I think I want to be a vegetarian?!

Question: I think I want to be a vegetarian!?
I've been thinking about vegetarianism a lot!. In fact I want to check out a book by a philosopher named Peter Singer!. He says most people(except hunter gather tribes) can live vegetarian life styles!. A few minutes ago I was talking to my mom about trying to get healthier and when I told her maybe we should try vegetarianism the first thing she said was "you need to see how these vegetarians are after 40"!. Where can I find research on vegetarians and the long term effects!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

As Barbara said, there are plenty of omnivores over 40 that have high blood pressure, diabetes, and a slew of other medical conditions directly related to their meat-heavy lifestyle!. I love how people will jump down someone's throat for mentioning vegetarianism or veganism, yet they will completely ignore that omnivores are not automatically healthy just because they eat meat!

If it were unhealthy, do you think the Mayo Clinic (http://www!.mayoclinic!.com/health/vegetar!.!.!. ) would recommend it!? The American Heart Association says this: "Many studies have shown that vegetarians seem to have a lower risk of obesity, coronary heart disease (which causes heart attack), high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus and some forms of cancer!." (Source: http://www!.americanheart!.org/presenter!.j!.!.!. )

Many diets of various peoples are heavily, if not completely, vegetarian!. I recently watched a documentary saying that China was widely vegetarian until the 1950's, when meat became more widely available!. These are people with long life spans back in a time where Europe was getting married at 12 because they expected to die at 25!.

As long as you don't just rely on carrots and lettuce for your nutrition (aka, eat a wide variety of foods), then there's nothing to worry about!.

And let's not forget Vegan Society founder Donald Watson, who lived to be 95 years old: http://www!.foodsforlife!.org!.uk/people/Do!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well you can be healthy whether you are a vegetarian or not, the key is a wide variety of healthy foods and plants!. If you want to become a vegetarian you will have to eat a specially varied diet and defiantely do you research on nutrition before starting!. You will also have to cut down on starch consumption and increase your plant food consumption!. I'm a vegetarian and it requires a lot of planning and you can't be lazy! If you are doing it for ethical reasons its a good choice!. If for health reasons, you may as well just cut down on your meat intake, and eat more greens and fruits!. You don't have to become a vegetarian to have an ethical impact either!. Just buy less meat/dairy and consume less, or if you do buy meat, dairy and eggs, buy free range and no hormones added (organic)!. And you are already doing something for animals and the environment!. Plus organic meat is healthier!.

If you are still considering becoming a vegetarian I would recommend eating as many varied fresh vegetables and fruits as possible!. You will also need lots of beans, legumes and other protein sources!. You have to make sure you are getting the required nutrition and it will be difficult at first, so be sure to research the information and find out the specific nutrients you need!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There's a good summary of peer-reviewed studies on the longevity of vegetarians here - 4 out of the 6 major studies show longer life for vegetarians!.

You can also read about this study showing that the less animal protein you eat, the more fertile you are:

On a more personal note, my sister in law and brother have both been veg since about age twenty - they're 39 and 40 now - and they're quite healthy!. A little chubby from overindulging, maybe, but thinner than most Brits!.

I'm an over-60s vegetarian, and I'm quite healthy - check out the Vegetarian Society website, anyway!.
Yes, I know a nut allergy is a bigger problem on a veggie diet - but we also eat free-range eggs and vegetarian cheese (without animal rennet)!.
A vegan diet excludes all animal products, but gets its protein from beans and whole grains as well as nuts!. There are a load of meat substitutes on the market - just look round!.
And lots of vegans are quite happily drawing the pension!.
Air force cadets!? Sorry, but - IMO - Meg's sister is being trained to kill, or at least to support killers, so they will want her to eat meat! And NO vegetarian eats "a little amount of meat"! We don't eat ANY!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Type "vegetarian diet" into a search engine!. also, I know a lot of over 40 vegetarians who are very healthy!. I also know a lot of over 40 omnivores who are not!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Indians are mostly vegetarian and they r quite healthy!.!.!.!.I'm vegetarian and still healthy Www@FoodAQ@Com

Now onwards u want to eat vegetarian its a good idea to ur health!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

not having meat isn't very good for your growth!. maybe just don't eat red meat, and don't eat veal, definitely don't eat veal!. If you're alergic to nuts then you can't become a vegetarian coz that's the only other real source of protein!. My sister goes to airforce cadets!. There is a girl that, as a deal so that she could join, must eat white meat once every day at camps!. Meat is a part of a balanced diet!. You've just got to accept the fact that eating meat is a part of life!. If this is about being healthy then stick with grilled chicken, fresh!. Stay away from crumbed, fried and battered stuff!. And kebabs with loads of sauce too!. To be a vegetarian just eat more vegetables and a little amount of meat!. And exercise!. Hope I helped :)Www@FoodAQ@Com
