Can someone explain to me about eggs?!

Question: Can someone explain to me about eggs!?
I'm sorry if this question sounds really dumb and ignorant, I am just curious!. I'm a vegetarian, but not a vegan and yes I do eat eggs!. Basically I want to know why vegans don't eat eggs!. Just like I know why I don't eat meat, what are the personal reasons behind it!? Secondly, what exactly are eggs anyways!!? and what do they have to do with the chickens diet!? Obviously some eggs have baby chicks in them and others are just yolk, so what is the difference between the two, how did they become that way!? thanks!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hi,

A vegan does not eat eggs because chickens are exploited, abused and killed in the process of producing them!. Aside from just not exploiting the bird for their eggs, birds may be the most abused land animals in modern farming!. They're treated like pieces in a machine, where their purpose is only to make money for the farmer!. All chickens who lay eggs are female-- the hens!. Have you ever wondered what happens before they ever get to the egg-laying facility!? Baby male chicks are culled and killed-- suffocated, gased, or ground up alive at the hatchery because they don't lay eggs!.

Birds have been selectively bred to produce more eggs and increase profits!. Many hens kept on factory farms are stuffed into battery cages where they spend their entire lives in an extremely cramped living space!. They have their beaks cut so they don't peck the other birds crammed into the cage with them to death!. Some hens may be starved in a process called "forced molting" to increase egg production!. Sometimes they add fish oil to the hens' feed to increase Omega 3 fats!. When they no longer produce enough eggs for Farmer Bob, in a fraction of the chicken's natural lifespan, they are killed!. Imagine what it must be like to be a chicken-- born into a factory machine, separated on the assembly line with thousands of other chicks- from the male chicks who are killed, shipped off to laying facilities, crammed into cages, never see the light of day, and then if you can't produce enough eggs, you're killed!.

What are eggs!? An egg is the reproductive body of a chicken!. The male has sperm, females have the egg!. Chicken eggs from hens in a laying facility are not around males, so the eggs are not fertilized with sperm, and have no baby chicks in them!.

If you must use eggs, please make sure you at least know exactly where they come from, and that at least the females are allowed some kind of decent conditions on smaller free range farms!. Free range isn't always the positive image you may have in your mind, and there is much to question beyond what you see only at the laying facility!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegans don't eat eggs because they feel it isn't their place to consume the products of another animal!. Eggs that are commercially sold are from hens that live in a cage so small that they cannot turn around in or otherwise move!. Since that's torture for them, vegans abstain!.

Like a woman getting her period, a chicken will regularly lay eggs, unlike a cow that has to be constantly impregnated to continue producing milk!. However, the difference between the "yolk-only" and "baby chick" eggs are that the yolk eggs are unfertilized!. These chickens are kept separate from roosters so that they can just keep producing yolk-only eggs instead of ones with baby chickens in it!. As you can see, this wouldn't happen in nature as chickens would interact with roosters and produce more chicks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It sounds like you were sleeping durring Health-PE, and Biology class!.

Eggs are 1/2 of the genetic material needed to produce life!. As long as the hen hasn't had sex her eggs are fine to eat, since they will never produce a baby chick!.

Vegans don't eat eggs, because they don't use any animal products including honey!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The sub-category of vegetarian I will cover, ovo-vegetarians, accept the normal consumption of eggs because they do not believe that doing so conflicts with an ethical vegetarian diet!. They do not see eggs as living things and subsequently do not make the connection between consuming eggs and causing animal suffering or death!.

In addition to this, many ovo-vegetarians see complete veganism as limiting their options unnecessarily, especially when eggs are an excellent source of complete protein and a viable nutritional alternative to meat!.

Many vegetarians who do consume eggs opt for "free range" eggs over normal--or "battery"--eggs!. This is usually out of ethical concern for the treatment of egg-laying hens!.

Vegans, by contrast, do not consume eggs normally and generally oppose the institution altogether!. They argue that purchasing "battery hen" eggs supports an institution that cages up to nine birds together, debeaks them, and forces them to continually lay eggs until they are calcium -depleted and on the verge of death--at which point, they are slaughtered!.

In addition, vegans also go further to disapprove of "free range" eggs, which do not require a hen to be caged!. They argue that most free range hens are actually packed into houses, where they have minimal access to the outside!.

They also note that even producing "free range" eggs requires having fertile eggs--half of which will hatch into male chicks, which will then be slaughtered after birth or fed to a certain weight only to be culled!.

In addition to these two positions, there are also vegetarians who don’t consume eggs for other reasons!. Some of these vegetarians don’t eat eggs because they are high in cholesterol; and others do not consume them because they believe that the animal farming institution contributes to environmental degradation!.

Take some time to determine where you stand--ethically and nutritionally--and then make your decision from there!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I raise free range chickens and sell the eggs!. We collect the eggs 3 times a day so they are fresh and clean!. Chickens are fed organic laying mash and are left to free range and eat what ever they want in the yard!. They are happy chickens that follow me around the yard and are like pets!. You can pick most of them up and pet them!. By collecting the eggs, cleaning with water, and getting them in the fridge right away we are preventing them from having the problem of maybe having a baby chick in them!. If they are left to the hens and are set on for a few days then you will run the risk of having a chick starting to form!. I don't know too much about being a Vegan but know quite a bit about being a chicken farmer!. I wouldn't eat a store bought egg!. Full of chemicals and cleaned with bleach!. The shell on an egg is porous and chemicals can permeate the shell!.So in essence if you eat and buy store bought eggs that are not "organic" you are consuming quite a bit of chemicals and are eating eggs from chickens that are not "happy" !. I suggest you look for a farmer to get your eggs from!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegans exclude themselves from any animal exploitation!.

laying hens are generally the worst treated of all farm animals, second only to broilers!.

layers are kept for about 12 months at which point their production slows and they are killed

All male chicks are killed as soon as they are sexed - a few days old with modern hybrids

Eating commercial eggs supports a barbaric industry!. Take a look in layers barns!. Take a look in cage barns - we have one near us that houses 1!.3 million hens, 4 to a cage 18 inches square, 8 cages tall, in 50 rows that are 18 inches apart, each row about 300metres long!. Its industry on a mammoth scale

If you are going to eat eggs, please consider buying them from a hobby farm or someone who keeps them as pets!.

You ask what eggs are!. they are regularly produced by hens, regardless of the presence of a cockerel!. If the cockerel has fertilised the hen, the eggs will have chicks in them, otherwise they are just waste incapable of ever becoming a life - hence why many veggies find eggs ok!.

Generally speaking, commercial hens do not have access to cockerels except for the odd mistake in sexing!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
