Is being a vegan actually healthier?!

Question: Is being a vegan actually healthier!?
(i'm just asking, not passing judgement, so no one get angry)

my friend just became vegan and she tells me that our bodies were not meant to eat meat and that being vegan is the healthiest choice!. but the thing is, when we went to lunch, she ordered a salad without everything (including dressing) and just sat there with a bowl of leaves!. then she at like three bites and was done!. i don't understand how that is healthy!? she doesn't ever eat anything!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
No!.!.!.There are many factors other than food intake that determine overall "health" (i!.e!. physical exercise)!. A purely vegan lifestyle is (contrary to other opinions on this board) not necessarily unhealthy either!. There are plenty of whole foods that contain 99% of all essential vitamins, minerals, amino acid chains, and proteins necessary for a healthy body!. However, it does require an extensive understanding of nutrition and a persistent consumption of a wide variety of whole foods!. If this is the lifestyle she wants to live, a consultation with a nutritional therapist might be a good idea!.
A bowl of lettuce is basically cellulose and water, which has very little nutritive value!. It sounds like your friend is enamored by a lifestyle that she will either learn more about and adapt to, or simply grow out of!. Although, if she is a very stubborn person and doesn't listen to reason or science you might want to have an eating disorder intervention with her sooner rather than later!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Not really!. Because you won't eat meat if you were vegetarian, then you could develop the following below:

anemia (iron is used to carry oxygen in blood) -from red meat!.
zinc deficiency (used in biochemical reactions and helps the immune system function) -red meat, poultry, oysters
lack of protein (used for growth of everything)- meat
lack of B vitamins (helps function nervous system, aid in red blood cell production, and help build tissue)-meat,poultry,fish,eggs,nuts
lack of E vitamins (an antioxidant)-take a guess, MEAT!

also your friend is a blowhard (no offense)!. If you are christian then you might recognize this:
001:030 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air,
and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there
is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was
so!.

If you are atheist then the ancient humans (yes, all of them), lived off of RAW MEAT! So they were adapted to eating it!.

I don't want to sound accusing, but your friend really doesn't kow what she is talking about!.

I think it's more a question of what she eats any other time!. It's probably a case of her just having the salad, when you had lunch with her, because that's all the vegan-friendly food that was available on that restaurant's menu!. (I don't know if you have noticed, but a lot of eateries don't have much in the way of vegan/vegetarian foods on their menus!.) She might very well be eating sumptuous meals at home and just playing it extremely safe when eating out!. Best to find out what she normally eats, before 'passing judgment' that all she eats is salad greens and nothing else!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think being vegetarian is more healthy than vegan!. There are important nutrients in eggs and dairy products!. also soy products are bad (except for miso, natto, and tempeh or fermented soy product)!. Tell her not to drink too much soy milk (and read a book called The Whole Soy Story)!. Milk is not very good, either, because it is pasturized and all good bacteria died in the process!. Skimmed milk is even worse!. Cheese made of raw, organic milk is good!.

I think not eating too much can be a good thing, but she still need the nutrients!. Is she on a diet!? If she is, she should cut down on carbohydrates (and continue eating fatty food), because carbohydrate makes people crave for more carbohydrates: grains, bread, flour, rice, etc!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No diet is automatically healthy and all well balanced diets, meat or not meat included, can be healthy!.

Though it seems your friend is making a big mistake by not eating a good lunch, you cannot really judge on the basis of one meal or over a few days, Maybe she just wasn't hungry at the time!. Or since she is new at it, she is still working things out!. Give it some time!. It's good that you seemed concerned about your friend's health but give her some space!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Either a vegetarian/vegan diet or diet that contains meat can be unhealthy if done wrong, and healthy if done right!. If all she's eating is lettuce, she's not eating healthy!. If you're concerned for her, maybe tell her booklets like this are available online http://www!.veganoutreach!.org/guide/gce!.p!.!.!. and she may want to be smart about nutrition by looking into what she needs for her body-- not just eating salad!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

well it seems like she has an eating disorder and is simply saying she's a vegan as an excuse for not eating a lot of things!. but also, in general being a vegan is less healthy because, as protein is harder to get, you end up eating too many carbs and too much fat if you aren't careful!. your friend is right though that eating vegetables and not over eating meat is generally very healthy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No one really knows if it is healthier or not!. What I think is yes because veggies and fruits give protein also!. They have a high amount of fiber also!. But some people say meat tastes good!. I think veggies can taste good also if you cook them well!. I hope this helped!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

there is a variety one can be vegan and that is definitly not one of them!.!.!.!. thats just plane unhealthy!.!.!.!.!. she should do some research in incorporating actual food full of nutrients!.!. salads if they are pale greens are jsut full of water!.!.!.!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

no!!! you wont get your meat or iron you need!. just stay
on a healthy diet!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think once u make up ur mind even air should be edible enough !.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
