Question: My friend calls herself a vegetarian, but she isn't!?
She eats jello, chicken, and fish and always refers to herself as a vegetarian!.!. It bothers me because she's just a "vegetarian" because she thinks it's cool!. Her, another friend of mine, and I went out to sushi awhile ago and she ordered california rolls like usual, and my friend goes "I thought you were a vegetarian!?" And she goes "yeah, I am!." And my friend told her that eating crab means you're not a vegetarian, and she got upset!. Does it bother anyone else when people say they're a vegetarian, yet they still eat fish or chicken!? Should I just let this go on, or should I point out again that she isn't a vegetarian at all!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think that as a vegetarian yourself, you would be within your rights to mention your concerns to her as she is not only deluding herself, but also unwittingly spreading misinformation about what it means to be a vegetarian, which may be insulting or offensive to those who have chosen that way as a lifestyle!. However, I think that since she is perfectly within her rights to make choices about what she eats, you should not make it too much of an issue: perhaps mention it once and then let it go!. She simply cannot honestly label herself a vegetarian if she eats flesh (which includes chicken, fish and shellfish) or animal by-products (meaning products derived from animals, like lard or 'carcass fat', gelatine, rennet - an enzyme taken from the stomach of a newly-killed calf and used to make cheese)!.

Perhaps she is trying to find a label for herself, and has seen vegetarianism as something she would like to be seen to 'be a part of'!. However, just using the label is not enough!. Ridiculous as it may seem, it does seem to be important to a lot of people to be able to define themselves by what they eat, hence the prevalence of diet-related social labels!. For example, a 'pescatarian' is someone who adheres to a vegetarian diet, but eats fish and shellfish!. A 'pollotarian' is someone who eats a mainly vegetarian diet, excludes fish and shellfish, but does eat chicken (one wonders why this particular combination!.!.!. possibly for social, nutritional or cultural reasons)!. Your friend seems to be best described as a 'flexitarian' - a term coined to describe someone who eats a mainly vegetarian diet, but eats some meat (for example, chicken) and fish!. Some vegetarians may well be upset by halfway terms like 'red-meat vegetarian' and 'semi-vegetarian' as vegetarianism is a life-choice based usually on strongly-held ethical beliefs, to which there is not really a halfway house!. Your friend seems to be a little misguided!. You should perhaps be as kind and nonjudgemental as you can if you choose to take it up with her!. Some vegetarians choose to eat fish and jello, but the strictly stay away from beef, turkey, chicken, etc!.!.!.they are still considered vegetarians!.

Those who choose to eat nothing with meat or animal products are called vegans!.

The ultimate wrath of chuck norris be upon her! To be honest people like this get what they deserve when they meet with a hard core vegan/veggie, if she introduces herself to one of them and then somehow lets slip she also eats meat they will probably eat her! let her go on deluding herself because her ultimate down fall will be all the sweeter and i know it sounds cruel but i get a lot of stick from people who regularly point out things like "you're eating sweets you're not a veggie anymore" to which i reply these are vegetarian sweets dumb ***!. It does kinda bother me because it gives people the wrong message about vegetarians!. People like that make us seem like hypocrites when we really don't eat any meats what so ever!. Chicken, Fish and Jello are not vegetarian!.
If an animal had to be killed for it then its not vegetarian!.
So no Jello is NOT vegetarian!.

If i were you i would tell her to stfu and get over herself and if she wanted to call herself a vegetarian to actually BE a vegetarian!.

you can:IGNORE IT,let it go on and have your "friend continue to annoy you by mocking the vegetarian ways or you can STOP IT, and tell your friend that your not a vegetarian and just live up to that if you were my real friend you wouldn't get mad at me for telling you that your just not a vegetarian!.

the jello is okay, many vegetarians eat it!.
the fish is arguable,, quite a few vegetarians eat it because they say its "different" (how!? im not sure!.!.)
but chicken!? nuh-uh,, vegetarians dont eat chicken!.

just for the record;; there's a difference between being a vegetarian and a picky eater! any person who doesnt eat meat because they dont like the taste and go around saying theyre a vegetarian annoys me to my very core!. just throwing that out there!.

You might want to just make a joke of it!. Ask her what a chicken tree looks like, whether crabs start out green and then turn red when they're ripe for harvest, etc!.

There is a certain extent as to what foods you prefer to eat as a vegetarian!. Some people eat seafood, like crab meat in california rolls, so that is questionable, however if she calls herself a vegetarian and eats the obvious ( Chicken ) then point out that she needs to get her morals straight!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

In a restaurant here, it labels which foods are vegetarian- lables all the fish foods and sea foods as vegetarian!.!.it is VERY annoying!.

Some raw foodists eat soaked and sprouted grains and beans, and some eat raw dairy and eggs!.
