Serious question for Vegans?!
As I understand it, vegans believe that using any part of an animal is ethically wrong!. I'm not going to judge, I'm simply trying to wrap my brain around this basic concept!.
Since virtually everything you come in contact with in the modern world either contains animal parts, or contributes to the destruction of their habitats in the creation process, at what point do you draw the line and say "Okay, I can live with this!."!? For instance:
-Construction glue used to build your home contains animal parts!. Gotta have a place to live though, right!?
-Animal habitats were destroyed in order to convert land into usable farmland so you could eat only vegetables and have veg-based products!. Gotta eat though, right!?
-Oil, used to make gasoline, is an animal by-product!. Gotta get to work though, right!?
-Animal products are used in the production of film!. When you watch a movie at the theater, you are watching it on dead animal parts!. Gotta be entertained though, right!?
So, at what point do you decide your convictions aren't worth as much to you as the basic needs and conveniences of modern life!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
I draw the line at direct contact with animal and animal products!.
Even if I eat vegetables and wheat I KNOW that insects died in the processing of them, I just accept that!.
I accept that my partner bought leather lounges and leather car seats before I knew him, I accept that!.
I accept almost all of it, I won't use direct things such as animal meats or products, but cross contamination and unavoidable things I do accept!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegans do their best!. A true vegan consumes or wears no animal products (leather, fur, etc)!. There is a huge housing revolution going on right now - while it's not vegan specific, it involves a greater awareness of using recycled materials, natural sunlight, reduction of energy consumption via clever design - there's some amazing stuff out there!. There's a lot of modern conveniences that can very easily be avoided - some can't!. Most vegans in modern society try their best via diet and clothing and environmental awareness !.!.!.!. that's got to be a better approach than just saying "what the point"!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
At least with such a well written question you avoided getting the "OMG is this true!?" teeny bopper answers
All I can add is that vegans or veganism as I understand them/it is to avoid or minimize human exploitation of animals!. Accidentally stepping on an ant may be unavoidable but killing a cow for food is!.
also you have to differentiate between those who follow the vegan diet (as one poster mentioned, for athletic perfomance etc) and those who follow the vegan lifestyle!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

You just do what you can reasonably do in your own life!. Watch what your clothes and food are made out of, watch who tests on animals and who doesnt!. Its reducing animal suffering, not saving the world!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
seriously, vegans do their absolute best to avoid animal suffering!.
it is totally un- avoidable,
unless you live in a cave!.
duh!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegans do everything they can within reason!.!. What do you do!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
vegetarians and vegans just do their best to save animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
more rainforest is distroyed due to need for land to put the meat cows in!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
That's not very fair to vegans considering they do everything within humanely possible to live a more compassionate lifestyle!. It's not there fault that so many things in life are made by animals!. I'm sure they don't feel good about it!. I'm pretty sure most of them are aware that they will have to put it with some things!. Just because it's hypocritical, you expect them to just give up what basically gives their life meaning because they know it means that animals suffer because of that too!?
It's just like a meat eater saying that they love animals!. Well, if you loved them so much, you wouldn't be at fault for their pain and suffering!. also, if you weren't here to judge, you did a pretty bad job at doing so!. I'm a vegetarian and still know that I am not being fully vegetarian as I wear shoes that are made from leather and drive a car and live in a house!. Do you think we are stupid and are going to starve ourselves to make you seem like you are in the right!? Get real!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

as ive experienced it, vegans just live to varying levels of hypocrisy!. unless you're the hippie living in a shelter made of fallen branches picking berries up that have fallen on the ground to eat and moving from place to place so as not to permanently hurt the environment, you're not a true 'vegan' by definition!. the vegans i know (although i have met some that do live like the above) will mostly try to avoid/switch products that contain animal by-products unless its absolutely necessary for them to use it!.
i guess becoming vegan is trying to have as little impact as personally possible on animals!.!. every little product they don't use is one more thing they do that most of society wont!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You seem to be confused regarding the meaning of veganism!. Veganism is seeking to avoid the exploitation of animals!. In today's world, especially in "advanced" societies like the U!.S!., it's virtually impossible to completely avoid animal exploitation!.
I'm not a veger but allow me to tackle these "gimmes":
"-Construction glue used to build your home contains animal parts!. Gotta have a place to live though, right!? "---If there isn't a vegan choice practically available, it isn't a vegan issue!.
"-Animal habitats were destroyed in order to convert land into usable farmland so you could eat only vegetables and have veg-based products!. Gotta eat though, right!?"---time to get with it!. More crops go to feed meat animals than to feed humans directly!.
"-Oil, used to make gasoline, is an animal by-product!. Gotta get to work though, right!?"---Fossil fuels are partly products of animals living a LONG time ago!. Those animals weren't exploited!.
"-Animal products are used in the production of film!. When you watch a movie at the theater, you are watching it on dead animal parts!. Gotta be entertained though, right!?"---same as the construction glue answer!.
"So, at what point do you decide your convictions aren't worth as much to you as the basic needs and conveniences of modern life!?"---when there is a vegan choice, that's where they go!. If not, you gotta live your life too!. Not a single vegan will proclaim complete success in avoiding products that are a result of animal exploitation!. But that's not the goal or the definition!. That would be avoiding animal exploitation where it's practical and possible!.
I hope that gives you a better understanding!.

wow that was actually pretty good! I am vegan and while I love animals and hate anything that would cause them harm just so I could have something I do it mostly just for health reasons I just think animal protein is bad for you there for i try my best not to eat it!. other things of course I would never buy a leather purse or shoes or anything but don't really think to much about anything else!.
if i happen to notice that an animal was harmed in the making of something if i can avoid I do, if i can't like like say there might be one face product that works best for me over everything else and at least I have tried my best to find an alternative but just can't then u gotta use what works right so i'll use it but at least i know i tried!.
but all good points u made and i don't think any of us would have ever thought about all that!.

>As I understand it, vegans believe that
> using any part of an animal is ethically wrong!.
Your understanding is wrong!. Only 'some' people think this way!.
I, for instance, became vegan purely for enhanced athletic performance!.
I can go longer, faster, further, recovery is quicker, vastly improved stamina, etc!. etc!.
I simply did research on the human body in relation to what food is the best for athletic performance!. I started eliminating the obvious things that hindered performance!.!.!. meat, dairy, preservatives, processed foods, and etc!. It was never my goal to become vegetarian or vegan, but I simply changed my diet with the goal of becoming the most 'natural' human possible (that is, eating foods that the human body was 'best' designed to utilize) in my personal living circumstances etc!. My performance went way up!.
As it turns out, enhancing my athletic performance also improved my overall health, got rid of my acne, and many other positive things lead to me continuing my investigation into the food I eat, the shampoo I use, and anything that comes into contact with me which I can myself control easily enough with my personal choices!.
Further down the road I learnt more about the politics of food, how it's grown and distributed, hidden ingredients, and on and on!. People call me vegan, and I let them, because trying to explain that I'm just trying to be a natural human would just take too long!. I think humans are best suited to eating fruits!. Secondarily, green leafy vegetation, and on down the list!. Meat is so far down the list that I really don't need it at all because we are just not meant to eat it!. Sure, we can get by with some small amounts in our diet, but that doesn't mean it's any good for us!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
