Is Thanksgiving traumatic?!
It's not so bad for me since I don't live with my parents anymore, but I used to HATE Thanksgiving! Every year my family would all get together and tell me how deviant and stupid I am for not eating turkey and meat, and bake a huge dead smelly bird in the oven, and try to get me to eat it!.!.!.and it made me a very very sad vegetarian!. Wondering if other vegetarians go through this with their families!? =(Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hi! I'm vegan too!. Happy Thanksgiving!. It's not a real popular holiday with many native Americans either!. You should try going to a vegan potluck Thanksgiving dinner one year!.!.!. sometimes called "Thanksliving!." It's a good way to meet other vegans/vegetarians, and get some recipe ideas!. I usually handled family Thanksgiving by making a couple great vegetarian dishes that I can eat and share with everyone!. Pick something with mainstream flavors, that's delicious that everyone will like-- not something funky that will turn people off to your ideas (like Tofu Pimiento Olive Surprise Casserole :-| or something )!.
I know how you feel with the turkey and other animals!. The best thing you can do if you're with family is have a thick skin, laugh it off, keep cool and keep peace in your family on that one day!. That's the way they do Thanksgiving, however disgusting it is to us, and probably the way you started out in life doing things along with them!. The world is not perfect!. You're outnumbered and you're not going to change anything on this one day by getting upset!. (You can email them information later :-P)
Being laughed at and made fun of is part of the experience of being a vegan/vegetarian because you're in the minority at the moment!. You will find that many comments on this page are just as nasty!. That says more about them than you!. I probably would have laughed at you years ago before I had my own epiphany about the horrific ways we treat animals on industrial farms-- and most other places!. You are certainly not alone as a veg!. in your experiences with family Thanksgiving!.!.!. I've had my share of family members cracking jokes or making dumb comments!. Some of them from my sister --who later went vegetarian ;) (got even by telling her in graphic detail how hot dogs are made!. Then I took her to meet some of the animals she had never seen up close and alive before-- something many people have never done)!.
Vegetarianism is certainly not stupid-- Albert Einstein was a vegetarian, as were/are many extraordinary people!. There are millions and millions of us in this country alone!. Even the United Nations reports that raising animals as livestock accounts for more global warming gases than all the cars, trucks, airplanes, and every other form of transport combined!. You are wonderful for making living beings more important than the taste of their flesh, and you have nothing to feel bad about because you are light years ahead of many people who just don't give a crap about animals, about our environment, about the tens of thousands of kids who die around the world each week, and about their own health!. All of which benefit by a vegetarian/ vegan lifestyle!.
Most good ideas go through a process that isn't always pleasant!. Remember the quote from Arthur Schopenhauer-- "All truth passes through three stages!. First, it is ridiculed!. Second, it is violently opposed!. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident!." I would rather be criticized than ignored!. Being criticized means we're making progress!. (and so does the surprising rate of increase in vegetarians in recent years, thanks partly to the internet)!. It is either the way of the future for most people- or this planet will die, because it cannot sustain both an exploding overpopulation of people and an overpopulation of animals to feed those human beings-- animals which drink water, eat crops, take up land, and produce many times much more waste than we do!. Most people will not be vegan in our lifetime, but people die and new people come!. Ideas live on, and grow!. Until then, enjoy your life! Keep a thick skin, get involved, don't fear criticism, and live by your beliefs with your head held high!. But most of all, don't let people who like to be jerks ruin your day-- on Thanksgiving or any other day!. Many other people will be understanding and interested elsewhere!. :-DWww@FoodAQ@Com

No it hasn't been traumatic for me, well last year there was literally nothing for me to eat except rolls! That sucked cause I was hungry, they had put meat in everything they made!. I was not expecting that, I thought I would at least get some potatoes, but nope, they had bacon in them!.
Don't listen to these losers who answered this question rudely!. Some of them have nothing better to do in life than to come to a section that has nothing to do with their own lives and pick on others!. It is kinda sad really!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Not really, anymore!. I have been vegetarian for 17 years so I have learned to deal with all of the horrible things this "holiday" represents!. Most members of my family still believe in the slaughter of turkeys at Thanksgiving, and have tried to get me to eat meat, despite the fact that they know I made the decision to avoid animal flesh a long time ago!.

I've been a vegetarian for 11 years and my mom was always very supportive of it, especially around Thanksgiving!.!.!. she always prepared many vegetarian side dishes!. A couple of years ago she even bought me a tofurky!. Even though I haven't lived with her in years, she still brings me a veggie tray to our dinner!.
And now, my boyfriends family is also supportive in the same way!. His grandpa started making a delicious big salad for the dinner, and he usually makes one anytime we come over!.!.!. it's so good!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Come to my parents house for the best eclectic Thanksgiving that's ever been!. You should try my sisters' pink sh**!. It's whole cranberries chopped up with horseradish and nuts!.
So what if you're a veg!. I was once and my family dealt with it!. They also don't like my tatoos and the way all the children act!. That's just being a family!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

all they would do is always ask me if i wanted meat (which does get annoying since they did this like every day)

Your house, your call!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
You call what your parents and everybody else is enjoying a "dead smelly bird" and your the one complaining!? Maybe they are just as happy as you are that your not home for thanksgiving anymore!. Now they can eat in peace and you can enjoy whatever it is that you eat!.
Too much ado over one meal one day of the year (that's at least 1095 meals possibly more) That's traumatic!? Are you gonna starve to death if you don't eat a Thanksgiving dinner!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
