First off, congrats for putting vegetarianism under consideration!. You will feel healthier and better with yourself now that you're not eating meat!. : )

Here's some health tips:

--> Make sure you get lots of protein!. Eggs, fortified soy milks, protein shakes, nuts (almonds, peanuts, etc!.), beans & lentils, and seeds are the best sources!. Enjoy tofu and other mock meats in moderation!. For more info, check here: http://www!.vrg!.org/nutrition/protein!.htm

--> Zinc and Iron can be obtained from other sources, like the ones listed above, beans, whole breads, fortified cereals, fruits, and vitamin supplements!. For more info, check out these pyramids and charts: http://www!.vegsource!.com/nutrition/pyram!.!.!. (vegetarian)

--> Here are some nice nutritious meal plans: http://www!.veggiemealplans!.com/

--> Being sedentary could also cause problems, vegetarian or not!. Whenever possible, try to be active and not to couch slouch whenever possible, or find a leisure exercise you really enjoy!.

Talk to your doctor about your dietary choices, he will give you better health tips than anyone ever could!.

Secondly, there are two ways in which you can make the jump into vegetarianism:

1!. Just flat out stop eating meat abruptly!. This is more challenging if you're a lot of a meat lover, so maybe it's not recommendable for your case!.

2!. Slowly make the transition!. Go without any red meats (cow, pork, lamb, etc!.) for a week or two, or more if you want!. Then get rid of the white meats (chicken, seafood, etc!.)!. In these first few weeks, try to avoid dead animals when possible and don't be tempted by the smell, which is the biggest catching weakness!.

This second one gives your body time to adapt!. After about a month of cutting out all meats, you should be getting experienced!. After you get the hang of it, you decide if you want to take the next step to veganism, which will take some further work and planning!.

If you don't, work on avoiding the meat!. As I've said before, it all comes down to willpower!. Whenever you're tempted, remind yourself why you're being a vegetarian or think of whatever got you interested into the diet!. Mock meats are always great transition foods, along with tofu and tempeh!.

Other pointers:
-->when you're starting, take one meal a week in which you normally eat meat and substitute by a vegetarian meal!. Then gradually increase your number of vegetarian meals a week!. Try something different each week for variety and to build up a repertoire of veggie meals!.
-->It is VERY important that you eat foods gih in proteins, since sometimes the lasting cravings are a signal that you are missing something, which in this case would be protein; therefore, you begin craving meat!. keep you protein levels up to avoid unnecessary physiological cravings!.

After a while, the meat will stop appearing pleasing and you will be disgusted by the time you decide to cave and try it and trust me, you won't bear it!. That makes it a whole lot easier, because liking meat is a force of habit, not an instinct!. Once you break the meat-eating habit, you will feel free!.

Good luck with everything! :DWww@FoodAQ@Com

Personally, I tried to take it slow, but that didn't work!.
finally I just stopped eating meat all at once!. at first its hard, but just tell yourself that your helping animals, the environment, and your health!. eventually the cravings go away (for me it was after about a month) and now I don't even have to think about not eating meat!. its been 6 months and its a natural part of my life now, like I've been doing it all my life!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hooray for you! I've been a vegetarian for 17 years! Although, not an especially strict one the entire time!. For a while I went back to eating just fish and poultry, that's called a semi-vegetarian!. Now I eat eggs and dairy, so I am what's called a ovo-lacto-vegetarian!. If you eat no animal products whatsoever you are a vegan!. I advise working your way up to that!. When you are first starting out-just keep in mind that you can eat lots of great dishes with out meat! There are endless possibilities! Pastas, salads, soups, Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian foods and now there are many good meat substitutes for things you may miss!. Boca and Gardenburger make faux chicken nuggets, breakfast sausage, and even corn dogs! I really like to get hummus for dipping crackers and veggies!. I also like to marinate and bake tofu for a yummy snack! Check your local health food store for endless options and look online for great recipes and tips! Best of luck and good choice!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm a picky vegetarian!. I dislike a lot of the "weird" foods people eat (like veggie burgers, tofu, etc!.)!. I've always been a picky eater, though!.
I find it easy to be a vegetarian, though, and I LOVE food even more now! I make fajitas, quesadillas, stir fry, broccoli & cheese stuffed shells, broccoli alfredo, broccoli lasagna (I love broccoli, if you couldn't tell!), fruit smoothies with yogurt and soy milk and a scoop of protein powder, yogurt with granola and fresh fruit!.!.!. I also try to buy organic food when possible, but sometimes it's just too expensive (like organic animal crackers - not dishing out $5 when I can get them at the dollar store!)!. It's not as difficult as it seems!. You have to really love cooking, though :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

In the scientific literature, there are surprisingly few studies done on vegetarian longevity!. Russell Smith, PhD, in his massive review study on heart disease, showed that as animal product consumption increased among some study groups, death rates actually decreased! Such results were not obtained among vegetarian subjects!. For example, in a study published by Burr and Sweetnam in 1982, analysis of mortality data revealed that, although vegetarians had a slightly (!.11%) lower rate of heart disease than non-vegetarians, the all-cause death rate was much higher for vegetarians!.

The belief that animal protein contributes to heart disease is a popular one that has no foundation in nutritional science!. Outside of questionable studies, there is little data to support the idea that meat-eating leads to heart disease!. For example, the French have one of the highest per capita consumption of meat, yet have low rates of heart disease!. In Greece, meat consumption is higher than average but rates of heart disease are low there as well!.

The annual all-cause death rate of vegetarian men is slightly more than that of non-vegetarian men (!.93% vs !.89%); the annual death rate of vegetarian women is significantly more than that of non-vegetarian women (!.86% vs !.54%) (Am J Clin Nutr 1982 36:873)

While two US studies have implicated meat consumption as a cause of colon cancer, there are several that contradict these findings!. In 1975, Rowland Philips compared Seventh-Day Adventists physicians, who do not eat meat, with non-Seventh Day Adventist physicians, and found that the vegetarian doctors had higher rates of gastrointestinal and colon-rectal cancer deaths!.

There are many societies where the populace consumes high levels of animal food and saturated fat but remains free of heart disease!. Dr!. george Mann, who studied the Masai cattle herding peoples in Africa, found no heart disease, even though their diet consisted of meat, blood and rich milk!. 4 Butterfat consumption among Masai warriors, who consider vegetable foods as fodder for cattle, can reach one and one half pounds per day!. Yet these people do not suffer from heart disease!.

Beef is an excellent source of minerals like magnesium and zinc—you need zinc for clear thinking and a healthy sex life!.
