Why would a loved one be upset at your choice to become a vegetarian?!

Question: Why would a loved one be upset at your choice to become a vegetarian!?
Whether you eat meat or do not

What possible reason could a loved one (family, boyfriend/girlfriend, etc) have to be bothered by your personal choice to become a vegetarian!? Especially if the choice did not effect them personally (cooking, shopping, going out to eat, etc)!?

I need to put someone at ease about my choice and they seemed bothered by the decision!. I'm not doing this for animal rights either, it's for health reasons!. I just want to eat healthier!. So why be upset!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

When you eat differently than the rest of your family and friends, it's a definite social rift!. You are rocking the boat, and they are still in it!. Food choice is so tied up in family culture!. Even though you may be completely responsible for your own meals, they only see that you are choosing to separate yourself from what was once copasetic (sp!?)!. It may also be causing them to examine their own eating habits, and that can lead to self-criticism that they are not ready for!.

I would try to get to the bottom of this person's objection, and then, if you can, move slowly into vegetrianism - a gradual approach is best for most people, anyway, for a properly balanced veggie diet is quite different than just eliminating meat and animal products!.

I was a vegetarian for about 15 years, then gradually shifted back to omnivore about 10 years ago!. My spouse was quite upset recently when I told him I was thinking about eliminating red meat completely!. He feels this will cut into his enjoyment of a good steak, which it probably will, even though it's not logical!. There's so much emotion surrounding this!. We have a right to eat as we choose, but the family situation needs to be handled "delicately", as the Wicked Witch of the West would say!.

Are you sure that you are not reading something more into this than what it actually is!? I cannot see any reason why som-one would begrudge you for your eating habits whether it's eating healthy or not!.!.!.My girlfriend decided to become a vegeterian and I was happy for her but it was the "ATTITUDE" that she adapted with her choice of becoming "MEAT FREE" that bothered not only me but others as well!.!.!.!.She just bragged and boasted about being a vegeterian so much that it was totally annoying because in her mind she was living healthier therefore making her better than her friends!. But you know what!? THE HEFFA is eating meat again and now she has dropped that superiority "thing" that she once had, making her a more likable person now!.!.!.!.Please look within yourself to make sure that you are not the one who is causing your friend to be bothered!.!.!.!.Just my suggestion!.!.!.!.Thanks for allowing me to answer!.!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it can be very dangerous to your health if you become a vegetarian and don't eat the proper vitamin's and stuff that your body needs!.!.!. you need to be careful and make sure your eating enough starches/vitamins/etc!.!.!. that's probably why it bothers them!. or maybe they just don't agree with that choice of lifestyle!?!? It happens, and there's nothing you can do about it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I truly have no idea, and most people here will have no idea!. The only person who has the answer is the family member who is upset!.

I think the main idea might be because they dont understand!. If they were always in a meat eating enivorment, the idea of becoming a vegetarian is new!.

So just need to explain ur reasons for becoming a vegetarian and maybe make a wonderful veg dish to show them!.!.!.

Best of luckWww@FoodAQ@Com

No!. One will ever understand the path you chose!. When i wanted to no one belived me!. But if they did they would wonder why bevause they care about me!. with out meat they thought that i would grow weak and unhealthy!. That is they same way they feel for you!. The care about you!. they all love you!. They don't want you to grow weak!. Grow unhealthy, and to not even opena door!. but they soon will get used to the idea and love you and care for you like they did before you made that choice!. give it time!. They could have been just shocked by the idea!. Don't worry!. It will grow on them!. Just as long as you are happy they should be happy too!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

dude, the first time i told my family i was going vego, my grandmother thought i was doing it on purpose to hurt her and that i was disobeying her!.

honestly, it's just a generation gap!. people can't get away from traditonal thinking!. your family has probably had the idea brainwashed into their heads that eating meat is normal and anything different aint!.

try talking to them, and tell them why you've decided to become vego!. theyll lighten up

I don't understand why anyone would be upset unless they thought you would end up becoming malnourished!. If one of my daughters decided to do that, I would buy them a well rounded vegetarian cookbook and talk to them about getting plenty of nutrition (like how to prevent iron, B-12 deficiency, etc)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

hmmm are you making a big deal of this new choice!?
that can be really annoying to some people
did you make an announcement sort of
"i dont eat meat anymore" sort of thing!?
cause thats really a negative
there is no reason to tell any one
so dont talk about it and you wont "upset" any one
cheers!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well just ignore it!. They will come around!. Or explain, at great length why you want to do it!.

My boyfriend hates me being vegan and wants me to go back to being a vegetarian!.!. (he eats meat)!. It stinks b/c I really want my kids to be vegan but I know he will never allow it!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

when my 8 year-old decide to become a vegetarian, I was worried (not upset) because she's not a big vegetable eater and I was worried about what she would eat!. She does eat a salad every day, so I don't worry anymore Www@FoodAQ@Com

They are probably worried about your health and worried how it effects the way they eat!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because it threatens them in some way, or it makes them feel that you are changing, which a lot of times humans just fear!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

As someone who has been vegetarian for over 11 years now, there are a lot of reasons why people express upset when others become vegetarian!. In general, it boils down to fear!. Usually, they are misinformed!.!.!. everyone seems to know someone that said they were a vegetarian, possibly went about it without complete preparation, and then at the first sign of illness, vegetarianism was blamed!. There are things like - most women of child-bearing age suffer from iron deficiency at one point or another, whether or not they are meat-eaters, but when a vegetarian is iron deficient it is assumed that they need to eat more meat!.

It also seems to call into question their long-standing beliefs, even if that's completely not your intention!. I have spoken to many people over the years that tried to be vegetarians for one reason or another, often as children, who were discouraged from doing so by family members, and the arguments they put forth are the same ones that were used against them!.!.!. like they are trying to process it and decide what they do and do not believe!.

I could continue but really I think what it comes down to is that you need to ask them what they are upset about so that you can specifically research what you need to in order to reassure them!. There are many valid reasons for becoming a vegetarian and making healthy dietary decisions is definitely one of them! Vegetarians have a lower likelihood of developing such diseases as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, etc!., while accruing few risks of deficiencies!.
