Vegans/vegetarians avoiding meat for dietary reasons?!

Question: Vegans/vegetarians avoiding meat for dietary reasons!?
Many people choose the vegan/vegetarian path for dietary reasons!. Many people believe we eat too much meat, especially too much red meat!. Some people choose to eat fish, but not red meat, others draw the line at eggs but no fish, etc!. And of course, still others turn to totally plant based protien sources like soy, peanuts, nuts, etc!.

Where do insects fall as a protien source!. Now, eating insects isn't very common in western culture, but look at the Australian Aboriginees, they incorporate gubs as a big source of protein!. Many non-western people eat locusts and grasshoppers!. Locuts and Grasshoppers fried in oil and heavily spiced (and then sometimes dipped in honey) was part of the tradtional southwestern US diet until about 100 years ago!.

We've all seen the chimps putting stalks of grass in the terminte mound to pull out some juicey termintes!.

What would the vegan/vegetarian position be on getting at least some of your dietary protein from 'fishing' for termites!? or eating other insects!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
pound for pound insects contain around 5 times as much protein as red meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I cannot speak for all vegans, but I can speak for myself!.

I would not eat insects!. I don't eat anything that was once living and breathing!. They have as much right to be alive as I do and I don't see the benefit of terminating that life in order for me to eat - especially when I have a lot of plant options to choose from!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think we'd have to come up with a word like entomo-vegetarian, meaning one who excludes all animal products except insects!. The insects of the world outweigh humans!. I don't think it would be a fair fight!. I don't think most vegans would consider insects vegan, but some do consider their products okay-- like honey!.

Insects are animals and vegetarians don't eat dead animals!. You can conjure up whatever scenario you want to, the fact remains they don't eat dead animals and they don't need to either!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

insects are animals and very important to world ecology!.
without bees and other pollinating insects there would be no other food!.
So the answer to eating them is noWww@FoodAQ@Com

We can get protein from so many plant sources that there is no need to resort to eating bugs!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

People who are vegetarian do not eat animals!. This is how I learned the word, and this is the definition for it, as far as I know!.

This is not anything against people who want to eat healthier, but against people who eat animals, and still consider themselves vegetarian!.

The healthiest way to live, as far as I know, is being a "pescetarian", meaning that the only animals one eats are fish (lots of very healthy fats)!. Insects, or so I hear, are quite healthy, too, so when one is trying to eat as healthy as one possibly can, including insects is a sensible option!.

As long as you justify it like this, then there is no problem!. But people who follow this diet can not call themselves vegetarian!. That is not vegetarian propaganda, it is just the definition of a word!. Definitions of words are not negotiable!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, vegetarian is a rather loose term, most dictionaries now even include people who eat fish and/or chicken as vegetarian!. So i guess it would depend on what kind of vegetarian you asked!. Most of them would probably say no though!.

Now, vegan that's a different story, the term vegan is so strict to begin with their really isn't any room to wonder!. If they won't eat honey made from bee's i doubt they will eat insects!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
