Vegans/Vegetarians who choose diet for 'humane' reasons?!

Question: Vegans/Vegetarians who choose diet for 'humane' reasons!?
I, as an outsider, divide the vegan/vegetarian community into two distinct halves!. Those who eat mostly-exclusively plants for health reasons only, and those who eat mostly-exclusively plants to spare animals from being killed!.

This question is aimed ONLY at those who eat plants because they don't like the idea of animals being killed to provide food!.

When you consider that for the average non vegetarian, 1 animal dies for the production of 500lbs of protien in the form of beef or pork, and that 500,000 animals (mostly insects) die for the production of 500 lbs of plant based protien (soybeans = soy = tofu, or any others)

Does it disturb you that your plant based diet kills more animals by a HUGE margin vs meat eating diet, or don't you really mind because not all animals are really equal, and insects don't count (because they are small!? because they are gross!? because they are funny looking and not cute!?)

NOTE this is not a question for those who are avoiding meat for health reasons!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Ask them them about honey too and why eating is wrong but eating fruits is right!. Up to 80% of commercial fruit farms in the US lease or rent honeybee hives to pollinate their crops!. These are the same hives used for the production of honey!. Basically, the same bees are exploited and killed (during transport and handling) during the production of honey and fruits!. But one product is "wrong" while the other one is "right"!.

As to your original question, the argument can easily be made that since meat animals are generally herbivores!. animals are killed both for food and the harvesting of the animal feed!. What I question however, is the fantastic claim of some vegetarians and vegans that their diet is "cruelty free"!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Seems like a case of having to vote for the lesser of two evils!. Either kill 500,000 animals for vegetables, or kill 500,000 animals plus however many animals from which you consume meat annually!.

Everything on this planet has an essence to it, even if you just want to call it an electromagnetic field!. Consuming anything causes that essence to be snubbed out, so the most you can do is respect it and eat your fill!. Just accepting all the sh*t pumped into animals and the inhumane treatment probably doesn't count!.

You might have a point if it wasn't a fact that the meat animals eat more of the plants than the humans do!.

"When you consider that for the average non vegetarian, 1 animal dies for the production of 500lbs of protien in the form of beef or pork, and that 500,000 animals (mostly insects) die for the production of 500 lbs of plant based protien (soybeans = soy = tofu, or any others)"----please present a link to verify your figures!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Neither!. You're forgetting that each year one who eats meat is responsible for 100 farmed animals' deaths PLUS the billions of insects that had to die to feed those 100 animals!. I'd rather be responsible for the deaths of 500,000 insects killed by accident than the hundreds of farmed animals plus the BILLIONS of insects killed for my tastebuds!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Chilled is right!. The insects got to live and die freely, the meat industry IS torturing animals, and the only reason they do it is because we eat them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have a secret for you!.

Don't tell anyone else!!

Livestock eat plants!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Do not eat animals, you can be healthy without eating them, you just need to know the right foods to eat, KFC suppliers cram birds into huge waste-filled factories, breed and drug them to grow so large that they can’t even walk, and often break their wings and legs!. At slaughter, the birds’ throats are slit and they are dropped into tanks of scalding-hot water—often while they are still conscious!. And many other chicken suppliers do the same thing and other animals such as pigs and cows are treated WORSE than this!. Who knows, maybe when you die you will be resurrected into one of these miserable chickens because you ate them!.also, imagine how many animals you would consume in a year, maybe 200 (chickens, cows, pigs)multiply that by your whole life span!. So you think that thousands of animals should die after having horrible lives just for you to live your life when you don't need to eat animals at all!. Good Luck, please respond to this by emailing me or commenting back!. thank you and good luckWww@FoodAQ@Com

Animals wouldn't be killed and tortured if people didn't feel the need to eat them!. The issue here is exploitation and depriving animals of their Natural habitat and ability to behave as if they would in the wild!. Animals aren't meant to be stuffed in cages or over crowded barns, lots, or moving trucks!.

Yes, there would be fewer cows/chickens/pigs etc!. if people weren't involved, but is that a bad thing!? I have no problem with animals growing old and dying of natural causes (predators, old age), because that is the way it is supposed to be!.

I don't want to eat food that has been processed, pumped full of unnatural steroids and hormones and mericlessly killed!. Yes, insects die during harvest, Organically grown produce that uses no harsh chemicals that harm the environment is going to kill some insects too!. But, that is a part of life!. Animals die!. But it doesn't mean that we have the right to pollute and destroy life because "they die anyways!."

