone knows there's no meat in custard the asshole!.!.!. Anyway, i've realised that there's going to be a lot of people who don't understand or are simply ***'s who you're going to want to punch square in the nose, but you have to remember what a great thing your doing!. Do some research and explain to them calmly why you don't want to eat them if it's for cruelty reasons (like me), such as, animals are sentient beings meaning they feel pain, fear, anxiety, depression, despair too just like us humans!. For me, it is like eating my dog, because she is an animal too(people do eat dogs and cats in China, and skin them alive every single day, it's horrific)!. Videos of where meat comes from is eye-opening and terrible to watch but it happens every minute, you can find them in youtube!. also, what i do is, don't say it's wrong, even though it is!. Say to them, i'm not forcing you to do the same thing, i'm not making fun of you, respect my choice of lifestyle (because after all, it is your life) The food you consume doesn't effect them, at least it shouldn't!.
(oh god, i'm dreading my first christmas where my whole family makes fun of me when they find out and interrogate me about my choice, i know i'll snap lol!.)
Good Luck, stay strong, your saving animals, water and the environment!. =]Www@FoodAQ@Com
