I am confused about soy. Can anyone give me non-biased FACTS?!
I have just watched this video:

'The Truth About Soy"
I am confused!. Are there any nutriotionalists here who can tell me straight, without any vegan/vegetarian biases, whether this information about soy is really true!?
Or is it a conspiracy, propaganda put forth by the dairy industry!?
--------------------------------------!.!.!.
Dr!. Sherrill Sellman uncovers the myths of soy!. She explains that the food is not as nutritional as many consumers believe!.
Apparently, soy is marketed as a 'health' food but in actual fact there are many health problems associated with eating soy!.
1!. Soy is one of the top allergens, creating a range of inflammatory conditions
2!. Soy is cross-reactive with wheat
3!. Soy interferes with thyroid function (called 'goitergenic') and will block the action of your thyroid!. This will lead to hyperthyroidism ('sluggish thyroid')
4!. Soy increases the body's need for vitamin D, so you have to take more vitamin D
5!. It is a very inefficient form of b12 - it will not supply the body's requirements for b12!.
6!. Soy is also a tripsin inhibitor - it will block the absorption of proteins and interfere with the function of the pancreas
7!. Soy also blocks the absorption of key minerals - including calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron
"The Asians are NOT healthier people because they eat soy - soy is NOT a staple in Asia!. The Chinese eat an average of 2 teaspoons of soy per day, and the Japanese maybe 2 tablespoons of soy per day!. And the kind of soy that these people eat is basically a fermented form!."
Soy came from Asia but it was never considered a very nutritional food!. It was only when they learned to FERMENT it, in the form of miso by the Japanese particularly, and nato, that they were able to make it DIGESTIBLE!.
Up until that point, it was only used in times of famine when they had nothing else!. They would never eat the soybean!.
It was more used to put nitrogen into the soil!.
So the best and only recommended way to eat soy is in the fermented form!.
Four tablespoons per day (eg!. a glass of soymilk) is enough soy to have an effect on your thyroid!.
Soy is very estrogenic!.
It is a terrible food to give to children!. Soy infant formulas are bad because it is the equivalent of giving a baby 5 birth control pills per day (due to the amount of estrogen)!.
There would be 13,000 to 22,000 times more estrogen in a baby's body if they were to take soy formula instead of milk formula!. And that can lead to conditions later in life such as a growing problem of early puberty (one out of six eight-year olds going into puberty)!. Consuming soy formula in infancy can create reproductive abnormalities for the rest of their lives!.
If you consume soy, it is nutritious only as a fermented food!. Tofu is not fermented, but tempeh, miso and natto are!.
Any other form of soy should be used only judiciously!.
also - the major grower and distributor of soy in the USA tried to get the government to give it a GRAS labeling (Generally Recognized As Safe), but when all the literature and science was presented, that request was denied!. So it is not recognized as a GRAS product - which should be telling us something quite important about the effects of soy on our health!."

Answers:
I think this article doesn't ring true because it's a very hardcore "SOY IS BAD" article!. If it were a fair, scientific article, it would focus on a study showing one aspect (for example, "soy found to have an affect on thyroid")!. The fact that it goes overboard listing every possible way soy could be bad demonstrates that the article was trying to make soy sound as bad as possible!. For example, the first thing listed is, "Soy is one of the top allergens!." That doesn't make soy bad; it only makes soy bad if you're allergic to it!. Peanuts, milk, and eggs are also top allergens; does that make them bad!? No!. It just means that people who are allergic to them should avoid them!.
also, she described hyperthyroidism as "sluggish thyroid"!. Actually, hyperthyroidism is when your thyroid is OVERACTIVE!. "Sluggish thyroid", or your thyroid gland not working enough, is hypothyroid!. Any doctor (not to mention 10th grade biology student) could tell you this!. This little mistake makes me question how much of a "doctor" this woman truly is!.
In general, I'd be wary of any source that either claims something is all good ("soy's a miracle food! It fights aging and cures breast cancer!") or all bad ("soy will kill you! it's an allergen and will give you breast cancer!")Www@FoodAQ@Com

If I can just add my 20 year personal study;
My kids are vegan and have had soy their whole lives!. They are not sick never have been sick, the doctor on check ups told us to leave and never come back!.
This next bit comes from the link below,
It is unlikely that you can "overdose" on estrogen by adding soy products to your diet!. Soy is a good source of phytoestrogens, estrogen-like compounds from plants!. Phytoestrogens are not estrogen; in some ways and in some tissues of the body, they act like estrogen (decreasing hot flashes and lowering total cholesterol, for example), but in other areas, they act the opposite way (in the breast, perhaps, which may lower risk of breast cancer)!.

There may have been truth in what she said, but I seriously doubt it's that dramatic or dangerous!. Lots of people eat it!.
It may cause you to have a higher risk of one of those health problems she named, but it's not like if you eat a bit you're gonna get really sick!.
I wouldn't pay too much attention to it, just be aware of what she said when you eat it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

soy is not milk!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Soy is neither healthy or natural!. Some people will point to oriental countries like Japan as having a large soy consumption, although it is true that these countries consume large amounts of soy as a whole, the individual does not have very much at all!. Most people from Japan and other oriental countries rely on EGGS, not soy for protein and sustenance!.
Here are a couple of facts for you:
Myth: Soy estrogens (isoflavones) are good for you!.
Truth: Soy isoflavones are phyto-endocrine disrupters!. At dietary levels, they can prevent ovulation and stimulate the growth of cancer cells!. Eating as little as 30 grams (about 4 tablespoons) of soy per day can result in hypothyroidism with symptoms of lethargy, constipation, weight gain and fatigue!.
Myth: Soy foods are safe and beneficial for women to use in their postmenopausal years!.
Truth: Soy foods can stimulate the growth of estrogen-dependent tumors and cause thyroid problems!. Low thyroid function is associated with difficulties in menopause!.
Consumption of unfermented soy products is probably not such a good idea!. Unfermented soy contains high levels of a number of compounds that can: block the absorption of calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc; stunt growth; and alter hormone levels, disrupting menstruation, lowering testosterone, increasing the risk of breast cancer, and causing thyroid and prostate complications!. Unfermented soy includes things like soy milk, soy burgers, soy hot dogs, and tofu!.
Sorry!.!.!.!.sounds like your dad is correct!
