Can vegan diets be unhealthy?!

Question: Can vegan diets be unhealthy!?
And if so, how!?
I just don't get it personally when you have limited yourself in such a way I would think it would be hard to be unhealthy but apparently it has been done!.
So, does anyone know if this is possible!?
Thanks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Yes I've seen many!. If we don't include fruit and vegetables, we cannot be healthy!

Edit: Sparkle: Sister or not, I am a strict vegan and so is my family, and we are very healthy!. We don't have any deficiencies, and just because you work for a meat loving nutritionist doesn't mean you know it all!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Some vegans don't eat a healthy diet!. A diet of French fries and Cheerios with soy milk is not healthy (although it is vegan)!.

also, new studies have been done on B12 deficiency!. Lots of vegan rely on nutritional yeast for their B12!. It has been shown through some studies that the type of B12 in yeast is not the same as the B12 found in meat!. Further more, the B12 found in meat is the kind that the human body uses, while the other type of B12 is not used by the human body!.

The type of B12 found in meat cannot be synthesized in a lab!. If a vegan wants to find this type of B12 in a supplement, it must come from an animal source!.

B12 deficiency does not manifest itself for a long time!. Life long vegans may not show symptoms of B12 deficiency until their 60's, 70's, or 80's!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Any unplanned diet can be unhealthy!. Everyone should be aware of their nutritional requirements, not just vegans!.

Vegan diets are unhealthy if you don't take time to think about where you get your nutrients!. The only nutrient that is not readily available in a vegan diet is B12, but vegans get this from fortified foods and / or a supplement!.

However a vegan diet is nutritionally adequate for all age ranges provided it is balanced properly!.

[edit] Pulses and lentils are a good source of vegan protein!. Try eating more beans and peas!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegans can be unhealthy, yes you are right, but there are some tricks!.

As long as you get enough fruit and vegetables you will get all the nutrients you need!.

You'll get vitamin, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes, these are all really important for yor health!.

Never ever worry about protein or calcium or iron for that matter, because they are all found in the fruit and veggies!.

Protein is needed to build tissues, unless you are a baby then you don't need that much!. Btw, human breast milk is 5% protein, oranges are 8%!. Lentils, beans and peas are 24%!.!.!.I would stick to fruit!.

You can see how high protein foods can become a luxury!. Too much protein in the human body is not good!. Acidity in the blood is the start to most diseases!. eat fruit and vegetables and you'll be alkaline!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

yea u do miss alot and b12 u miss out also and protein but if u drink soy milk soy yogurt u eat and tofu and soy nuts then ur fine but u need to consume enough in a day I am not vegan because I eat eggs for protein cheese and nuts which are good but my sister used to be then switched back to vegetarian when she was vegan for a year and vegetarian for longer but vegan the food options are limited even vegan things like bock burgers u can't have as vegan Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you are mostly eating pasta and soy products, you can definitely be unhealthy!. Stay away from those soy products (boca burgers, soydogs, etc!.) and eat a LOT of greens, and other veggies!. Greens are FULL of protein! A good way to get your greens is a green smoothie http://www!.youtube!.com/watch!?v=JpV6kQ9l8!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Body's all need a certain amount of nutrients and vitamins, limiting your diet to vegan sometimes hinders the intake of important nutrients such as proteins or may make you consume too much of one thing and not enough of others!. Every way of eating can be unhealthy if it is not balanced and nutricious :]Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes it can!. If you don't get enough of the nutrients you need it can be!.

Try eating more seeds, nuts, herbs, spices, hemp, legumes, etc!.!. you get the idea!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Any diet can be unhealthy!. I always refer to the vegan who lives on fruit juice and pastry!. Others I have seen eat a lot of nut butters which are high in fat with jelly or jam which is high in sugar!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Sure!. You could have a diet consisting of potato chips, malt liquor, and Ho-Ho's, and though it would be vegan it wouldn't exactly be healthy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

cant possibly be healthy,no variety,or diversity, and most definately lacking in protien, no matter what hardened vegans may say to the contrary!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it CAN be
But it dosnt have to be