The vast majority of America's farmland grows non-consumable/unnatural food for both humans and animals!. Certain types of corn have been genetically engineered to make cows grow fast and fat for slaughter!. Cows should not eat this type of corn, it is not their natural diet and is not healthy for them!.

I also believe that the slaughter industry is harmful to the human population and the earth!. If I can do my part to limit the amount of chemical waste, environmental damage and suffering of animals and people, then at least I am doing something constructive for the earth!.

I can't comment on the statistics that you've provided because I don't know they're source or how valid they are!. What I do know is this: according to a recent report by Compassion in World Framing, "crops that could be used to feed the hungry are instead being used to fatten animals raised for food!." It takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce just 1 pound of edible animal flesh!.

I don't view insects as being less valuable based on how gross, small, or ugly they are!.!.!. I base my hierarchy of importance on the ability to think, feel, and process pain!. Mammals and birds are vertebrates, with highly sensitive nervous systems!.!.!. they have pain receptors (nociceptors) can intensely feel pain, and are intelligent enough to process the sensations!. Therefore, they exhibit other traits that would not be seen in insects, like going insane (from captivity and suffering)!. Insects and other arthropods don't have any nociceptors!.!.!. They can feel sensations, but pain is not one of them!.

I am vegan, and I have chosen this life because I don't believe in the animal industries!. I think society's treatment of animals reflects our values as a whole, and the disgusting and inhumane nature of factory farming doesn't reflect well on our collective moral standards!. I choose not to contribute to this decline in humane standards, to the best of my ability!. I am also unapologetic about not viewing insects as being as important as animals!. If we are going to use that logic, why stop at insects, anyway!? I may as well just end my life now, because my existence causes deaths of even smaller organisms!.!.!. every time I wash my hands or brush my teeth I kill bacteria! Seriously, people can nitpick all they want, but it is really pointless!.

I don't want to be confrontational, but I would also like to say this: I have never been offensive or obtrusive in others' lives, and I don't understand why people are so eager to try and paint vegans and vegetarians as hypocrites and idiots!. We are making a difference, no matter how big or small!.!.!. at least we are *subtracting* support from the industries that make animals' lives hell on earth!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would very much like to see your source for this, it doesn't seem very likely (in my opinion), and if you don't back it up with any sources, I find it hard to believe!.

But to answer your question: I do not beat myself up every time I accidentally kill a bug, because I can't help it!. It is a simple fact that people need vegetables etc, so when (and I'm just assuming that the reason why so many insects are killed is that they are in the way of the harvesting machines) a harvesting machine comes along and kills insects, this is (albeit on a much larger scale) similar!. It is not really avoidable!. This is the main difference with meat: this IS avoidable, and unnecessary!. We don't need to kill them, yet we do!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

!.!.!.the point you are missing is that there is a deliberate act of killing to eat meat!. While farmers do not tip-toe around the fields in Ballerina shoes ( I have 186 acres and my wellies are quite wide, as are the tyres on my tractors ) we do not purposefully set out to take a life!.

Oh, I also drive a car which i am sure kills animals, i even ran over a rabbit once!.!.!.!.!.but!.!.!.!.i didn't cage it up for the preceeding 4 months of its life like meat eaters do to much livestock!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I've just rescued an earthworm that was freezing to death and have him safely in a pot with some tasty coffee grounds!. Now is that act going to impact the lower food chain in some way so that a couple of beetles will die because the worm didn't!?

Another question I have is for people like us who mostly raise our own food, organically!. You'll have to demonstrate to us how it is that our little farming endeavors costs the lives of so many animals!. We don't use leather gloves or boots, use manure from live steers, but not blood or bone meal!. Any insects we get on our plants, we shoo off without using a poison that would kill them!. So where are the hordes of victims of our farming!?

I think you just like trying to yank our chains because you know, deep down, you couldn't do what we do!. You're just not tough enough to be a vegetarian!. But keep working at it!. Keep trying to understand and exchange information!. It's the only way we'll all learn to stop sniping at each other!.

Www@FoodAQ@Com

excellent question, i never really even thought of that, but it makes sense!. It's not like the farmer goes out and picks each little pea pod one at a time!.

But to answer your question, they will argue that you are lying or something, and say how you are a horrible person for eating meat, blah blah blah, the usual crap!. But the truth of the matter is that they do care for the cute animals more than the insects, snakes, spiders, and lizards!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
